I have to say, I am of two minds myself, this is not PPP either.
Which isn't to say she wasn't in some sort of psychotic episode,
and she seems to have been addled by drugs, too many prescriptions

Online spectators are posting their trial takes as if they’re kids spotting clues in a fictional whodunnit, while others are performing “postpartum tantrums” as if becoming psychotic and killing infants was good fodder for comedy sketches. Everyone has an opinion, and most have personal agendas.
Who does livestreaming this horrific, complex ordeal really benefit? Video coverage of criminal trials is not a requirement. Whether courts should allow it is a live debate. On the one hand, video allows the public to observe justice directly and can expose misleading accounts. On the other hand, cameras change court participants’ behaviour, turning proceedings into entertainment, and can produce misleading reporting that goes viral on social media.
One online “therapist” posting about the Clancy trial shared a 10-minute rant to her 100,000+ TikTok followers, captioned “the prosecution’s lies”. A social worker, she presented herself as an authority, alleging that she worked at a hospital where Clancy once received treatment. But she admitted she didn’t personally treat Clancy, and had stopped working at the hospital before Clancy was ever treated there. Clancy’s lawyer found the viral video and tried to make the woman a defense witness. She was called to court — which garnered media attention — and presented evidence while the jury wasn’t there. Her “evidence” wasn’t material: she was simply “emotional” about the livestreamed trial describing hospital staffing levels in a way that was “not aligned” with her lived “experience”. Judge William Sullivan did not allow her testimony. But she has already benefited from the media attention.

There is, of course, no central tally of people harmed by these machines, but several have been injured or sent to hospital. The victims include a cyclist in New Jersey who broke his collarbone after being taken out by an Avride robot, and a pedestrian in Arizona who was knocked over and then injured again by the robot, she alleges, when she was on the ground.
In purely physical terms, the robots are formidable. A laden weight of over 50kg and a top speed of 10mph make larger examples quite frightening. Smaller, slower units have also been trialed, many limited to 4mph when they detect pedestrians, but even the more diminutive models have been filmed bothering people’s ankles, diving beneath the wheels of passing cars, and generally getting in the way. Humans are expected to dodge these machines when they plot uncompromising routes through crowds, sidestep them when they halt, or yank pets out of the way if the vehicles’ on-board AI hasn’t learned to detect a Yorkshire terrier. And when a robot pulls up at a pedestrian-controlled crossing, or otherwise gets stuck, its operator hopes that you will step in to assist.
To date, the pavement delivery drone experiment is going as badly as you’d expect, with predictable resistance from its unwilling, unconsenting human participants. But the scheme operators have turned to one of the oldest tricks in the consumer robotics playbook to mitigate public anger: cuteness. Almost all pavement delivery vehicles have smiley faces, exaggeratedly large anime-style eyes for headlamps, and affectedly unthreatening styling that resembles a child’s toy. Many have electronic voices capable of synthetic obsequiousness, humanoid nicknames emblazoned on their flanks, or large dot matrix screens on their fronts that can “emote” with basic expressions. Once the robot, called something like Cuthbert, has crashed into you, it can change its digital face to a sad one before whirring off with its cargo of bubble tea. This reflects the unlovably cutesy approach to accountability shared by most of the big operators of delivery drones. Following one of the Chicago bus shelter crashes, the startup Serve Robotics ran a local advertisement campaign that featured an anthropomorphic delivery robot displaying the self-deprecating message “Nasir is sorry” and “I took ‘breaking into the market’ too literally”. Corporate statements immediately following crashes are stiffly unrepentant and almost always downplay the severity of whatever went wrong.

