Please can you fix the bug where people cant follow their first person. It's the biggest complaint I hear over and over about primal. What we do now is send people over to nostrudel, then tell them to come back to primal. Even that sometimes fails. Its so hard for new users when the client doesnt let them follow anyone, without giving any reason why.

With over 100 millions users already, and expanding more every day, Bitcoin's taproot identity (which powers nostr), with schnorr signatures, is spreading rapidlly. It also has the possibility to be further integrated into web standards. That would mean bitcoin and taproot have a chance to become the native payment infrastructure of the web. If we dont mess it up! Hopefully one step in the right direction is allowing single sign on, to any website, with Taproot Identity and Schnorr:

Did you know that nostr identities can themselves create new identites? This is part of the magic of ECC cryptography.
For example: if you add the current created_at timestamp to your identity keys (public and private) then you can have a new identity, that only you can control, for every second of your life.
Not sure how that is useful. But Im thinking about allowing users to have multiple characters in a game. Bitcoin's Taproot technology (which powers nostr) allows a lot of possibilities and outlets for creative solutions.

Peter Todd's right. Nostr has become more centralized and isn't as censorship-resistant as people claim. The neglect of the relay network is part of it, with most relay operators dropping off. A few remain, but it’s barely holding on. This was kind of clear from the start—Nostr is just a subset of HTTP, so anything Nostr can do, HTTP can too, and actually more with storage and real-time capabilities. How decentralized either is depends on how they’re used. Nostr's centralization, like HTTP's, was always possible, and the article’s author had a big hand in that. Still useful, just not as advertised.

Hmm, not sure about this. Restricting profiles could make it harder for new users and might even create a FOMO effect for bad actors. A spam assassin-style approach seems better as a baseline. I use Ditto regularly to make 'good' profiles, and if that gets blocked, newer versions will be trickier for me to use.

Good news! Spoke to some of the team on the solid project. About the idea of NIP-98 style login (http-schnorr-auth) to solid. They were quite receptive to the idea, and suggested a couple of sensible changes. And we already have keyparis and schnorr signatures built into solid. Every nostr will be able to have blazingly fast storage and apps, and solid users will benefit from the open source eco system and tooling already built. That means one step closer to nostr interoperating with Solid and the rest of the web.

Nostr is a step towards the finished version of the web, bringing it back to its decentralized roots. Nostr is not that new (taproot aside) pretty much everything that is done on nostr could have been done 10 years before. What's new is that people want it and have noticed it.
But nostr is not the finished version of the web. The finished version of the web will include nostr, and what exists today, but also have some key features:
- innovation will be 100% permissionles. No need to go to the NIPs, a new project will be as simple as starting a website
- massively scalable full data model, that includes text strings (nostr) and JSON (developer favourite) with powerful databases
- native paytments though lightning, zaps, and on chain, including all layer 2 and uxto solutions
- sub 100ms response and paint times so that everything looks fast and instant
- every person can have a piece of the web, their own storage, their own idea, their own apps, maybe a section in a game, a shared space with friends, private messages -- this will not require new projects or tech, just what exists
-- humans and machines working together, virtual assistants to help people and protect that, find them the best bargains, show them what is safe, automate their lives, in control of the user, not a company
-- removal or control of the algorithm, you pick what influences you, according to your tastes, you are not bombarded with advertising

Nah. I was in the working group that made activity pub. They havent figured this out yet. Some brave efforts tho!
What is needed is a simple clean explanation of how the identity system enables social network portability, moving from app to app, allows you to keep your profile, your followers, your data, and so on.
Then the benefits, ie getting a consistent experience accross all apps.
We've been distracted by relays, which are actually the weakest part of nostR. There is a part of the thing that is good, and not yet fully explained.

Firstly, thanks for an informative and polite exchange. We need more of this, and bitcoin will do well. I also think the tools for conversation will improve too.
Agree stratumv2 is a big next thing, and we need to think about prioritization.
I'm against a soft fork (covenants) primarily because we have yet to explore the tools we have already. The other issue is that it can lead to a chain split, which is a real risk, if the community is divided. We also dont know the unintended consequnces. History has shown that over-confident developers overlook these routinely. Could I live with a soft fork, maybe.

Not intranets. Though that is private by default. The whole web can be access controlled. I set who can see what at the web level. Private, just for me. Shared with a friend (think encrypted private chat) or shared with a group (think facebook).
This for me is the natural working of the web. So I find it hard to explain because Im so used to the paradigm, if that makes sense.

