The contrast is so compressed in modern phone cameras that they no longer look real. I get it - that's how you still get a clear, bright view of your mom's face even though she's standing in shadow with her back against the sun. And that's what most people want.
They're very good at recording a scene. But they're no longer good at creating pictures.
