It's very labor-intensive. Even if you don't use chemical fertilizers, all the inputs into soil fertility cost money, time, and massive labor. Truckload after truckload of compost, mulch, and other soil amendments that then have to be unloaded by hand and transported to various beds, and dug in. It is not possible to generate enough compost on site to fertilize a large garden, even if you compost dog and chiggen poop, which I do. Water costs money--if you garden a lot the water bill can be over $200/month. Even seeds represent a significant expense if you buy organic non-GMO seed from small producers. I don't even try to add it up, but it's certainly easier to just buy organic produce at the big gro sto.
