This leaves many in the community with a sense of a theft of agency; a self-evident reality that “our” environment – our dùthchas as the Gaelic calls heritage in the land – is no longer “ours”, but is being progressively appropriated as “theirs”. Some dispute the application of the term humane. But, unless we are vegans, how do we think that our meat, fish and eggs are produced? To liken the guga hunt to bull fighting, fox hunting or pheasant shooting is a false equivalence. The hunt is not for “sport”. It “entertains” no spectators. What, then, renders it a matter of culture, tradition and heritage?
At the core lies a principle that thinkers on culture and development call “the implicit meaning of local practices”. It’s how, when you unpack embedded local customs, you’ll often find far more than meets the eye, joined up like mycelia in implicit networks that sustain a community’s social cohesion. Like the body, communities too have immune systems that implicitly protect integrity. For example, islanders of my generation remember the 1966 seamen’s strike that ran for six weeks. Whereas country areas were OK, some townsfolk were hard-pressed for basic supplies. That memory stands us in good stead given that the isles today sit at the end of just-in-time global supply chains. Being mindful of this at the time of Covid, crofters in Lewis talked among each other as to what they might fall back should food shortages have occurred. Had push come to shove, they would have summoned up traditional ecological knowledge. That’s what such as the guga hunt embeds in the cultural immune system. It’s an implicit meaning of a local practice. Moreover, like other indigenous peoples, islanders worry at the impacts of modernity upon the young. As a time-served deck hand on the CalMac ferries put it to me last week: “They’re not on the job, they’re just on their phones, and don’t have the same initiative.”
Murray ends his book with a striking poem. He foresees a time at the Old Cemetery in Ness when the graves will open. The dead will rise and walk, and they will see what it is that we “have no longer held in safe-keeping”. They will find “that bog has choked both drain and furrow”, and they will be astonished at such “weak and feckless offspring who let slip / rich legacies once granted by these shades”..........................................

Beneath the veil of religious tolerance sits a proposal that would, for the first time, make a woman’s own voice legally unnecessary at her wedding. The consultation argues that “dignity is to some extent subjective” and that marriage ceremonies should reflect different cultural and religious traditions. It suggests that requiring spoken consent is, for some faiths, “an imposition” that conflicts with established practice. Its answer is to redefine consent itself. Rather than insisting that both parties verbally agree to the marriage, the Government proposes that consent may instead be expressed “through actions”, so long as the officiant and witnesses “share an understanding” of what those actions mean. The Family Education Trust highlights these and other flaws. A briefing from the charity explains a Muslim girl whose marriage has been arranged by her family could, in principle, remain veiled and silent throughout a ceremony held in her family home, yet leave it legally married because the officiant and witnesses interpreted her gestures as consent.
The Government itself accepts that allowing weddings in private homes “could make it harder to identify forced, predatory, sham marriages or wider abuse”.
The consultation acknowledges that six in ten women married in Islamic ceremonies in Britain have no legal marriage at all. One would think, after the colossal failure of iPads in schools, we would learn that children deserve evidence-based education, not expensive digital experiments. Yet the lure of educational technology with its glitzy marketing campaigns remains big business, estimated to be worth £106 billion globally by 2034. It has now inspired what has been billed as London’s first ever “AI-enabled primary school”, due to open in the capital next year. Other schools have, of course, adopted the use of AI in some areas, but Inspired Edge has a specific plan to integrate widespread use of the technology into the classroom. Rather than using AI to teach pupils directly, it will use AI software to help students learn at their own pace, while being able to “diagnose misconceptions, provide practice” and allow parents to access a “24/7 dashboard to see their child’s learning in real time”.
However, there are clear problems with this approach. At the risk of sounding like a Luddite, there is simply no need for AI in primary education. Not only is there little evidence that it will actually improve education, but there is also reason to believe that it undercuts how children learn and think independently. The idea of seven-year-olds learning the three Rs in some strange simulacrum of PC World is vaguely terrifying. The data on technology improving test scores is already weak — although British schools now spend an eye-watering £900 million on it a year — but for the primary curriculum it is non-existent. What we do know is that younger students, and those with lower levels of education generally, appear to be most vulnerable to the negative effects of AI on learning, suggesting that it may diminish users’ capacity for deep reflective thinking, promote cognitive laziness, and weaken problem-solving abilities. So it seems ridiculous to allow primary school students, with all their delicate neuroplasticity, access to software and screens that shift the focus from understanding to mere completion, which undermines the depth and richness of learning.

