Labour wants to censor social media during general elections
Lucy Powell is seeking to impose legal duties on online platforms similar to impartiality rules for broadcasters
If you have to insist your plans are not about suppressing free speech or censoring political debate, they probably are. Lucy Powell, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and a close ally of Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham, wants to use the Representation of the People Bill to impose legal duties on online platforms similar to the impartiality rules that apply to broadcasters.
Powell argues that, in an age when most people get their news from social media, users should have access to reliable sources so they can make informed decisions at the ballot box. How convenient, then, that the Government is also proposing to require social media companies to prioritise what it considers to be "trustworthy" news sources. The Free Speech Union has already identified the Representation of the People Bill as legislation of significant concern. Taken together, these proposals raise important questions about the future regulation of online political debate.

Sky News viewers on Sunday morning saw the SNP leader asked: "Why are you still putting people with penises in women's prisons?" At Holyrood last week, he repeatedly refused to say if biological males held in the female prison estate are men or women.
Campaign group For Women Scotland is taking the Scottish Government back to court over its refusal to implement the Supreme Court ruling, which made it clear that women are entitled to single-sex spaces under British equality law. Phillips summarised the judgment for Mr Swinney as "sex means biological sex". Despite this, he waffled "well, there's obviously some complex legal issues that have got to be worked through... the Supreme Court judgment indicated that there is a necessity for us to take account of the rights of transgender individuals and that's the issue that has to be considered..."
The interviewer tried again, putting it to Mr Swinney that it was "as clear as day that you can't put a person with a penis in a women's prison". The First Minister responded: "But when you look at the Supreme Court judgment what they said was that nothing that we do – and we as a government have to always obey the law – can in any way undermine the rights that are assured to individuals who are transgender individuals." Asked if he was "dragging his feet", Mr Swinney denied this by saying "in various other areas we have changed the regulations and the guidance that are in place". This appears to contradict his assertion – made only seconds earlier – on the rights of transgender individuals being assured by the Supreme Court.

The Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has acknowledged for the first time that thousands of people were killed during the protests that rocked Iran over the last two weeks.
In a speech on Thursday, Khamenei said that thousands of people had been killed, “some in an inhuman, savage manner”, and blamed the US for the death toll. The supreme leader railed against the US president, Donald Trump, whom he called a “criminal” for his support of demonstrations, and called for strict punishment of protesters.
Khamenei said: “By God’s grace, the Iranian nation must break the back of the seditionists just as it broke the back of the sedition.”
Iranian authorities also released a compilation of footage on Saturday that purported to show armed individuals carrying guns and knives alongside regular protesters – evidence, they said, of foreign saboteurs.
Another senior Iranian cleric demanded the execution of protesters, demanding that “armed hypocrites should be put to death”.

In 2023-24 there were 234 transgender inmates in the prison estate in England and Wales, the majority of whom were biologically male. More than 70 per cent are serving sentences for sex offences and violent crimes. In a last-minute attempt to save Ms Melle’s job, Claire Coutinho, the shadow equalities minister, has started a petition urging the trust to drop the disciplinary action. The disciplinary processes these women are being put through are interminable. They are more akin to the struggle sessions seen under Chairman Mao. The process is the punishment, which provokes fear and instils control. Why ask for your right to single-sex spaces to be upheld if the consequence could be losing your income, your profession and your reputation? Biological sex is real. That is not ‘stoking a culture war’ or a matter of opinion. It is a legal and biological fact. The victories of the Darlington Nurses and Sandie Peggie should serve as a warning to NHS Trusts who continue to waste taxpayers’ money on spurious disciplinary investigations into women who just want to protect their legal rights and beliefs which are protected under the law.

A man has been jailed for possessing a bomb-making video which explained how to make explosives similar to those previously used in UK terror attacks.
Adam Mahmood asked a TikTok user to send him the instructional video, which prosecutors described as a "detailed guide" on producing an explosive substance with a detonator and shrapnel.
The 20-year-old denied a charge of possessing a recording likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism but he was found guilty after a trial in September.
At Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, Mahmood, of Platt Brook Way in Sheldon, Birmingham, was sentenced to four years in a young offender institution.
Judge Simon Drew KC said Mahmood would serve an extended period of three years on licence after his custodial sentence expired "in order to protect the public in the future".

