It's fairly trivial to mirror your Mastodon activity to Twitter using services like IFTTT (free version), but that wouldn't reflect likes or replies back to Mastodon. It's pretty much a one way street. Of course, it could serve as an incentive to people who are following you to migrate to the Fediverse themselves. Personally, I'd see that as the best case scenario, but I can only speak for myself.

That sucks. We've been looking around ourselves to see if we can find a place with a little more space for our horde, but things are not great for buying a house around Phoenix right now. I think things are a little less crazy out west of town, but even there it's gotten pretty nuts. Fingers crossed you all find something that meets your needs without too much hassle.

Hmm, I just hope it's got it's own controls. I don't mind highlighting authors when a page is linked. I think that's a great idea actually. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable giving a blank check of approval to any random site to trend to get that function. And we put a ton of time and effort into hashtags too. If it takes that much investment, we're going to need to "hire" more people.

This sounds like a really cool new feature. From the looks of things, it'll be only for links to moderator-approved sites, but globally later on. Of course, this feature is part of 4.3, which hasn't been released yet. As soon as it's available we'll have it here on #Fosstodon. I'm not sure what making a site moderator-approved is going to look like, but assuming it's not some weird thing, you can just ask someone on our moderation team and they can hook you up.

LLMs have their use. Unfortunately many are trying to use them in ways they were never designed to work (like as a search engine), so quite often their results are absolute garbage. I can definitely sympathize about not wanting to deal with it, which is why I'd want any such feature to be opt-in.

I'm guessing I'm the minority here, but I don't really mind AI being included in a general sense. If Vivaldi added an option where you could opt-in to an integrated AI solution of your choosing, I'd be on board with that. Especially if options like locally run AI solutions like #ollama were possible. Even more possibilities if base prompt was configurable like in #fabric.

What's the oldest computer you have in ACTIVE use. It doesn't have to be every day, but not something that's sitting in a drawer you haven't turned on for a decade. Something you use. For me, it's a Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 1, which originally was released in 2012. I'm currently running #Zorin 16.1 :zorin: on it, and it's perfectly capable of most of my everyday tasks.

I can see where that could be a beneficial feature. Even if you don't want to leave who the post was by, just an indicator of some sort that there was something there that is now gone. The one that messes with me is when I'm looking at a post that's clearly a reply to something, and I can't see the original content either because it's been deleted or because I just don't have permission. Deleted just leaves the whole conversation in place, but weirdly orphaned at the start of the thread.

I remember unlocking my phone where my social app was the last thing I was looking at, and seeing something on my screen that was interesting, only to have it auto-refresh on me and never be able to find that post again. Hugely frustrating. I should be able to find it knowing who posted it and when. That shouldn't be hidden from me now that I've hypothetically seen it already.

One of the features I love about Mastodon that doesn't get much attention is one that is in your face every day, and that's the chronological stream. If I refresh my browser, I can still find the post I was looking at. It's not been moved off to some seemingly random place based on some unknown algorithm, assuming you can find it at all. It's such a simple thing, but it really makes my experience with Mastodon that much better.

Wanted to go for a quick walk today before it got too hot. I checked the thermometer and it was already 93F (34C), so I knew I had to be quick. I walked for about 45 minutes and covered about 2.5 miles (4km), but by the time I got back it was 104F (40C). I was pretty overheated even though I did have water the whole time. In general, not a smart move on my part.

Yea, I haven't seen her for a while. Sometimes I get warning when she leaves and sometimes not. When she pops back in she usually drops me a note to let me know she's back, but I haven't seen anything from her for a while.

They might like it less than you think. The presentation makes it all look glassy and smooth, but those images take time to generate, even on a full sized computer with a decent GPU. They show up instantly in the presentation, but they're going to take a while in real life. My guess it'll be an exercise in patience every time they want to use it. I don't know your wife and kids, but I know mine would get tired of the constant waiting pretty fast.

I don't disagree, but I think part of that is that they've diverged from Apple in how they manage their app/OS relationship, but they're still trying to emulate Apple's style of hype building. Apple's keynotes have moved from Jobs on a stage with a glorified PowerPoint behind him to Craig Federighi doing parkour through the building and highly choreographed video presentations. They all also seem to have the same handwaving coach. It's distracting from their actual announcements.

I think the problem with these Apple announcements (other than the constant handwaving and overuse of words like "magical" and "breathtaking") is that Apple has tried to make all of its apps part of its OS. Updates to Mail? Cool, but why is that part of the OS? Inversely, Google has made an effort to make virtually everything an app that's available from the store. Their apps get constant updates throughout the year. It's honestly one of the biggest distinctions between the two platforms.

Even with some hypothetical ultra-amazing AI chip, that's only going to be a distinction between on device and cloud based. Apple makes some amazing hardware, but they're not going to invent anything that fits in a phone that's going to compete with a datacenter. Keeping AI on device isn't leading the market, it's just putting the AI in a particular place.

OK, but does doing a good job equate to market leadership? I'd argue that it doesn't. Maybe I'm wrong there. Maybe as long as Apple can manage a mediocre product on a lot of devices that's borderline adequate people will consider that "leadership". Throw a little Apple branded spit and polish on it, and in five years people will be saying Apple invented AI.

That worked, and I'm really surprised Bloomberg has allowed a hole that big to stick around. Still, in reading that it's just a "They'll do this thing that OpenAI already does" or "They'll do this thing that Google already does" or "They'll do this thing on device instead of in the cloud". I don't see anything particularly innovative that would put Apple in a market leadership position other than pushing something derivative out to lots of devices. Is that what they're doing?

That's paywalled up to its eyeballs, so can't read it. How does better Siri and a version of CoPilot for xcode translate to it leading the market? Opt-in is great, but it doesn't put Apple in a leading position regarding AI. I've heard many different hypothesis for how Apple is going to lead this market, but none make sense to me. Their own LLM based on only public data? The other guys used public data plus more. Deep integration with ChatGPT? That's not Apple leading, that's OpenAI.

#WWDC starts in a little less than an hour. There are many that are expecting #Apple to come out strong with #AI products. Some have even stipulated that Apple will lead the market. My question is, what would that look like? Having a terrible AI on a lot of devices isn't really leading the market. Keeping AI on device is great for privacy reasons, but that AI is never going to compete functionally with the giant datacenter model. Only public sources is good, but everybody has that. Sooooo.... ?

I've been on Fosstodon for as long as there's been a Fosstodon, and personally I love the Local timeline. Still, sometimes I hit up the Explore for news and to see what's going on outside my personal bubble of information. How often do you use the Explore feature here on Mastodon?
