It's not a bad question. Empiricism will get you by day to day, but it's inadequate for determining any kind of purpose.
I have an answer for what I think people should be doing, though I don't think it's objectively teleological in the Christian sense, but I'm not quite ready to sell it yet. When I do, it'll probably be based on incentive, not philosophy.
