I’m not sure, but I think I have heard jackspirko (npub1587…kv0n)​ talk about this lately. If I had to guess from what I have heard/read, I would say bacteria because it is similar to aquaponics and I believe you want beneficial bacteria to populate the medium in the wicking chamber.