An Italian judge has now handed him a five-year sentence, having reclassified charges against him from 'aggravated sexual assault against a minor' to 'sexual acts with a child', according to Corriere della Sera. The ruling also followed a fast-track trial which allowed the sentence to be reduced by one-third. The decision has enraged politicians, with League (Lega) MP Simona Bordonali demanding a change to the law. 'The mere five-year sentence handed down to a person responsible for the atrocious and unspeakable violence against a child leaves me stunned,' she said.

Himself is almost on his knees with frustration these last few
years re the kids getting stupider and stupider, they don't care

I’ve been teaching in British universities for about 15 years and over that time, I’ve watched a few trends unfold. Like when they started needing safe spaces and denying basic facts about human biology. (That’s basically over now, by the way.) Or wearing hideous footwear, and dressing in androgynous black-and-white clothing. All of it the wrong size. (It’s not me that’s mistaken, it’s the kids.) But probably most noteworthy is the dramatic increase in students entitled to special accommodations because of disability. Every year, more essays come in after the deadlines, because more students get extensions lasting weeks, even months. On Mondays I receive automated emails reminding me to be very careful when asking certain students questions in seminars, or expecting them to contribute in any way (apparently, they might not be able to handle it if I do). Despite the fact that I teach political philosophy — a subject impossible to execute without precise handling of language — the university bureaucracy says that the quality of written language needs to be disregarded when assessing some candidates’ coursework. All of this, and more, is due to accommodations made under the rubric of disability.
This explosion has not been driven by campuses suddenly becoming wheelchair accessible. (I happen to be a wheelchair user myself, and so I assure you that I take disability very seriously.) Instead, students are being diagnosed with impairment disorders relating to their ability to learn. And of these, four constitute the bulk: attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and non-profound autism spectrum disorder (ASD). So what is going on? The truth is, it’s complicated. And as a result, two of the most common answers just won’t do. The first answer (which The Atlantic reporting leans towards) is that it’s basically all a scam. Here’s the thing: students with registered disabilities are eligible for deadline extensions, extra time during exams, and a whole raft of entitlements regarding seminar attendance and participation. Having realised that students with impairment diagnoses get such special consideration, sharp-elbowed middle-class parents reckon it is a sure-fire way to win their offspring competitive advantage. Shopping around for helpful diagnoses from pliant physicians, the aspirational classes respond to prevailing incentives. Cue the surge in presentation of the disorders.
To be fair, The Atlantic’s assessment isn’t completely wrong. Sometimes the lengths to which privileged parents will go for their kids are truly astonishing, especially in the United States.

Six-foot and heavily built Thomas, 25, then blocked a doorway, pushed the alleged victim into a cupboard, forced their trousers down and raped them, jurors heard. The five-foot-tall complainant then fled to their room before heading to the television area, where they were followed once again by Thomas and Badejo, prosecutors said. Badejo, 29, 'kept a lookout' while Thomas pushed them onto a sofa and raped them again, Kate Bex KC, prosecuting, told Inner London Crown Court. Badejo is jointly charged on this count for allegedly acting as Thomas's accomplice. The attacks allegedly took place on the Eden Ward secure psychiatric unit of Lambeth Hospital in south London on April 12, 2022.

The last twice we were at the Christmas concerts by candlelight
Scottish Ensemble events in the cathedral they spoiled them by
including modern crap in among the trad, it isn't what people
want to hear at such an event either. First time a number walked
out in the interval and didn't come back, next year much grumbling
again, last year we didn't go because changed their dates and it
was no longer a Friday, so didn't suit us, but were thinking no
anyway because they seem hell bent on wrecking it.

A father put sleeping tablets in his daughter’s friends’ chocolate milk before sexually abusing them during sleepovers at his home and a campsite in the Netherlands, a court has heard. On the first day of his six-day trial in Rotterdam, the 46-year-old admitted using high doses of sedatives to keep his victims, alleged to number as many as 31, asleep. Named only as Mels van B, he allegedly sexually abused 18 girls, including the daughter of his best friend, and made sexual images of the others. Most of his victims were of primary school age but the court was told he filmed himself abusing his own daughter, who was just a few months old at the time.
Van B is being prosecuted for crimes committed between 2013 and August 2024 at his home in Barendrecht, or at the campsite in Hoeven, in the province of Noord-Brabant, where he rented a pitch for his caravan. The abuse was exposed after a 10-year-old girl woke up during an assault at the campsite in the summer of 2024. She texted her parents to bring her home a day early.

