i underexplained why that switcher is so bad:
so there is this fallback condition where "if we don't know what the effort level should be, the default is high." Now that's not computed in a single place where one might expect it to, it's actually encoded in a dozen or two different places in different ways. The most common way that's encoded is by returning undefined with a comment that says "the API's default is high" (rather than actually returning a default value, which would ensure that what is displayed is always correct, but whatever).
however the LLM overgeneralizes here in an extremely funny way. Note that the possible menu values are hardcoded in the body of the function - so there is some possibility that the values that are displayed in the TUI are not the same as the ones hardcoded there. That's where the preposterous design of "passing the current string as well as left/right" (rather than, well, the normal way that forms always work) truly shines. Because "high is the default", if there current value is not in the hardcoded array... the default for the *current displayed value should be "high"*.
So it overgeneralized the default value being high as a fallback into "if we don't know what position in a list is currently highlighted, the current position is "high", so therefore if the user pressed left the current value should be "medium"." That's like saying "the zero point on my map is at 0 degrees latitude and 0 degrees longitude. I don't know where I am on the globe, but I was just told to go 10 degrees north, so therefore I am currently in Ghana."

Worth noting I was reading the *file reading tool* because i thought it would be *the simplest possible thing one could do* because it basically shouldn't be doing anything except preparing and sending strings or bytes to the backend.

If you've read any of these fancy markdown commands in any "framework" or in any live repository, you would know that **prompt engineering is not a thing** and **the only stable strategy is repeated begging** because there is a fundamental fucking god-blessed information theory-guaranteed injective relationship between the prompt and output domains where *you can't have enough intuition about the slot machine to use reliably in practice.*
i have burned thousand of hours training, fine tuning, and direct prompting language models, and there is a subtle indescribable art in understanding what they "know" to fashion inputs accordingly, but the combinatorics of language make it absolutely **laughable** for the sweet spot of "human brain can gain unconscious intuition" to lie exactly in the ungodly chasms of these brazillion parameter models and their outputs.

I regularly work in parallel by making good faith efforts to have the latest models (and the fancy fuckin multi-agent setup with whatever the most hyped markdown lore is on the cursor forums and git tag rankings) do what I do, and the answer remains the same: if i already know what i want to do and have a well worked out spec, and most of the surrounding code is already well scaffolded, then it can do most of the raw work writing the code on the page, but the places where it fails to adapt to local idiom, or when there is something that isn't already pretty much completely done, the process of reading, undoing, and redoing shit code is always more work than just writing the code. Because unless you're totally outside your element in a new language or framework *writing the code is not the hard part,* and if you *are* outside your element that's when you specifically become unable to evaluate the LLM output.

keeping up to date with "AI" skills is extremely easy actually, the most sophisticated setup i've seen is just a bunch of markdown files begging the necrotic grooves left in the statistical skin of language to pretend like they are different character archetypes wrapped by a (n assemblage of) IDE and CLI tools.

What do I even search for... "Procedurally generated tongue snake with noodle rope physics..."
I think I want it to be like a snake game where you steer the tongue with the crank, or like a fishing game where you cast the tongue and need to catch different dialogue options to make the tongue longer, but you actually can't make it long enough to reach the water.
Both of those require making a wiggly tongue, and ive only ever made anything with static sprites before. Seems like I'd need to generate the tongue parametrically here.

Shout out to Claire* and Eugen for doing the frontend on this, I got pulled away to work on other things and so they pushed it over da finish line and added a whole new AsyncRefresh feature on top.
#FetchAllReplies is for all the small instances out there! it makes a huge difference: not just seeing more stuff, but you can really feel how big of a deal it was to have been missing all the second-order convos that happen between people that weren't already mutuals once it started happening.
Moderation is the other big winner from reply fetching, as now harassment that would previously only be visible to the target and the poster can be spotted, reported, and removed by anyone passing by.

