I would like to install an AC EVSE in our carport so we can charge our EV faster than 1.5kW. There's a good spot on a 180mm square wooden post in the corner, however I'd like to avoid messy surface conduits to provide the power.
I'm now trying to work out a way of core-drilling a cable run from the top of the post through to the mounting height of the EVSE. I just need a lathe with a spindle bore of 260mm...

Now that I have fully cut windows out of my personal computing life I'm looking for a replacement for VoidTools' "Everything". Under windows I had an autohotkey script bound to F1. I could hit F1 and start typing a file name search. The results appeared instantly, sorted by access time decreasing, and I could press down arrow and enter to select the top result.
Can I replicate this workflow under #Mint Cinnamon? Nemo search is OK, but the UX is clunkier.

It arrived! Yay!
The only fly in the ointment is that my speakers go into bluetooth pairing mode if they have power but no data, and they don't come back out when the data signal returns. I have to press the bluetooth button on the front of the speaker to kick them out. Annoying, but not a deal-breaker.

Yeah, the reporting of this story really annoyed me. News outlets are clambering over each-other to mention AI in every headline, so instead of the story being "Person lies about Uber" it's "Person lies about Uber WITH AI!"
Also the "journalism" of asking a an AI whether the text or the image of the name tag was AI generated is intellectually bankrupt.

I am waiting for a 2:1 USB-A switcher box so I can toggle between my speakers and headphones without having to un/replug the cable every time I want to switch.
This will be going in series with a similar switcher I already have for switching between my work laptop (hateful garbage) and home desktop (flawless glory).

Quick! I found a new feature of windows 11 to shout at!
Right click on a window's task bar entry. The context menu doesn't pop up at your cursor.
You know, where context menus normally pop up so you can select something from the menu with minimal cursor movement.
Instead the menu appears above the _centre of that group of tabs_.

Cheers! I haven't really dabbled in meshcore at all, or learned much about it beyond the basics.
Hosting a mastodon instance is a bit of a pain in the bum, but I'm reasonably sure bne.social would tolerate a polite meshcore bridge. There appears to be a relatively humane meshcore device API. It seems to use protobuf under the hood.

I made a quick #video showing the new functionality of my wifi receipt printer. I can print little pictures now, straight from my clipboard. Very cool.
The data is transmitted over MQTT, so no printer driver bullshit is involved. Plaintext works too, and I have a bash helper to print whatever I pipe to it.

Working on getting my receipt printer and scripts set up to print images! Working pretty well. I copy something into my clipboard, then type ctrl+alt+r. Based on the type of data in the clipboard it either prints the text or resizes the image to 384x384 and prints it out greyscale. Imagemagick is very rad.
The receipt printer is connected to wifi and listening on MQTT, so I can print from automations or whatever. Pretty neato.

I didn't have to change my Caddyfile after the update. The pre-built image was a drop-in replacement for the one I was building myself with:

Today I'm making another batch of rocky road ice cream. This time with the gummy bears swapped for Turkish delight. My extensive testing revealed that Turkish delight is softer when frozen as compared to gummy bears.
I'm also including dark chocolate, coconut and marshmallows. Family pressure means I have to add the crushed peanuts afterwards.
The base is a custard made from 2 cups cream, 1 cup milk, ¾ cup sugar, 4 egg yolks, 1 tbsp vanilla essence, sous vide at 80°C. Perfect every time.

After retiring my old desktop into a home server role, migrating everything off my old server to the new server, and adding one extra CCTV camera, the house night-time idle power usage went from 220W to 240W. Right. Finally installed that tube motor into the dining room blinds. It now closes automatically at 3 hours to sundown, to block direct light onto my boys' computer screens. It opens at sunrise. There's also a button on the wall for manual control.

This reminds me of that sysadmin advice I read one time: Create a huge empty file on the main disk when setting up a system. This way, when the drive inevitably fills up and you're trying to get it online in a panic, you can just delete the big empty file to buy you some time.

That's exactly my concern about putting network-critical stuff on a beefy server that handles a lot of other stuff. I'd like the critical things to be on little fast-booting ARM things. More graceful failures.

WTF RAM prices are absolutely bonkers. I looked at buying some old DDR4-2400 to match the stuff in my new-server-old-desktop and it's $10 more than what I paid for it 6 years ago.

I just got my first Matter device connected to HASS via Thread with a FOSS stack. None of the documentation is correct and complete, nothing works as it should. I'll try to rustle up the spoons to write some documentation before it falls out of my brain.

I normally develop/test inside a venv, then publish a wheel that gets installed into an image, then the container gets deployed to production from that image.
If the application has runtime file system dependencies it would make sense to dev/test inside a containerised environment, otherwise it's just added complexity for no benefit, IMO.

Eldest uses autodesk inventor for #cad at school. I intensely dislike this early indoctrination into proprietary software, so on his school holidays I have started teaching him #openscad.
Here's his first efforts: A pencil holder. He's learned about basic primitives and the translation, rotation and difference operators. He's picking it up very quickly, proud dad. I also had an excuse to teach him about the right hand rule.

I'm about to order four 8TB Seagate Barracuda Compute HDDs to make a ZFS RAID-Z1 array in my new server.
Can anyone save me from a terrible error? This server boots from a 1TB SSD. The spinny-disk array will be for #jellyfin and #frigate CCTV footage.
Four drives seems like a good balance of parity to storage, and 8TB seems small enough to repair a failed drive before another dies. Price is alright too.
