Yeah, some people don't want to read/hear the formal register sometimes -- it does indicate that I'm trying to be serious and thoughtful, and sometimes people don't particularly want to be! Which means they might ignore or block me or tell me off. Yup!
I've been mistaken for a man online several times (e.g. by people making the sexist assumption that everyone working on an open source project is a man) so I'm no stranger to that assumption.