Now perhaps this is simply an instance of the well-known phenomenon that once you have first noticed something you can’t help but keep noticing it, but do we detect a hint of the same blundering panic in the police messaging around Ann Widdecombe’s death?
Nobody expects the police to have all the answers within a day or two of a murder (although it’s obviously nice if they do). Had they simply said that they had an open mind as to motive, nobody would have thought any less of them for it. Instead Matt Longman, an assistant chief constable at Devon and Cornwall Police, went out of his way to say that there was “nothing to suggest it was politically motivated” — only for the case to be handed over to counter-terrorism officers less than 24 hours later. (Naturally, the people using it to call for yet another clampdown on social media — apparently our political class’s one and only reaction to a confirmed or possible assassination — don’t seem to think that this statement applies to them. But using an event to call for policy action is politicising that event; the Snowdrop campaign to ban handguns politicised Dunblane. That isn’t a problem unless you think that “politicising” something is inherently bad and thus only something your opponents do.)

If you have to insist your plans are not about suppressing free speech or censoring political debate, they probably are. Lucy Powell, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and a close ally of Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham, wants to use the Representation of the People Bill to impose legal duties on online platforms similar to the impartiality rules that apply to broadcasters.
Powell argues that, in an age when most people get their news from social media, users should have access to reliable sources so they can make informed decisions at the ballot box. How convenient, then, that the Government is also proposing to require social media companies to prioritise what it considers to be "trustworthy" news sources. The Free Speech Union has already identified the Representation of the People Bill as legislation of significant concern. Taken together, these proposals raise important questions about the future regulation of online political debate.

Muslims deserve that respect already, easily, without anyone else having to fast. This is a public health system telling employees how to practice religion. ⚠️Bulgarian Man Guilty Of Assaulting 12YO Girl In Dundee
Ilia Belov, 22, has been found guilty of assaulting a 12YO girl and acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards four girls aged 12-14. The court heard Belov made sexual remarks to the girl and pushed the 12YO, hit her head.
Belov claimed he was acting in self defence after seeing a knife, and denied making sexual comments. Sheriff Timothy Niven-Smith rejected his evidence as "wholly unconvincing and self-serving," calling it a "revisionist" excuse.
The sheriff accepted the girls’ accounts, supported by CCTV and other witnesses, and said Belov’s remarks triggered the confrontation. Bulova's sister, Nadjedzha Belova, had already pleaded guilty to the assault on the 13YO girl.
⚖️Sentencing for both is set for 5th August.
🌍The case went viral last year after footage of the girl holding a knife and axe circulated widely. Several high-profile commentators claimed the girls were lying and were the aggressors, some called it racist far-right propaganda.

Sky News viewers on Sunday morning saw the SNP leader asked: "Why are you still putting people with penises in women's prisons?" At Holyrood last week, he repeatedly refused to say if biological males held in the female prison estate are men or women.
Campaign group For Women Scotland is taking the Scottish Government back to court over its refusal to implement the Supreme Court ruling, which made it clear that women are entitled to single-sex spaces under British equality law. Phillips summarised the judgment for Mr Swinney as "sex means biological sex". Despite this, he waffled "well, there's obviously some complex legal issues that have got to be worked through... the Supreme Court judgment indicated that there is a necessity for us to take account of the rights of transgender individuals and that's the issue that has to be considered..."
The interviewer tried again, putting it to Mr Swinney that it was "as clear as day that you can't put a person with a penis in a women's prison". The First Minister responded: "But when you look at the Supreme Court judgment what they said was that nothing that we do – and we as a government have to always obey the law – can in any way undermine the rights that are assured to individuals who are transgender individuals." Asked if he was "dragging his feet", Mr Swinney denied this by saying "in various other areas we have changed the regulations and the guidance that are in place". This appears to contradict his assertion – made only seconds earlier – on the rights of transgender individuals being assured by the Supreme Court.