It is impossible to overstate the bravery of Iran’s protesters. Men and women, united in opposition to the dictatorship, have taken to the streets in defiance of the threat to their lives. Not even this has been enough to nudge privileged Western activists to so much as summon up a hashtag in solidarity with Iran’s women. Instead, those quick to ‘blackout’ social media, take the knee or don a keffiyeh for supposedly ‘right’ cause, have determinedly looked the other way. The presence of women at the heart of Iran’s uprising is significant. By protesting against laws mandating strict dress codes and compulsory wearing of the hijab, women are not just defying Iran’s Islamist dictatorship, but also the sexist and oppressive practices associated with Islam more broadly. Anti-hijab protests expose the myth, endlessly repeated by the BBC and other liberal news outlets, that the latest round of protests in Iran took off simply because of rising inflation and the spiralling cost of living. Iran’s women are not taking to the streets meekly begging for food or asking for a little extra money. They are marching in defiance of a brutal regime that has terrorised all citizens. And they are burning hijabs, a hated symbol of women’s particular oppression.
Throughout this recent wave of protest, mass displays of solidarity from the West’s activist class have been notable only by their absence. Greta Thunberg, vocal in criticising Israel, seemingly has nothing to say about the killing of women in Iran. The same is true of Dawn French, Olivia Colman, Nicola Coughlan, Paloma Faith, Juliette Binoche… the list goes on and on. Celebrities queued up to sign petitions, pen open letters, make TikToks and join protests critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Students established protest camps on posh university lawns and hundreds of thousands of people marched through Britain’s city centres week after week, purportedly in solidarity with Palestinians. But when it comes to supporting Iranian women? Silence. Actually, what’s happening in the West is more shameful than mere silence. At the very same time that women in Iran are defying the morality police, burning hijabs and demanding ‘freedom’, Europe’s cultural elite are busy promoting hijabi-chic in advertising campaigns and public-information posters. The garment rejected as oppressive in Iran is being normalised in Europe. Here, the hijab is promoted as striking a blow for ‘diversity’ and a challenge to ‘Islamophobia’.

Doctors say they have achieved the previously impossible - restoring sight and preventing blindness in people with a rare but dangerous eye conditon called hypotony. Moorfields hospital in London is the world's first dedicated clinic for the disorder and seven out of eight patients given the pioneering treatment have responded to the therapy, a pilot study shows.
One of them - the first-ever - is Nicki Guy, 47, who is sharing her story exclusively with the BBC. She says the results are incredible: "It's life-changing. It's given me everything back. I can see my child grow up. "I've gone from counting fingers and everything being really blurry to being able to see."
Currently, she can see and read most lines of letters on an eye test chart. She is one line away from what is legally required for driving - a massive change from being partially sighted, using a magnifying glass for anything close up and having to navigate around the house and outside largely using memory.

On occasion, he’ll turn his attention elsewhere and stand outside a feminist conference, screaming abuse at attendees who refuse to buy into the fantasy that trans women are actually women. Whether devoting himself to making Jews feel unsafe or spending miserable afternoons threatening women who reject the presence of men in changing rooms and rape crisis centres, the contemporary British radical goes equipped with two essentials.
The first is a terrifying certainty. The second is a face-mask.
I’ve never had much time for these cosplayers, these weekend insurgents with their incoherent views and their violent rhetoric but, over recent days, my contempt for them has only deepened. Since December 28, people across Iran have been on their streets, demanding the end of the Islamic regime that has terrorised them for decades. With international media denied access to the country, citizens have, through shaky live streams on their smartphones, showed the world what real revolutionary courage looks like. How small the masked undergraduate waving a Hamas flag on a British street looks when compared with those Iranian women who – under threat of the most horrific punishment – have thrown off the hijabs they are compelled to wear. While British ideologues align themselves, from the safety of the West, with the Islamists of Hamas and Hezbollah, people across Iran are saying “no more” to the theocrats who, for years, have supported those terror groups.
And they are doing it with humbling bravery.

