I have improved the terminology around NIP-29 group visibility and access. The problem I'm tackling is not of those groups that need e2e encrypted comms, but the ones that want a moderated place to talk and publish all kinds of content like chat, threads, polls, articles, wikis, etc.
Groups for gathering around common interests and goals like fitness, open source projects and relay-based communities fit this criteria. If you want and need maximum privacy you are better off not using nostr. I've heard SimpleX has great privacy but I'm not sufficiently acquainted with how it works to recommend it.
I started using the NIP terminology but I think this is way more clear. It has never been my intention to mislead anyone.

Took me a few minutes. The relay room spec is 80% copied from NIP-29, I hope we can converge into something we all implement and don't fragment communities. We are already small so having different specs hurts both approaches imho.

imho we can reuse kinds 1 for poasts and 1111 replies. the only new kinds the NIP needs are 9 for chat and group/moderation actions.

yo! I'm happy to announce the first release of chachi, a relay-based group (NIP-29) client for the web. NIP-29 allows creating groups that can be read by anyone or only authenticated users. These groups can be open to new members or require explicit approval from the group admins.
Every group gets a chat and a timeline of posts. I'll add more content types such as long-form and video in the future. Check out these videos explaining the main features of chachi.

With top-level groups relays won't need explicit support for NIP-29. Existing relays (nos.lol, frens.nostr1.com) and NIP-29 Groups (0xchat Open Group, habla, Robosats, etc.) can function as communities.

I see, but aren't hex pubkeys 64 characters long instead of 32? If so only 9 char remain for group id. 0xchat relay seems to be generating some big ass group ID's that are 64 characters long, groups.fiatjaf.com and relay.groups.nip29.com generate 10 char IDs so I can't a-tag those either.

khathru NIP-29 relays are rejecting events that have a-tags due to a very strict "large tags" policy: https://github.com/fiatjaf/khatru/blob/d4334ac2bb863503cc6348894027461b6d8d4088/README.md?plain=1#L76 one use case I had in mind was to be able to share groups in chats by referencing their metadata event which is replaceable but this prevents me from doing it.
could we relax this @npub180c…h6w6 @npub18c5…0we7 @npub10td…x2wl or should I only include text references on the content?