This leaves many in the community with a sense of a theft of agency; a self-evident reality that “our” environment – our dùthchas as the Gaelic calls heritage in the land – is no longer “ours”, but is being progressively appropriated as “theirs”. Some dispute the application of the term humane. But, unless we are vegans, how do we think that our meat, fish and eggs are produced? To liken the guga hunt to bull fighting, fox hunting or pheasant shooting is a false equivalence. The hunt is not for “sport”. It “entertains” no spectators. What, then, renders it a matter of culture, tradition and heritage?
At the core lies a principle that thinkers on culture and development call “the implicit meaning of local practices”. It’s how, when you unpack embedded local customs, you’ll often find far more than meets the eye, joined up like mycelia in implicit networks that sustain a community’s social cohesion. Like the body, communities too have immune systems that implicitly protect integrity. For example, islanders of my generation remember the 1966 seamen’s strike that ran for six weeks. Whereas country areas were OK, some townsfolk were hard-pressed for basic supplies. That memory stands us in good stead given that the isles today sit at the end of just-in-time global supply chains. Being mindful of this at the time of Covid, crofters in Lewis talked among each other as to what they might fall back should food shortages have occurred. Had push come to shove, they would have summoned up traditional ecological knowledge. That’s what such as the guga hunt embeds in the cultural immune system. It’s an implicit meaning of a local practice. Moreover, like other indigenous peoples, islanders worry at the impacts of modernity upon the young. As a time-served deck hand on the CalMac ferries put it to me last week: “They’re not on the job, they’re just on their phones, and don’t have the same initiative.”
Murray ends his book with a striking poem. He foresees a time at the Old Cemetery in Ness when the graves will open. The dead will rise and walk, and they will see what it is that we “have no longer held in safe-keeping”. They will find “that bog has choked both drain and furrow”, and they will be astonished at such “weak and feckless offspring who let slip / rich legacies once granted by these shades”..........................................

Children are being paid to take part in an NHS puberty blocker trial, The Telegraph can reveal. Some 226 children who believe they are transgender will be given puberty blockers as part of an investigation commissioned by Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, into their effects on the young. The drugs, which stop the body’s natural development, were indefinitely banned by the Health Secretary after the Commission on Human Medicines said they posed “an unacceptable safety risk” to children. A trial into their side effects, which is set to start in April, was recommended by the Cass review. However, it has faced criticism, including concerns about the ethics of giving children a drug that could cause irreversible harm, including to their brains and fertility.
It can now be revealed that the children taking part in the trial will be incentivised with the promise of up to £500 in vouchers for completing psychometric tests. Participants, aged under 16, will receive £30 vouchers for each of the 15 cognitive assessments they complete, as well as £15 vouchers for each of the three MRI scans they undertake, over the two years of the trial. Children in another arm of the trial, not taking the drugs, will be given £15 vouchers for each bone density scan and blood test they have. It is understood the children will be given Love2Shop vouchers which can be redeemed at retailers including Currys and John Lewis, as well as Uber Eats and Xbox, among others. Claire Coutinho, the shadow equalities minister, said: “These children are in a vulnerable position. Adults should not be giving them vouchers in return for being experimented on. “This trial already risks putting healthy children on a medical pathway to lifelong infertility. There is no minimum age, and it has been confirmed that children who are autistic or have learning difficulties will be able to take part.

One would think, after the colossal failure of iPads in schools, we would learn that children deserve evidence-based education, not expensive digital experiments. Yet the lure of educational technology with its glitzy marketing campaigns remains big business, estimated to be worth £106 billion globally by 2034. It has now inspired what has been billed as London’s first ever “AI-enabled primary school”, due to open in the capital next year. Other schools have, of course, adopted the use of AI in some areas, but Inspired Edge has a specific plan to integrate widespread use of the technology into the classroom. Rather than using AI to teach pupils directly, it will use AI software to help students learn at their own pace, while being able to “diagnose misconceptions, provide practice” and allow parents to access a “24/7 dashboard to see their child’s learning in real time”.
However, there are clear problems with this approach. At the risk of sounding like a Luddite, there is simply no need for AI in primary education. Not only is there little evidence that it will actually improve education, but there is also reason to believe that it undercuts how children learn and think independently. The idea of seven-year-olds learning the three Rs in some strange simulacrum of PC World is vaguely terrifying. The data on technology improving test scores is already weak — although British schools now spend an eye-watering £900 million on it a year — but for the primary curriculum it is non-existent. What we do know is that younger students, and those with lower levels of education generally, appear to be most vulnerable to the negative effects of AI on learning, suggesting that it may diminish users’ capacity for deep reflective thinking, promote cognitive laziness, and weaken problem-solving abilities. So it seems ridiculous to allow primary school students, with all their delicate neuroplasticity, access to software and screens that shift the focus from understanding to mere completion, which undermines the depth and richness of learning.