Stewart is yet to respond to the news from the UAE, but his reaction was telling — Stewart is, after all, an Eton and Oxford-educated former diplomat. In short, he is an exemplar of the infamous Foreign Office “Camel Corps” mindset.
This is nothing new. As a young special branch officer in the 1990s, I attended an MI5 presentation on the influence of Islamist groups in the UK. French intelligence, famously, dubbed the capital “Londonistan”. Spooks and cops rolled their eyes at Westminster’s indifference to London’s reputation as a viper’s nest of Islamic radicalism, but the Foreign Office line was steadfast — better to tolerate extremist clerics and activists, in order to encourage “influence” and “engagement.” After 9/11, this approach eventually crept into domestic counter-extremism, one where maintaining “community cohesion” was paramount. Activists with controversial views were even invited inside the police as advisors. Meanwhile, initiatives such as Prevent — a recurring target of Muslim Brotherhood campaigning — seem increasingly fixated on the far-Right, incels and anti-immigrant sentiment.

They did so even on the same day as two British Jews were slain at their Manchester synagogue by an Islamist. Posh campus ‘radicals’, their privilege now draped in the flag of Palestine, have continued to throw their lot in with the Islamist cause. Some went so far as to stage quasi-celebratory events on last year’s 7 October anniversary to ‘honour the resistance’. One student society even advertised a ‘Palestine bake sale’, complete with the menacing strapline, ‘Time for dessert’.
The phenomenon of Islamo-leftism did not come from nowhere. From the 1960s onwards, a combination of disillusionment with Soviet Communism and a growing estrangement from the working class prompted a then emergent New Left to look elsewhere for a challenge to capitalism and increasingly the West itself. And so they looked to anti-colonial movements in the so-called Third World. Islamism, a thoroughly anti-Western form of religionised politics, born in colonial Egypt and India in the early 20th century and resurgent in the 1970s, soon began to make inroads in the West – and not just among the Muslim population. Think of the admiring glances some Western leftists cast on the Ayatollah Khomeini on the eve of the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Or more recently, think of the coalitions and alliances left-wing groups sought to form with assorted militant Muslim groups during the 1990s, and again in opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan during the 2000s. Indeed, the very term ‘Islamo-left’ emerged to refer to the left’s bridge-building efforts of this period.

He has since been charged with seven terrorism-related charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and funneling cryptocurrency to ISIS. Police alleged Khan worked with an individual named Allah Kareem and received instructions from a group to carry out attacks.
On May 31, a woman walking in Toronto was approached by three me, one armed with a handgun, another with a knife, who tried to force her into a vehicle. They fled when she screamed and a motorist intervened. On June 24 in Mississauga, three men in an Audi SUV armed with a handgun, rifle, and knife chased two women before being stopped by a passerby. Video footage captured the vehicle fleeing from the scene.
All three women were sexually assaulted, according to court filings.

The high-profile academic and gender-critical campaigner has backed a legal action against the prime minister and the civil service over claims that the Whitehall staff who participate in the “obviously political” annual marches are “in breach of laws on civil service impartiality”. Lawyers for the institute have now issued judicial review proceedings in a bid to stop officials participating on behalf of the civil service — “at taxpayers’ expense” — in Pride marches.
The group has argued in the written submissions that the current practice of endorsing and funding participation during work time — including, in some instances, T-shirts and banners reading “Civil Service Pride” — breaches the law on Whitehall impartiality.

Predictably, this has been the source of a great deal of local tension, with asylum seekers seen living state-funded lives in hotels while locals struggle amid deprivation and scarce social housing. Over the past year, however, a greater and more serious issue has come to the fore – the threat posed by the small-boats emergency to public safety, especially for women and girls.
During 2025, male small-boat arrivals have been responsible for a series of high-profile attacks in the UK. There was the shocking case of Afghan teenagers Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, who were both jailed for the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Leamington Spa, a normally a quiet, pleasant town in Warwickshire. Another Afghan national, 23-year-old Ahmad Mulakhil, recently confessed to raping a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton, also in Warwickshire. Then there was the case of Sudanese small-boat migrant Deng Chol Majek, who stabbed to death 27-year-old mother Rhiannon Whyte in Walsall. It really shouldn’t be a surprise that many people in Britain now feel deeply anxious over matters of border security and public safety. The countless local protests outside migrant hotels speak to a nation that is furious that the powers-that-be seem to be putting the comfort of young men who have entered the UK illegally above the safety and needs of actual citizens.