The disciplinary processes these women are being put through are interminable. They are more akin to the struggle sessions seen under Chairman Mao. The process is the punishment, which provokes fear and instils control. Why ask for your right to single-sex spaces to be upheld if the consequence could be losing your income, your profession and your reputation? Biological sex is real. That is not ‘stoking a culture war’ or a matter of opinion. It is a legal and biological fact. The victories of the Darlington Nurses and Sandie Peggie should serve as a warning to NHS Trusts who continue to waste taxpayers’ money on spurious disciplinary investigations into women who just want to protect their legal rights and beliefs which are protected under the law.

The 20-year-old denied a charge of possessing a recording likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism but he was found guilty after a trial in September.
At Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, Mahmood, of Platt Brook Way in Sheldon, Birmingham, was sentenced to four years in a young offender institution.
Judge Simon Drew KC said Mahmood would serve an extended period of three years on licence after his custodial sentence expired "in order to protect the public in the future".

I’ve been teaching in British universities for about 15 years and over that time, I’ve watched a few trends unfold. Like when they started needing safe spaces and denying basic facts about human biology. (That’s basically over now, by the way.) Or wearing hideous footwear, and dressing in androgynous black-and-white clothing. All of it the wrong size. (It’s not me that’s mistaken, it’s the kids.) But probably most noteworthy is the dramatic increase in students entitled to special accommodations because of disability. Every year, more essays come in after the deadlines, because more students get extensions lasting weeks, even months. On Mondays I receive automated emails reminding me to be very careful when asking certain students questions in seminars, or expecting them to contribute in any way (apparently, they might not be able to handle it if I do). Despite the fact that I teach political philosophy — a subject impossible to execute without precise handling of language — the university bureaucracy says that the quality of written language needs to be disregarded when assessing some candidates’ coursework. All of this, and more, is due to accommodations made under the rubric of disability.
This explosion has not been driven by campuses suddenly becoming wheelchair accessible. (I happen to be a wheelchair user myself, and so I assure you that I take disability very seriously.) Instead, students are being diagnosed with impairment disorders relating to their ability to learn. And of these, four constitute the bulk: attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and non-profound autism spectrum disorder (ASD). So what is going on? The truth is, it’s complicated. And as a result, two of the most common answers just won’t do. The first answer (which The Atlantic reporting leans towards) is that it’s basically all a scam. Here’s the thing: students with registered disabilities are eligible for deadline extensions, extra time during exams, and a whole raft of entitlements regarding seminar attendance and participation. Having realised that students with impairment diagnoses get such special consideration, sharp-elbowed middle-class parents reckon it is a sure-fire way to win their offspring competitive advantage. Shopping around for helpful diagnoses from pliant physicians, the aspirational classes respond to prevailing incentives. Cue the surge in presentation of the disorders.
To be fair, The Atlantic’s assessment isn’t completely wrong. Sometimes the lengths to which privileged parents will go for their kids are truly astonishing, especially in the United States.

The five-foot-tall complainant then fled to their room before heading to the television area, where they were followed once again by Thomas and Badejo, prosecutors said. Badejo, 29, 'kept a lookout' while Thomas pushed them onto a sofa and raped them again, Kate Bex KC, prosecuting, told Inner London Crown Court. Badejo is jointly charged on this count for allegedly acting as Thomas's accomplice. The attacks allegedly took place on the Eden Ward secure psychiatric unit of Lambeth Hospital in south London on April 12, 2022.

The last twice we were at the Christmas concerts by candlelight
Scottish Ensemble events in the cathedral they spoiled them by
including modern crap in among the trad, it isn't what people
want to hear at such an event either. First time a number walked
out in the interval and didn't come back, next year much grumbling
again, last year we didn't go because changed their dates and it
was no longer a Friday, so didn't suit us, but were thinking no
anyway because they seem hell bent on wrecking it.

Named only as Mels van B, he allegedly sexually abused 18 girls, including the daughter of his best friend, and made sexual images of the others. Most of his victims were of primary school age but the court was told he filmed himself abusing his own daughter, who was just a few months old at the time.
Van B is being prosecuted for crimes committed between 2013 and August 2024 at his home in Barendrecht, or at the campsite in Hoeven, in the province of Noord-Brabant, where he rented a pitch for his caravan. The abuse was exposed after a 10-year-old girl woke up during an assault at the campsite in the summer of 2024. She texted her parents to bring her home a day early.