Instead Matt Longman, an assistant chief constable at Devon and Cornwall Police, went out of his way to say that there was “nothing to suggest it was politically motivated” — only for the case to be handed over to counter-terrorism officers less than 24 hours later. (Naturally, the people using it to call for yet another clampdown on social media — apparently our political class’s one and only reaction to a confirmed or possible assassination — don’t seem to think that this statement applies to them. But using an event to call for policy action is politicising that event; the Snowdrop campaign to ban handguns politicised Dunblane. There were nearly 200 cases where boys aged 12 to 15 years-old were charged with rape, attempted rape and sexual assault by penetration in Scotland in the space of just three years. The youths were all dealt with jointly by the Scottish Children's Reporter Administration (SCRA) and the Procurator Fiscal, with the majority ending up before a children's hearing. It is thought that the majority of the young rapists escaped detention. A report from the SCRA contained a case study about a 14-year-old double rapist whose two victims were both 14-year-old girls. Despite being convicted in an adult court, he escaped detention and was instead given a community sentence including a 7pm-7am curfew. However, when the Scottish Daily Express contacted the SCRA to ask about this alarming example of soft-touch justice, the organisation said the original report had failed to mention the case study was a "real world example" based on "composites of actual cases".
This does not alter the fact that 182 charges "related to rape, attempted rape and sexual assault by penetration" involving boys aged 12 to 15 were recorded from April 2021-March 2024. An SCRA source said the case study involving 'Ross' was "meant to highlight the interplay of the social educational elements of the Hearings System and the risk management approach that can be used with children who have caused serious sexual harm; even if that might not always sit comfortably with wider narratives around punishment".
Critics noted that despite a lengthy description of how 'Ross' was able to return to school and get on with extra-curricular activities, there were no details about the young victims of this "composite" rapist. The case study – based on more than one actual rape case – said 'Ross' was given a Compulsory Supervision Order (CSO) with a movement restriction placing him "on a 'nighttime' curfew meaning that he had to remain within his home between 7pm and 7am". It comes after two boys in England – who were aged 14 at the time of their crimes – were sentenced to four years in detention for the gang rape of two girls. They were initially spared jail along with a third youth and handed three-year community rehabilitation orders, sparking a national outcry and a review. Earlier this month, Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr told the teenagers: "We have decided that we do need to change your sentences and both of you do need to go into detention. What you both did was so bad that we decided we had no other choice but to make these sentences."

If you have to insist your plans are not about suppressing free speech or censoring political debate, they probably are. Lucy Powell, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and a close ally of Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham, wants to use the Representation of the People Bill to impose legal duties on online platforms similar to the impartiality rules that apply to broadcasters.
Powell argues that, in an age when most people get their news from social media, users should have access to reliable sources so they can make informed decisions at the ballot box. How convenient, then, that the Government is also proposing to require social media companies to prioritise what it considers to be "trustworthy" news sources. The Free Speech Union has already identified the Representation of the People Bill as legislation of significant concern. Taken together, these proposals raise important questions about the future regulation of online political debate.