This led to her second great clash with the self-styled guardians of morality. Only this time Bardot-ism came out the worst. Where her youthful pouting against social convention won out against the men in suits who were clinging by their nicotine-stained fingernails to the prim moralism of the Fifties, her middle-aged rage against minority groups that mistreat animals was not so fortunate. She was dragged to court, charged and convicted, and fined thousands of euros, this time not for outraging public decency, but for hurting Muslims’ feelings. The bourgeois morality of the Fifties didn’t get her, but the neo-blasphemy laws of our era did.
Under France’s strict laws on inciting hatred against racial or religious groups, she was fined €15,000 for a 2006 letter to Nicolas Sarkozy – then the interior minister, later the president – in which she fumed over Muslims’ slaughter of sheep during Eid ul-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). ‘I’m sick of being led by the nose by this whole population which is… destroying our country by imposing their ways’, she said. Oof. She’d earlier been fined for lamenting the ‘Islamisation’ of France and for calling Muslim migrants ‘invaders’. She went from the coquettish girl of every teen boy’s dreams to a kind of Houellebecqian Miss Havisham. Yet the fining of her for giving voice to her tempestuous views on Islam was as outrageous as the failed efforts to shroud her temptress body. One mob wanted to cloak her devilish flesh, the other to gag her outré utterances. ‘Silence, woman!’, was the cry of both the trad authoritarians of the Fifties and the woke authoritarians of the 2000s. One of the ‘progressive’ outfits that sued Bardot for ‘hate speech’ – the Movement Against Racism – gloated when she was convicted. ‘Islamophobia’, it said, ‘is a crime, not an opinion’. That’s a far more scandalous statement than any uttered by Bardot. It should never be a crime to mock a religion or its adherents. Revolutionary France abolished blasphemy way back in 1791. Modern France has effectively rehabilitated it under the guise of tackling ‘hate’. I’m sure the French revolutionaries in their cravats and pantaloons would have been startled by Bardot’s bike-riding nymphet in And God Created Woman – but they’d have been far more outraged by her later public shaming for blasphemy.

This open letter, supported by 128 organisations from 27 countries and 630 individuals from 26 countries, calls on the Scottish Ministers and MSPs (Members of the Scottish Parliament) to support Ash Regan’s ‘Unbuyable’ Bill, which, if passed, would bring the Nordic Model to Scotland. The letter provides much needed context to the polarisation of opinion on this issue.
It is instructive to understand how Amnesty came to its position of rejecting the Nordic Model and supporting the full decriminalisation of prostitution, including of pimps, brothel keepers and sex buyers. The issue was first raised at the Amnesty UK AGM in Nottingham in 2008, when the Newcastle branch brought a motion calling for full decriminalisation. The motion was the brainchild of Douglas Fox, then a member of the Newcastle branch and founder and business partner of Christony Companions, which at the time was one of the UK’s largest escort agencies. In other words, he was a pimp who had a powerful vested financial interest in the decriminalisation of pimping. He encouraged his sex trade associates to join Amnesty to lobby for the adoption of the policy from within, and he argued for pimps – third parties like himself who profit from other people’s prostitution – to be redefined as ‘managers’ and ‘organisers’ of ‘sex work’ who should therefore be classed as ‘sex workers’. Such mental gymnastics made it possible for Amnesty to claim erroneously that decriminalising pimping was in line with international law, when in fact several international treaties place a binding obligation on ratifying states to fight pimping. This illustrates the power of those with vested interests in the sex trade and how they use all means to lobby for their financial objectives, regardless of the harm they cause to myriad women and girls and to society as a whole, just like the alcohol and asbestos industries did before them.

