Two men have been charged after a 'machete brawl' in broad daylight left three people injured. Armed officers raced to Calenick Street in Truro, at around 1.45pm on Monday afternoon, after reports of a 'bladed article' being used during a fight.
One man suffered 'a potentially serious injury', though it is not considered life-threatening or life-changing, Devon and Cornwall Police said. Sinjar Zurel, 27, and Seyin Zurel, 24, both from the Malpas area of Truro, have been charged with two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Sinjar Zurel has also been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a knife blade/sharp pointed article in a public place.

I have to say, I am of two minds myself, this is not PPP either.
Which isn't to say she wasn't in some sort of psychotic episode,
and she seems to have been addled by drugs, too many prescriptions
handed out for a start and nothing else, but I am not comfortable with

Out of this tragedy, some concerning trends have emerged. Online spectators are posting their trial takes as if they’re kids spotting clues in a fictional whodunnit, while others are performing “postpartum tantrums” as if becoming psychotic and killing infants was good fodder for comedy sketches. Everyone has an opinion, and most have personal agendas.
Who does livestreaming this horrific, complex ordeal really benefit? Video coverage of criminal trials is not a requirement. Whether courts should allow it is a live debate. On the one hand, video allows the public to observe justice directly and can expose misleading accounts. On the other hand, cameras change court participants’ behaviour, turning proceedings into entertainment, and can produce misleading reporting that goes viral on social media.
One online “therapist” posting about the Clancy trial shared a 10-minute rant to her 100,000+ TikTok followers, captioned “the prosecution’s lies”. A social worker, she presented herself as an authority, alleging that she worked at a hospital where Clancy once received treatment. But she admitted she didn’t personally treat Clancy, and had stopped working at the hospital before Clancy was ever treated there. Clancy’s lawyer found the viral video and tried to make the woman a defense witness. She was called to court — which garnered media attention — and presented evidence while the jury wasn’t there. Her “evidence” wasn’t material: she was simply “emotional” about the livestreamed trial describing hospital staffing levels in a way that was “not aligned” with her lived “experience”. Judge William Sullivan did not allow her testimony. But she has already benefited from the media attention.

There is, of course, no central tally of people harmed by these machines, but several have been injured or sent to hospital. The victims include a cyclist in New Jersey who broke his collarbone after being taken out by an Avride robot, and a pedestrian in Arizona who was knocked over and then injured again by the robot, she alleges, when she was on the ground.
In purely physical terms, the robots are formidable. A laden weight of over 50kg and a top speed of 10mph make larger examples quite frightening. Smaller, slower units have also been trialed, many limited to 4mph when they detect pedestrians, but even the more diminutive models have been filmed bothering people’s ankles, diving beneath the wheels of passing cars, and generally getting in the way. Humans are expected to dodge these machines when they plot uncompromising routes through crowds, sidestep them when they halt, or yank pets out of the way if the vehicles’ on-board AI hasn’t learned to detect a Yorkshire terrier. And when a robot pulls up at a pedestrian-controlled crossing, or otherwise gets stuck, its operator hopes that you will step in to assist.
To date, the pavement delivery drone experiment is going as badly as you’d expect, with predictable resistance from its unwilling, unconsenting human participants. But the scheme operators have turned to one of the oldest tricks in the consumer robotics playbook to mitigate public anger: cuteness. Almost all pavement delivery vehicles have smiley faces, exaggeratedly large anime-style eyes for headlamps, and affectedly unthreatening styling that resembles a child’s toy. Many have electronic voices capable of synthetic obsequiousness, humanoid nicknames emblazoned on their flanks, or large dot matrix screens on their fronts that can “emote” with basic expressions. Once the robot, called something like Cuthbert, has crashed into you, it can change its digital face to a sad one before whirring off with its cargo of bubble tea. This reflects the unlovably cutesy approach to accountability shared by most of the big operators of delivery drones. Following one of the Chicago bus shelter crashes, the startup Serve Robotics ran a local advertisement campaign that featured an anthropomorphic delivery robot displaying the self-deprecating message “Nasir is sorry” and “I took ‘breaking into the market’ too literally”. Corporate statements immediately following crashes are stiffly unrepentant and almost always downplay the severity of whatever went wrong.