There is another possibility that I find myself increasingly considering, and it is one that should concern anyone who cares about equal treatment under the law. Have the police, in some circumstances, simply concluded that enforcing the same standards everywhere, against everyone, is too difficult, too resource intensive or too politically sensitive, and that it is therefore easier to restrict those who are willing to cooperate than those who may not be? From the perspective of those subjected to these restrictions, it can sometimes feel as though policing has become an exercise in managing the compliant rather than confronting the disruptive. The organisers who engage with police, follow instructions and obey the law find themselves moved, restricted and regulated, while those threatening disorder acquire influence simply through their willingness to create problems. Many members of the public will look at situations such as this and conclude that certain communities or activist groups are treated with a degree of caution or accommodation that would not be extended elsewhere, not because police officers agree with them, but because confronting them and policing them robustly is judged to be too difficult, too costly or too likely to create further problems. Whether that perception is fair or unfair, it exists. It also raises an uncomfortable question that police leaders should perhaps be willing to answer openly: are the police still controlling the streets, or are they increasingly managing public order according to which groups are easiest to police and which groups are most likely to create difficulties if challenged? After several years of experiences like this, I have reached an uncomfortable conclusion. I increasingly believe that many police officers approach these events having already decided who the aggressors are before the first officer arrives on scene. Women speaking publicly about the erosion of their rights are viewed as provocative, while those seeking to silence them are viewed as reacting to provocation rather than creating it. Once you begin from that assumption, every decision that follows becomes easy to justify.
Move the women. Restrict the women. Manage the women. The protesters can largely look after themselves. The day after this event I experienced something that was neither hypothetical nor speculative. A man approached me and asked whether I intended to continue “talking shit about Islam”. When I replied that I did, he told me, “I’m going to cut your throat.” The exchange was captured on video. If charges follow, he will become the fourth man charged with offences against me in the United Kingdom in the last three years because of my public campaigning. That is one of the reasons I find this approach so difficult to understand. Time and again it feels as though the authorities are more concerned with managing, or not managing, the reaction to women speaking than with protecting the women who are speaking. Genuine threats against women who speak publicly seem to be regarded as an unfortunate occupational hazard, while the women themselves are treated as the public order problem. I am also troubled by reports of Metropolitan Police LGBT training sessions in which my name was mentioned and officers were allegedly encouraged to boo and hiss. If true, that should concern every Londoner, regardless of whether they agree with me or disagree with me. Police officers are entitled to hold political opinions like everybody else. They are not entitled to allow those opinions to influence the policing of lawful speech and assembly.
Impartiality matters most when police disagree with the people they are policing. Which brings me to my final question: is Tower Hamlets a place where women can safely gather and speak in public? Because I intend to return. I intend to speak in Tower Hamlets again, and I intend to do so somewhere that people can hear us. Perhaps on the steps of the Town Hall itself. Perhaps somewhere else in the borough. The location matters less than the principle. Will the Metropolitan Police facilitate lawful speech or facilitate its suppression? Will women once again be moved out of sight for the sake of “community tensions”? Will restrictions once again fall primarily upon those wishing to speak rather than those wishing to silence them? Or will the police defend the principle that unpopular speech deserves the same protection as popular speech? Because if parts of London have become places where women may speak only with official permission, under official supervision and in officially approved locations, then perhaps we should at least have the honesty to say so.
Women should not require police permission to speak.
Nor should they be treated as a public order problem simply because others object to hearing them.