i hadn't "taken poison on purpose and just full on vibe coded as a bit" in awhile, so i gave it a whirl trying to mimic the manic intensity of some of the PRs i see nowadays. i guess i didn't really appreciate how anyone who talks about using LLMs for code is eliding the fact that they are stupendously wealthy or otherwise have access to resources, because doing some stuff i do for free for like an hour on cheap mode cost me $15, which is the maximum i will spent on a bit of this caliber. if i was actually "working" with that there's no way it would cost me less than $200 a day to simply do things i do on my own now.

torrents are just bundles of hashes and a file layout! they (or v2 torrents at least) are actually a really nice way to do content addressing for files and directories. so when combined with the rest of activitypub, e.g. being able to do updates, sign objects, extend them with additional vocabularies, then you get something very interesting indeed....

the prestige pyramid has inverted itself, and academics didn't even notice. the brands we spent years fashioning an experiment to compete for placement in are all publishing AI slop. this is the era of the cashout before the business model swap - the grinding intermediate before the publishers lock out the legacy metadata systems to replace the old prestige hierarchy with the Academic Feed, stillborn half a decade behind the information profiteering industry because academics can't be bothered to think of themselves as part of this world.

This is a proposal for how to migrate all your stuff along with you when you move instances.
The gist:<li>Send a request to move along with a set of stuff you'd like to bring with you. Moderators (optionally) can, approve, send back a change request, or deny. If the changes look ok, start the move, if not, hey you avoided incompatible moderation. Should be possible to layer in any kind of bulk actions you might want: "everything except my DMs," "strip attachments," "only my favorite posts," "nothing," etc. </li><li>keep a public collection of move events signed by both the source and target for durable, portable proof that you are the same person as the old account</li><li>the new instance crawls your old account and grabs whatever you specified, and then posts a mapping from old URIs to new URIs.</li><li>other instances can then immediately remap the URIs so e.g. future interactions get sent to the right place, and then gradually update their local versions over time, spacing out traffic.</li>
Just using existing ActivityPub mechanisms. There are 6 new terms.
Bonus: lays the next steps to migrate to content addressed URIs, decouple accounts from instances, and merge and split accounts.
It being a draft means that there is a 60 day (or longer) public comment period, and feedback/edits/etc. Are very much welcome.

I don't really have words for how funny this is:
the department of justice distributed the documents as a single image per page, with no information about which document they belonged to in the filename. So they group the pages into documents by including two fields "document_number" and "page_number" in the example JSON output - no explanation about what those fields should be in the system prompt. so not only is the text as trustworthy as a statistical amalgamation of the structure of legal documents and epstein news, the "documents" are *effectively random* groups of pages in *effectively random* order.

"AI" is just so convenient. Finally we are no longer beholden to traditional OCR which requires a few clicks or commands to yield highly accurate text with predictable failure modes.
Now all you have to do is explain the entire nature of what OCR is, how "reading" works, and how "documents" as a representation of language work. If you remember to insist repeatedly that the position in which text is laid out in two dimensions impacts its representation as a string, you may yield ?????

Wow this sucks so bad.
a person posted on /r/datahoarder that they have created an archive of the Epstein files with added metadata like mentioned people and etc. But everything is LLM-generated.... Including the "full text" of the documents.
Rather than OCRing them, they were fed to chatGPT with a system prompt that told it that it was an expert at OCR.

Alright it's late and i need to go to bed, but here's a draft FEP to do full account migration with posts and whatever other kinda objects you want to bring with you. It's a trivial expansion of existing ActivityPub/streams systems and supports gradual migration as it's implemented and after an account migration. It should be possible to migrate pretty much everything this way, both private and public objects.
criticism, feedback, revisions, etc. welcome - i don't think this is a "final version" and there are certainly things i overlooked.

LLM refactors are certainly not refactors, not even close. turns out generating a shitload of code that is loosely inspired by existing code has an extremely high error rate once you get into hundreds of lines. in awe at LLMs ability to turn operations which are easy, fully deterministic, and take a few minutes tops into a totally random shitshow

d) all members are welcome to join the social working group and take part in moderation.
if the only recourse you have for moderation decisions is publicly pestering the mods, the process has failed. if there are people that can't be deposed, power isn't shared. if power isn't shared, decentralization is meaningless.