This leaves many in the community with a sense of a theft of agency; a self-evident reality that “our” environment – our dùthchas as the Gaelic calls heritage in the land – is no longer “ours”, but is being progressively appropriated as “theirs”. Some dispute the application of the term humane. But, unless we are vegans, how do we think that our meat, fish and eggs are produced? To liken the guga hunt to bull fighting, fox hunting or pheasant shooting is a false equivalence. The hunt is not for “sport”. It “entertains” no spectators. What, then, renders it a matter of culture, tradition and heritage?
At the core lies a principle that thinkers on culture and development call “the implicit meaning of local practices”. It’s how, when you unpack embedded local customs, you’ll often find far more than meets the eye, joined up like mycelia in implicit networks that sustain a community’s social cohesion. Like the body, communities too have immune systems that implicitly protect integrity. For example, islanders of my generation remember the 1966 seamen’s strike that ran for six weeks. Whereas country areas were OK, some townsfolk were hard-pressed for basic supplies. That memory stands us in good stead given that the isles today sit at the end of just-in-time global supply chains. Being mindful of this at the time of Covid, crofters in Lewis talked among each other as to what they might fall back should food shortages have occurred. Had push come to shove, they would have summoned up traditional ecological knowledge. That’s what such as the guga hunt embeds in the cultural immune system. It’s an implicit meaning of a local practice. Moreover, like other indigenous peoples, islanders worry at the impacts of modernity upon the young. As a time-served deck hand on the CalMac ferries put it to me last week: “They’re not on the job, they’re just on their phones, and don’t have the same initiative.”
Murray ends his book with a striking poem. He foresees a time at the Old Cemetery in Ness when the graves will open. The dead will rise and walk, and they will see what it is that we “have no longer held in safe-keeping”. They will find “that bog has choked both drain and furrow”, and they will be astonished at such “weak and feckless offspring who let slip / rich legacies once granted by these shades”..........................................

Children are being paid to take part in an NHS puberty blocker trial, The Telegraph can reveal. Some 226 children who believe they are transgender will be given puberty blockers as part of an investigation commissioned by Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, into their effects on the young. The drugs, which stop the body’s natural development, were indefinitely banned by the Health Secretary after the Commission on Human Medicines said they posed “an unacceptable safety risk” to children. A trial into their side effects, which is set to start in April, was recommended by the Cass review. However, it has faced criticism, including concerns about the ethics of giving children a drug that could cause irreversible harm, including to their brains and fertility.
It can now be revealed that the children taking part in the trial will be incentivised with the promise of up to £500 in vouchers for completing psychometric tests. Participants, aged under 16, will receive £30 vouchers for each of the 15 cognitive assessments they complete, as well as £15 vouchers for each of the three MRI scans they undertake, over the two years of the trial. Children in another arm of the trial, not taking the drugs, will be given £15 vouchers for each bone density scan and blood test they have. It is understood the children will be given Love2Shop vouchers which can be redeemed at retailers including Currys and John Lewis, as well as Uber Eats and Xbox, among others. Claire Coutinho, the shadow equalities minister, said: “These children are in a vulnerable position. Adults should not be giving them vouchers in return for being experimented on. “This trial already risks putting healthy children on a medical pathway to lifelong infertility. There is no minimum age, and it has been confirmed that children who are autistic or have learning difficulties will be able to take part.

It suggests that requiring spoken consent is, for some faiths, “an imposition” that conflicts with established practice. Its answer is to redefine consent itself. Rather than insisting that both parties verbally agree to the marriage, the Government proposes that consent may instead be expressed “through actions”, so long as the officiant and witnesses “share an understanding” of what those actions mean. The Family Education Trust highlights these and other flaws. A briefing from the charity explains a Muslim girl whose marriage has been arranged by her family could, in principle, remain veiled and silent throughout a ceremony held in her family home, yet leave it legally married because the officiant and witnesses interpreted her gestures as consent.
The Government itself accepts that allowing weddings in private homes “could make it harder to identify forced, predatory, sham marriages or wider abuse”.
The consultation acknowledges that six in ten women married in Islamic ceremonies in Britain have no legal marriage at all. When those relationships collapse, it is overwhelmingly women who discover they have no matrimonial rights, no financial remedies and none of the legal protections marriage is supposed to confer. In fact, it’s even worse. The self-styled righteous of the West haven’t only turned a blind eye to the Islamist pox – they’ve inflamed it. They smashed free discussion of Islamism, which further emboldened this most rank ideology. They demonised its critics as racists, making them fair game for the hatred and even violence of Islamist ideologues. And since 7 October 2023 they’ve marched shoulder to shoulder with Islamists who openly chanted for the return of the Army of Muhammad to finish off the Jews, and the rest of us too. Will the self-hating freaks of ‘Queers for Palestine’ wake up now? Will they recognise that they’ve thrown their lot in with religious extremists who would happily put them to death for their sins of the flesh? The signs are not good. At Berlin Pride itself there were Palestine flags. At Trans Pride in London on Saturday, a shirtless Sarah Jane Baker, the ex-con trans activist, took to the stage with the words ‘Free Gaza’ scrawled in red under his gross moobs. If that useless lump were ever to set foot in Gaza, he’d have new pronouns: ‘was / were’.................................................................

