I don't know about Rugrats, but the creator of Ren and Stimpy (John Krickfalusi) and the creator of Invader Zim (Jhonen Vasquez) are both fairly twisted freaks.
My daughter was really into Vasquez' work. He did a comic called "Johnny The Homocidal Maniac" that I really got into.