Not even this has been enough to nudge privileged Western activists to so much as summon up a hashtag in solidarity with Iran’s women. Instead, those quick to ‘blackout’ social media, take the knee or don a keffiyeh for supposedly ‘right’ cause, have determinedly looked the other way. The presence of women at the heart of Iran’s uprising is significant. By protesting against laws mandating strict dress codes and compulsory wearing of the hijab, women are not just defying Iran’s Islamist dictatorship, but also the sexist and oppressive practices associated with Islam more broadly. Anti-hijab protests expose the myth, endlessly repeated by the BBC and other liberal news outlets, that the latest round of protests in Iran took off simply because of rising inflation and the spiralling cost of living. Iran’s women are not taking to the streets meekly begging for food or asking for a little extra money. They are marching in defiance of a brutal regime that has terrorised all citizens. And they are burning hijabs, a hated symbol of women’s particular oppression.
Throughout this recent wave of protest, mass displays of solidarity from the West’s activist class have been notable only by their absence. Greta Thunberg, vocal in criticising Israel, seemingly has nothing to say about the killing of women in Iran. The same is true of Dawn French, Olivia Colman, Nicola Coughlan, Paloma Faith, Juliette Binoche… the list goes on and on. Celebrities queued up to sign petitions, pen open letters, make TikToks and join protests critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Students established protest camps on posh university lawns and hundreds of thousands of people marched through Britain’s city centres week after week, purportedly in solidarity with Palestinians. But when it comes to supporting Iranian women? Silence. Actually, what’s happening in the West is more shameful than mere silence. At the very same time that women in Iran are defying the morality police, burning hijabs and demanding ‘freedom’, Europe’s cultural elite are busy promoting hijabi-chic in advertising campaigns and public-information posters. The garment rejected as oppressive in Iran is being normalised in Europe. Here, the hijab is promoted as striking a blow for ‘diversity’ and a challenge to ‘Islamophobia’.

Currently, she can see and read most lines of letters on an eye test chart. On occasion, he’ll turn his attention elsewhere and stand outside a feminist conference, screaming abuse at attendees who refuse to buy into the fantasy that trans women are actually women. Whether devoting himself to making Jews feel unsafe or spending miserable afternoons threatening women who reject the presence of men in changing rooms and rape crisis centres, the contemporary British radical goes equipped with two essentials.
The first is a terrifying certainty. The second is a face-mask.
I’ve never had much time for these cosplayers, these weekend insurgents with their incoherent views and their violent rhetoric but, over recent days, my contempt for them has only deepened. Since December 28, people across Iran have been on their streets, demanding the end of the Islamic regime that has terrorised them for decades. With international media denied access to the country, citizens have, through shaky live streams on their smartphones, showed the world what real revolutionary courage looks like. How small the masked undergraduate waving a Hamas flag on a British street looks when compared with those Iranian women who – under threat of the most horrific punishment – have thrown off the hijabs they are compelled to wear. While British ideologues align themselves, from the safety of the West, with the Islamists of Hamas and Hezbollah, people across Iran are saying “no more” to the theocrats who, for years, have supported those terror groups.
And they are doing it with humbling bravery.

Last year, former Downing Street advisor Dominic Cummings wrote of a conversation with senior Gulf State figures. Arab elites, Cummings claimed, were wary of sending their children to British universities. Places like Oxford and Cambridge were, they said, virtual madrassas. Their offspring might return home as rabid Islamists, their heads turned by the many-tentacled Muslim Brotherhood. This prompted a withering response from the usually mild-mannered Rory Stewart, who accused Cummings of “bullshitting.” Then, six months after Stewart’s takedown, the UAE announced it was restricting funding for its nationals planning on attending courses at UK universities, precisely as Cummings wrote. The highly-organised Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, linked to the Federation of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS), is increasingly influential on UK campuses. Many Middle Eastern governments view the Brotherhood, which seeks a single Islamic caliphate, as a terrorist group, lamenting its presence in the UK. Stewart is yet to respond to the news from the UAE, but his reaction was telling — Stewart is, after all, an Eton and Oxford-educated former diplomat. In short, he is an exemplar of the infamous Foreign Office “Camel Corps” mindset.
This is nothing new. As a young special branch officer in the 1990s, I attended an MI5 presentation on the influence of Islamist groups in the UK. French intelligence, famously, dubbed the capital “Londonistan”. Spooks and cops rolled their eyes at Westminster’s indifference to London’s reputation as a viper’s nest of Islamic radicalism, but the Foreign Office line was steadfast — better to tolerate extremist clerics and activists, in order to encourage “influence” and “engagement.” After 9/11, this approach eventually crept into domestic counter-extremism, one where maintaining “community cohesion” was paramount. Activists with controversial views were even invited inside the police as advisors. Meanwhile, initiatives such as Prevent — a recurring target of Muslim Brotherhood campaigning — seem increasingly fixated on the far-Right, incels and anti-immigrant sentiment.