One would think, after the colossal failure of iPads in schools, we would learn that children deserve evidence-based education, not expensive digital experiments. Yet the lure of educational technology with its glitzy marketing campaigns remains big business, estimated to be worth £106 billion globally by 2034. It has now inspired what has been billed as London’s first ever “AI-enabled primary school”, due to open in the capital next year. Other schools have, of course, adopted the use of AI in some areas, but Inspired Edge has a specific plan to integrate widespread use of the technology into the classroom. Rather than using AI to teach pupils directly, it will use AI software to help students learn at their own pace, while being able to “diagnose misconceptions, provide practice” and allow parents to access a “24/7 dashboard to see their child’s learning in real time”.
However, there are clear problems with this approach. At the risk of sounding like a Luddite, there is simply no need for AI in primary education. Not only is there little evidence that it will actually improve education, but there is also reason to believe that it undercuts how children learn and think independently. The idea of seven-year-olds learning the three Rs in some strange simulacrum of PC World is vaguely terrifying. The data on technology improving test scores is already weak — although British schools now spend an eye-watering £900 million on it a year — but for the primary curriculum it is non-existent. What we do know is that younger students, and those with lower levels of education generally, appear to be most vulnerable to the negative effects of AI on learning, suggesting that it may diminish users’ capacity for deep reflective thinking, promote cognitive laziness, and weaken problem-solving abilities. So it seems ridiculous to allow primary school students, with all their delicate neuroplasticity, access to software and screens that shift the focus from understanding to mere completion, which undermines the depth and richness of learning.

Nobody expects the police to have all the answers within a day or two of a murder (although it’s obviously nice if they do). Had they simply said that they had an open mind as to motive, nobody would have thought any less of them for it. Instead Matt Longman, an assistant chief constable at Devon and Cornwall Police, went out of his way to say that there was “nothing to suggest it was politically motivated” — only for the case to be handed over to counter-terrorism officers less than 24 hours later. (Naturally, the people using it to call for yet another clampdown on social media — apparently our political class’s one and only reaction to a confirmed or possible assassination — don’t seem to think that this statement applies to them. But using an event to call for policy action is politicising that event; the Snowdrop campaign to ban handguns politicised Dunblane. That isn’t a problem unless you think that “politicising” something is inherently bad and thus only something your opponents do.)

If you have to insist your plans are not about suppressing free speech or censoring political debate, they probably are. Lucy Powell, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and a close ally of Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham, wants to use the Representation of the People Bill to impose legal duties on online platforms similar to the impartiality rules that apply to broadcasters.
Powell argues that, in an age when most people get their news from social media, users should have access to reliable sources so they can make informed decisions at the ballot box. How convenient, then, that the Government is also proposing to require social media companies to prioritise what it considers to be "trustworthy" news sources. The Free Speech Union has already identified the Representation of the People Bill as legislation of significant concern. Taken together, these proposals raise important questions about the future regulation of online political debate.

Chris Hopson, one of the highest paid officials in the NHS, pushed it from the top. There's also a guide circulating that tells staff converting to Islam is "the best decision you'll ever make." Nobody voted on this. Nobody asked the nurses and doctors if they wanted to skip water and food during a shift to prove a point. This isn't about respecting Ramadan. Muslims deserve that respect already, easily, without anyone else having to fast. This is a public health system telling employees how to practice religion. Ask yourself who signed off on this and why they thought it was their call to make.

⚠️Bulgarian Man Guilty Of Assaulting 12YO Girl In Dundee
Ilia Belov, 22, has been found guilty of assaulting a 12YO girl and acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards four girls aged 12-14. The court heard Belov made sexual remarks to the girl and pushed the 12YO, hit her head.
Belov claimed he was acting in self defence after seeing a knife, and denied making sexual comments. Sheriff Timothy Niven-Smith rejected his evidence as "wholly unconvincing and self-serving," calling it a "revisionist" excuse.
The sheriff accepted the girls’ accounts, supported by CCTV and other witnesses, and said Belov’s remarks triggered the confrontation. Bulova's sister, Nadjedzha Belova, had already pleaded guilty to the assault on the 13YO girl.
⚖️Sentencing for both is set for 5th August.
🌍The case went viral last year after footage of the girl holding a knife and axe circulated widely. Several high-profile commentators claimed the girls were lying and were the aggressors, some called it racist far-right propaganda.

