I would love that kind of feature too, but I don't expect to see it. I think the developers of Mastodon are going a different way as they've made an effort to deprioritize local feeds and they're working on the implementation of groups (not to be confused with lists). Groups would allow for discussions specific to a subject were anybody posting to a group would be shared with any other member of the group, regardless of instance or follow status. It could be good. I'm hoping it will be.