Teachers from two primary schools have begun strike action after pupils kicked and bit staff and brought knives into the classroom. Staff at Lily Lane Primary School and Ravensfield Primary School in Manchester say they have been physically attacked and some pupils are too scared to attend class.
Teachers also says there have been instances of pupils being hit, kicked and even spat at. Both schools are part of the Changing Lives in Collaboration Trust (CLiC) and following the announcement of strike action, the trust said the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff was its 'highest priority'.
The trust said teachers were 'suffering high levels of stress and anxiety which are affecting their entire lives.'

Patient safety and evidence-based care must be the priority for the NHS regarding medical interventions for children. The PATHWAYS puberty blocker trial is not a prioritisation of patient safety as it lacks an evidence base.
Developing the evidence base should be the priority before a trial on a new cohort of children is even considered.
The Cass Review should not be used as justification to run a trial of puberty blockers. This was only one Recommendation of 32 Recommendations in total. To go forward with this one Recommendation while ignoring others that are crucial to put in place first, is using the Cass Review to implement an agenda, not following it to ensure patient safety and evidence-based treatment.
Data obtained by the Telegraph showed that 3,490 women were referred for ‘masculinising chest surgery’ on the NHS between 2021 and 2023, and that the number has risen slightly each year, from 1,089 in 2021 to 1,164 in 2022 and 1,237 in 2023.
Over three years, more than 780 women were referred for ‘masculinising genital gender reassignment surgery’, an experimental surgery with poor results and commonly-experienced complications.
The Telegraph report tells us ‘As many as 80 per cent of people using those services are females between the ages of 17 and 25’, which aligns with the figure reported by the Cass Review that referrals were ‘70-80 per cent birth-registered females under the age of 25’.

Sexual violence against children is endemic, systemic, and worsening across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to a new UNICEF report released today. While conflict remains a major driver, the report shows cases documented in communities across every province and rising sharply since 2022. As shown in the report, nationwide data compiled by protection and gender-based violence service providers indicate that more than 35,000 cases of sexual violence against children were recorded nationwide in the first nine months of 2025, pointing to a crisis that continues to escalate. In 2024, nearly 45,000 cases against children were recorded, accounting for almost 40 per cent of all reported sexual violence cases – three times higher than in 2022.
These figures point to sustained and widespread harm, with the true toll likely far higher due to under-reporting, as fear, stigma, insecurity, and limited access to services prevent many survivors from ever reporting or seeking help.
"Case workers describe mothers walking for hours to reach clinics with daughters who can no longer walk after being assaulted. Families say that fear of stigma and retaliation often keeps them from reporting the abuse,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “Stories like these are repeated across provinces, exposing an entrenched crisis driven by insecurity, inequality, and weak support systems.”

More than 6,000 Scottish school pupils have not attended school in the past six years, according to new figures. And over 70,000 have missed more than half of school since 2019, figures obtained by the Scottish Conservatives show. A Shetland knitting organisation has raised thousands of pounds to help “preserve, promote, and protect” their heritage from dying out.
Shetlands Organisation for Knitters (SOK) launched a Crowdfunder in November after declaring that Shetland’s knitting heritage was facing “several serious challenges”. A goal of £40,000 would mean that the community could record more senior knitters sharing their story and practices and offer training sessions to younger Shetlanders to keep their specific knit style alive for generations to come.
With two weeks of fundraising to go, the organisation achieved their goal and any further funds raised will give them breathing room as they start sessions in January. “I think that what SOK is doing is a great idea,” said Janette Budge who is a Shetland knitwear designer and tutor.
She teaches Fair Isle knitting – a traditional technique using two colours per row to create intricate, geometric patterns, named after the remote Fair Isle island where it originated.
She said: “They think as early as the 1840s that Fair Isle knitting was being made in the island of Fair Isle.
