Message boards have been around FOREVER. This is not an accurate account of the internet. Even outside of forums, personal websites also had guestbooks where anyone could comment anything they wanted. You could widely interact with entire communities on Craigslist. You could create a profile on a dating site. You could post items for sale and their photos on eBay. The internet was not “read only.” This is such a ridiculous and simplistic view of the internet.
