I think this is the natural consequence of networks that become so successful that they start defending their network lock in, rather than trying to appeal to new users.
They eventually see themselves as an authority. They feel they have to “control the network for the greater good,” and so out come the little tyrants in them with all of these great plans to “fix” all the bad people on their platform.
A competitor that tries to simply give the censored a voice will always be seen as an evil manipulator ruining their chance at utopia.
So no, I don’t think it’s paranoid. I think it’s naive to believe the incentives won’t push it this way. The ONLY thing that I believe prevents it, is competition from those open platforms that is strong enough that nobody gives a shit what their opinion is.
