The remarkable life of Monika Ertl met a tragic end when she was ambushed by the Bolivian secret service in 1973. Ertl had long been at the top of the “most wanted” lists of intelligence agencies worldwide, particularly the CIA.

Born to Nazi parents, Ertl defied her family’s views and dedicated herself entirely to the communist cause. After World War II, her family sought refuge in Bolivia, a country ruled by the right-wing and US-supported dictatorship of Hugo Banzer Suárez in the 1970s.

Ertl was deeply affected by the assassination of Che Guevara in 1967, prompting her to join the National Liberation Army of Bolivia (ELN), which Che had led before his death. Adopting the alias “Imilla,” she collaborated with Che’s former comrades to hunt down his killers.

In 1971, Ertl traveled to Hamburg, Germany, in search of Roberto Quintanilla Pereira, who worked at the Bolivian Consulate. Pereira was a particular target for the ELN due to his desecration of Che’s body after his death.

Monika gunned down Pereira with three shots to the chest. As she escaped, she left behind her purse, a wig, a revolver, and a piece of paper with the words “Victory or Death - ELN.”

Although she covered her tracks, the killing was soon linked to her, and the US-backed Bolivian dictatorship put a $20,000 bounty on her head. However, Monika successfully returned to Bolivia with more targets on her mind, including her family’s Nazi friends.

Her plan involved kidnapping Klaus Barbie, the former SS chief known as the “Butcher of Lyon,” and smuggling him to France to stand trial. Additionally, the kidnapping aimed to eliminate a dangerous advisor to Bolivia’s police force.

However, in 1973, CIA-trained special forces ambushed and killed Ertl in La Paz after several days of surveillance. Her body was photographed and buried at an undisclosed location.

Ertl’s fellow fighter Régis Debray alleged that Klaus Barbie orchestrated the deadly ambush. Barbie, who had also collaborated with the West German Federal Intelligence Service since 1966, had written reports on Monika Ertl.