It’s important to understand, when we talk about the law and policy, and where we want it to be, we don’t even have a good answer to questions like how much prostitution there is in England and Wales and what is its nature and how does it happen? What is its connection to the economy and crime, and everything else? The Government is not trying to understand this. The last study that had a chance of assessing it was done in 2019 and it didn’t answer these questions. And since then, despite all of our awareness of this incredible digital transformation of the so-called industry, we don’t know enough about it in terms of what’s happening and who it’s happening to. We’ve got a policing context and a social context, where there’s not good comprehension of what’s happening in our neighbourhoods. Who does it involve? What kind of support might they need? And that’s a really difficult context to operate in. Personally, I think it suits commissioners at a local level through to national politicians, for it to be out of sight and out of mind. And it is a bit more out of sight than when there was more prostitution on the streets in all of our towns. There’s something important about that, I think, in terms of why it’s not coming onto the policy landscape the way we need it to. A certain amount of indifference.
The question then that I wanted to try and get to is, what is the living consequence of the creep of the ‘sex work’ framing for women who are at risk of, or in, prostitution now? I recognise that for many workers, in particular in public sector settings, the tendency to start using the ‘sex work’ term often comes from a good place. ‘Sex work’ as a term has been presented as neutral, polite, respectful, and in particular sexually non-judgmental. I understand why individual workers might catch the language and believe that they’re being helpful in using it. But the reality when ‘sex work’ is taken on as a term, by people working in health, addictions, housing, and so on, is that you’re signalling that you find the activity morally neutral and not that meaningful. And you’re also closing down a woman’s opportunity to talk about it if she wants to and if in fact she needs to disclose that what is happening to her now or in the past is harmful and there are reasons why she got there. In minimising and neutralising it, we’re cutting off the opportunities, and actually the rights that women should have, to be able to be explicit and clear about the nature of what’s happening to them, how they got there, the real conversations they need to have, and the help that they need to get.

They work endlessly inside private homes where no laws truly reach. When they cry for help, no one hears them. When they collapse from exhaustion, no one records it. When they die, explanations are vague — “natural causes,” “sudden illness,” “unknown reasons.” These women didn’t go to war zones.They went to clean homes, cook meals, and care for families. And yet, many never come back alive.📍 274 Kenyan women — mostly maids and nannies — have died in Saudi Arabia in just five years. Not in factories or construction sites. BUT In kitchens. Bedrooms. Private homes. 📈 At least 55 Kenyan workers died last year alone — double the year before.📍 Autopsies have documented unexplained injuries, yet deaths are routinely dismissed as “natural.”📍 Ugandan women are dying too — but official numbers are not publicly released in fear of public pressure. This is not a PR campaign. This is the dark reality behind the jobs millions of East African women are being sent to do. Recruitment agencies sell opportunity. Arab dissidents were rarely liberal or democratic; indeed, when it came to hating the West, the “seculars” often outdid the Islamists. No one embodied this dark turn better than Alaa Abd El-Fattah, the Egyptian blogger whose recent arrival in Britain so “delighted” Keir Starmer and his government. The 44-year-old El-Fattah — who’d spent the better part of a decade in and out of prison in his home country over his violations of restrictive protest laws — was a leading activist in the Arab Spring. He’s also an inveterate hater of Jews, America, and white people, and has publicly entertained violent fantasies about all three groups. Starmer’s government made it a “top priority” to obtain El-Fattah’s transfer to Britain. The cause célèbre was also pushed by the likes of Judi Dench, Brian Cox, and Joseph Fiennes. El-Fattah had further support, it seems, from a small army of Whitehall bureaucrats, who in 2021 managed to secure a UK passport for him (on the dubious grounds that his grandmother had given birth in Britain decades earlier). I could scarcely imagine that, a little more than a decade later, the odious El-Fattah would be fêted by liberal elites once more, this time in Britain. And on an even grander scale that would include the right to call himself a “Briton”.
This, despite the man’s manifest hatred for his adopted land. He has repeatedly referred to the British as “dogs and monkeys”, for example, and urged Londoners to burn Downing Street. He has “joked” about taking over towns and “rap[ing] ur women” — just the sort of thing British social cohesion needs amid the backlash over migrant hotels and grooming gangs. And he’s called for killing all police, “hating white people”, and the “random shooting of white males”. Much milder rhetoric than El-Fattah’s can get native-born Britons prosecuted and sometimes jailed by their government. That the same government would fight for El-Fattah, and even celebrate him, is intolerable. It renders the reality of two-tier treatment crystal clear.

A huge increase in the use of animals including dogs, Highland cows and even an owl to provide therapy in schools has been recorded, prompting a warning from one of Scotland’s leading experts on educational behaviour. Figures obtained by The Sunday Times show there have been more than 1,500 such visits by “assistance animals” or “therapets” to schools in Scotland in the past two years. The total was spread across the country, with a significant number in Fife, one of Scotland’s largest local authorities. Other visits were recorded in cities including Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as rural areas such as Orkney, Shetland and the Scottish Borders.
While many of the visits were described as being a means to help pupils with reading, a large number were also cited as being used as “therapy assistance” after a large increase in the number of pupils with additional support needs. However, Tom Bennett, a school behaviour adviser and ambassador to the UK Department for Education, sounded a warning over the strategy. He said concerns include a lack of evidence of the potential benefits. It was reported this month that a record number of pupils in Scottish schools, nearly 300,000 or around 43 per cent of the total number of pupils, are now classed as having an ASN.
A former head of Ofsted, the standards office that covers England, claimed this year that schools were becoming “therapeutic institutions” in some cases, encouraging children as young as three to identify negative emotions, which are in fact a normal part of childhood.