Dear Commander Smart: Is Tower Hamlets a Place Where Women Are Allowed to Speak?
For the last few years I have travelled around Britain organising events where women gather in public to speak about women’s rights, safeguarding, freedom of speech and the reality that sex matters. (I’ve actually travelled around the world and witnessed policing in places as far as Auckland and Rio de Janeiro.) They are not riots, they are not threats to public order and they are not designed to intimidate anybody. They are simply women speaking in public about matters that affect women and girls. Yet increasingly I have come to the conclusion that, in the eyes of parts of British policing, women speaking publicly is itself treated as the problem. When we sought to hold an event in Whitechapel, we wanted to do what free speech campaigners have always done: gather somewhere visible, somewhere accessible and somewhere that ordinary members of the public might hear us and engage with what we had to say. Whitechapel was not chosen by accident. Part of the reason we chose it was because we know that there are parts of Britain where certain opinions cannot be expressed or where certain groups of people should quietly avoid speaking in public and we are told these places do not exist. We are constantly told that Britain has no no-go areas, that the rule of law applies equally everywhere and that everyone enjoys the same rights and freedoms regardless of which street they happen to be standing on.
We wanted to test whether that was true. Instead we were informed that, for the sake of “community tensions”, we would have to hold our event in a park some distance away from where we had intended. Public speech hidden away from the public rather defeats the object.
We were further informed that if we entered Whitechapel to hold our event as planned we risked arrest for breaching the conditions imposed upon us. The practical message appeared to be that women were free to speak, provided we did so somewhere else. In this case, a park far far away. We were informed that Stand Up To Racism intended to protest the event and that approximately 500 demonstrators were expected to attend. We also told that Tower Hamlets Council had informed the Metropolitan Police that as many as 20,000 protesters could arrive in opposition to women gathering to speak publicly.
Twenty thousand.
If those figures influenced operational decisions then I think the public deserves answers. Did these estimates contribute to the decision to move us from our chosen location? Did they contribute to the Section 14 conditions imposed upon our event? What intelligence supported those predictions and, now that the event has passed, does anybody seriously believe they reflected reality? Because if public authorities can justify restrictions on unpopular speech simply by predicting enough opposition to it, then freedom of expression exists only at the pleasure of whichever group can threaten the largest protest. That is not democracy. It is the heckler’s veto with official paperwork attached to it.
The consequence of this approach was that the women wishing to exercise their lawful right to speak found themselves restricted as to where they could stand and when they could assemble, while those seeking to stop us speaking appeared to face no equivalent restrictions at all. We cooperated fully with the police and complied with the conditions placed upon us, yet protesters were still able to approach closely enough to scream through speeches and attempt to drown out women’s voices. Had some of the women present not stood their ground, our event would simply have been shouted down. I find myself wondering what lesson the Metropolitan Police intended women to take from this experience. That we may speak, but only where we are told. That we may speak, but only if enough people do not object. That women discussing safeguarding and women’s rights are to be managed, while those threatening disruption are simply an unfortunate reality that everyone else must accommodate.

⚠️Bulgarian Man Guilty Of Assaulting 12YO Girl In Dundee
Ilia Belov, 22, has been found guilty of assaulting a 12YO girl and acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards four girls aged 12-14. The court heard Belov made sexual remarks to the girl and pushed the 12YO, hit her head.
Belov claimed he was acting in self defence after seeing a knife, and denied making sexual comments. Sheriff Timothy Niven-Smith rejected his evidence as "wholly unconvincing and self-serving," calling it a "revisionist" excuse.
The sheriff accepted the girls’ accounts, supported by CCTV and other witnesses, and said Belov’s remarks triggered the confrontation. Bulova's sister, Nadjedzha Belova, had already pleaded guilty to the assault on the 13YO girl.
⚖️Sentencing for both is set for 5th August.

The next day, Mrs. B was urgently taken to the emergency department of her local hospital where she was deemed stable, but "her spouse was noted to be experiencing caregiver burnout". Her palliative care doctor submitted a referral for in-patient palliative care or hospice care due to her husband's burnout, but the request was rejected "for not meeting hospice criteria for end-of-life". On the same day, her spouse requested an expedited second MAiD evaluation, and another assessor conducted the review that evening, determining Mrs B qualified for MAiD. When the initial assessor learned of this development, they voiced strong objections and raised red flags. The report states: "This MAiD practitioner expressed concerns regarding the necessity for 'urgency' and shared belief for the need for more comprehensive evaluation, the seemingly drastic change in perspective of end-of-life goals, and the possibility of coercion or undue influence i.e due to caregiver burnout." The first practitioner sought to visit Mrs B the following day for a fresh evaluation, but the MAiD provider rejected this request "due to their clinical opinion that the clinical circumstances necessitated an urgent provision". A third assessor was then enlisted to perform a "virtual assessment" and concurred with the second assessor's conclusion that Mrs B met MAiD eligibility criteria. Mrs B received euthanasia that same evening. In Cologne, 661 women “reported being victims of sexual attacks that night.” One of the major claims of Hirsi Ali’s book is that there’s a more-than-anecdotal relationship between a rise in sexual violence against women in Europe and the influx of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries, particularly since the mid-2010s.
