This winter is so different so far than this time last year. Last January 9th, after some long thawing spells, the snow hardly covered the boulders on the trails at Franconia Ridge, so I had to use my microspikes instead of snowshoes (spikes were not so great in unconsolidated snow). In contrast, several weeks ago (mid December), the snow was deep from trailhead to summit and it was easy cruising by snowshoes.