Sir Keir was made aware of Mr El-Fattah's social media posts after they circulated online, according to The Telegraph. The Foreign Office released a statement today, saying: 'The Government condemns Mr El-Fattah's historic tweets and considers them to be abhorrent.' The statement was added to one issued earlier that read: 'Mr El-Fattah is a British citizen. 'It has been a long-standing priority under successive governments to work for his release from detention, and to see him reunited with his family in the UK.' The Conservatives have called for the Egyptian-British dissident to be stripped of his UK citizenship and deported. Robert Jenrick, the Tories' justice spokesman, condemned Sir Keir's remarks.
Writing in today's Mail on Sunday, Mr Jenrick said: 'At a time when anti-Semitic incidents are surging, when Jewish communities feel under threat and when policing is under intense pressure, the signal this sends is grotesque.' He added: 'The Prime Minister is no longer a private campaigner or a gun for hire. His words carry weight and represent us all.' Reform leader Nigel Farage said: 'This Government just gets worse. No mention of these violent tweets on the BBC News story either.'
Mr El-Fattah, 44, wrote most the tweets between 2010 and 2011, some of which appear to have been deleted. In one, he said: 'I consider killing any colonialists and especially Zionists heroic, we need to kill more of them.' A teacher in an English school was accused of posing a risk to children and referred to the Government’s counter-terrorism programme after showing Donald Trump videos to his US politics class. The teacher, who is in his 50s, has told The Telegraph he was “likened to a terrorist” after showing the videos, including one of Mr Trump’s inauguration, to A-level students. Henley College, a sixth-form in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, with more than 2,000 students, reported the politics lecturer to the local child safeguarding authority, which concluded a referral to Prevent, the Government’s counter-terrorism programme, was a “priority”.
The teacher was accused of causing his A-level students, aged 17 and 18, “emotional harm”. In one document, seen by The Telegraph, local officials in charge of child protection suggested the showing of the videos could amount to a “hate crime”. The extraordinary claims prompted the teacher, who first qualified in the mid 1990s, to begin a grievance procedure against the college. In a negotiated settlement, it gave him a £2,000 payoff after effectively forcing him to resign from his £44,000-a-year post. His case is the latest uncovered by The Telegraph in which child protection laws have seemingly been used to try to ban adults with alleged Right-wing views from working with children. The Free Speech Union believes the laws, intended to protect children from murderers and rapists, are being wrongly used to go after adults with unfashionable opinions. It said the teacher’s case was a clear example of child safeguarding protocols “being weaponised to silence someone for political reasons”. The teacher, who does not wish to be identified, said: “They likened me to a terrorist. It was completely jarring. It’s dystopian, like something from a George Orwell novel. Documents seen by The Telegraph show how Henley College began its investigations in January 2025 after complaints were made by two of the lecturer’s students. He was accused of “biased” and “off topic” teaching.
The college said in an official email dated Jan 28 that he was alleged “to have shown your students videos of Donald Trump, his campaign, propaganda and other videos which are unrelated to what is being taught”. The college then claimed that one of the videos had “made one of the students feel quite uncomfortable”. The teacher said: “It was just terrifying; just mind-boggling. We were discussing the US election, Trump had just won and I showed a couple of videos from the Trump campaign. Next thing, I was accused of bias. One of the students said they were emotionally disturbed and claimed to have had nightmares.” Asked if he was a far-Right extremist, the teacher, a practising Catholic who admits he is a Republican supporter but is adamant that his views are mainstream, said: “I am not an extremist.” He accused the college of a “complete Left-wing bias”, adding: “They don’t tolerate anything about Donald Trump.” He was teaching the students classes on politics and propaganda, and says he also showed them Kamala Harris videos. He had showed about five Trump-related videos before the complaint was made.