Some victims described being separated from friends or husbands, and “pushed inside ‘hell circles’ of young migrant men.” The men “groped women and girls, no matter their age, appearance or circumstances, grabbing their breasts and between their legs. One woman described several men trying to insert their fingers into her vagina.” Some assaults went on for upwards of thirty minutes.
That night in Cologne calls to mind the horrific “rape game” (taharrush gamea, in Arabic), known in North Africa. It’s a practice made infamous, Hirsi Ali notes, by the ordeal that Lara Logan, a CBS journalist, experienced in Cairo’s thronged Tahrir Square. Covering the so-called Arab Spring protests in 2011, she was separated from her camera crew, swarmed by a gang of men who tore her clothes off, and violently raped her with “sticks, flag poles, hands — at a certain point I lost track,” for at least twenty minutes. In Cologne, 661 women “reported being victims of sexual attacks that night.” One of the major claims of Hirsi Ali’s book is that there’s a more-than-anecdotal relationship between a rise in sexual violence against women in Europe and the influx of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries, particularly since the mid-2010s.

The interviewer tried again, putting it to Mr Swinney that it was "as clear as day that you can't put a person with a penis in a women's prison". The First Minister responded: "But when you look at the Supreme Court judgment what they said was that nothing that we do – and we as a government have to always obey the law – can in any way undermine the rights that are assured to individuals who are transgender individuals." Asked if he was "dragging his feet", Mr Swinney denied this by saying "in various other areas we have changed the regulations and the guidance that are in place". On Tuesday Ms Melle will be called before a disciplinary hearing, accused of breaching patient confidentiality by speaking to the media, an allegation she denies. In 2023-24 there were 234 transgender inmates in the prison estate in England and Wales, the majority of whom were biologically male. More than 70 per cent are serving sentences for sex offences and violent crimes. In a last-minute attempt to save Ms Melle’s job, Claire Coutinho, the shadow equalities minister, has started a petition urging the trust to drop the disciplinary action. The disciplinary processes these women are being put through are interminable. They are more akin to the struggle sessions seen under Chairman Mao. The process is the punishment, which provokes fear and instils control. Why ask for your right to single-sex spaces to be upheld if the consequence could be losing your income, your profession and your reputation? Biological sex is real. That is not ‘stoking a culture war’ or a matter of opinion. It is a legal and biological fact. The victories of the Darlington Nurses and Sandie Peggie should serve as a warning to NHS Trusts who continue to waste taxpayers’ money on spurious disciplinary investigations into women who just want to protect their legal rights and beliefs which are protected under the law.

A man has been jailed for possessing a bomb-making video which explained how to make explosives similar to those previously used in UK terror attacks.
Adam Mahmood asked a TikTok user to send him the instructional video, which prosecutors described as a "detailed guide" on producing an explosive substance with a detonator and shrapnel.
The 20-year-old denied a charge of possessing a recording likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism but he was found guilty after a trial in September.
At Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, Mahmood, of Platt Brook Way in Sheldon, Birmingham, was sentenced to four years in a young offender institution.
Judge Simon Drew KC said Mahmood would serve an extended period of three years on licence after his custodial sentence expired "in order to protect the public in the future".

A judge has sparked fury in Italy after downgrading sexual assault charges for a migrant who impregnated a 10-year-old girl at a migrant centre. There was outrage in 2024 when it was reported that the child, from sub-Saharan Africa, had been raped at a reception centre in Collio, Lombardy. The young victim was taken to a local hospital, where a test revealed that she was pregnant before she underwent an abortion. In depositions, the 29-year-old Bangladeshi defendant claimed that he and the girl had shared some form of 'relationship' while his legal team insisted 'there was no violence'.
An Italian judge has now handed him a five-year sentence, having reclassified charges against him from 'aggravated sexual assault against a minor' to 'sexual acts with a child', according to Corriere della Sera. The ruling also followed a fast-track trial which allowed the sentence to be reduced by one-third. The decision has enraged politicians, with League (Lega) MP Simona Bordonali demanding a change to the law. 'The mere five-year sentence handed down to a person responsible for the atrocious and unspeakable violence against a child leaves me stunned,' she said.