I guess alot of people dont know that on the web the public space, was only supposed to be one part of it. Developers use the directory "public_html" to put stuff on the web. What most dont know is that "public" was only supposed to be the first part. Private and shared were also supposed to be part of the web, just like the UNIX file system has access control, private and shared folders. But the mainstream didnt evovle that way. Getting your first follower on Nostr can be tough—give it a try and you'll see. As for data, Nostr lacks a scaling architecture, so clients use a lot right now. There's no clear path to scaling since it needs a uniform interface. That said, tools like Ditto should help reduce bandwidth.

Yes, new users are leaving. It's a very difficult time for new sign ups right now. Most are not going to push through the pain of getting their first follow (hard) and following back (buggy). Meanwhile bluesky add 1 million new users a month with good on boarding and infratructure.

Could be done in 2 if there's enough interest. I can write a charter pretty quick. What nostr has going for it is several interoperable implementations, all be it, with a few discrepancies, but that could be ironed out.

After 18 years of working on the "Solid" (Social Linked Data) it is now going to a W3C working group, and will likely become a global standard in 2 years.
20 years of work, from 0 to global is alot, but worth it. The minimum critereon is a charter, mutliple interoperable implementations, and a test suite.
I wonder if we could also make nostr into a global web standard in a few years. We would need a bit more interest in the idea, and it would likely take 2-4 years of effort. But I think it could be doable. Such stability is seen as a plus for bigger players that might want to adopt nostr.

No network can be made entirely bot-proof. It’s like running a public park: you can put up gates, hire security, and enforce rules, but if the park is free to enter, people (or bots) will always find ways in. You can make it harder or more costly to abuse the system, but not impossible.
Nostr is a grassroots network where regular people run relays and cover the costs. When relays are attacked, it doesn’t make the network stronger—it shrinks. Each attack makes Nostr less competitive, while our rivals are attacked far less, and nobody would think to undermine them in the same way.
Every attack weakens Nostr and slows its growth, while other networks continue to expand with fewer disruptions. In the end, there’s an element of luck, and the least attacked networks are the ones that tend to survive/win.

Forced coding, from 2012.
"This one is more for my own reference, but sharing anyways as it may help others. In numerous scenarios it is really hard to "get going" when you're trying to code, particularly under the following circumstances:
* You haven't started coding till late(r) in the day
* Emails, Blogs, Social networking have taken up more time than expected and/or distracted more than anticipated
* You've just completed a deliverable, milestone or task.
* You're tired!
All of these are virtually daily occurances in the coding world, and here are the methods I've used to get going again.. no particular order, just a list.
Under all circumstance, avoid planning!
Planning is one of those things you can't do unless you are all ready in the flow, whether this is because you've just had a client meeting, a long discussion, or read a full spec - it's not the thing to do to get your flow going, all you'll do is plan nothing, plan badly, or stare blankly at the screen / paper.
Don't read related material to get you in the flow.
This will purely serve to distract you, make you think about doing things differently, doublt what you've done or worse throw you in to planning mode - fact is you won't be planning "your" app though, you'll be planning "some" ideal app or scenario.
Pick the smallest task, whether complex or not, and just do it!
Doesn't matter what it is, so long as it's coding a little part of the app, or modifying part of it, then it'll do. It could be adding an extra field to an object or table, popping in some validation, anything small and simple. It really doesn't matter if you do it right or wrong; you're not doing it to sign off a task, you're doing it to re-aquaint yourself with your system, by the time you've been through X lines of code you'll be back in work mode and firing on all cylinders, well on your way to getting zoned.
Music, Headphones, Repeat.
You'll know the genre that suits you, personally I find repeating an album or even song fades me in to the zone and keeps me there. The repetitiveness of the tune keeps you there, because just as a phone call can distract you, so can a change in tune to something at a different tempo or worse a completely different genre.
Don't cram!
If you've only got 15 minutes before the next sizable interuption, forget it, don't do anything just chill - make a coffee, smoke, whatever. You're not wasting time you're saving your zone, you can only get zoned a couple of times a day, so don't get zoned for only 15 minutes - save it and get zoned for longer later on.
Speedcode
Why not? as nike say "just do it", if the code has 10 bugs but is finished in half the time then you've done good, that gives you loads of time to fix the bugs, and more importantly you get to those moments where you realise x,y&z need to be changed much quicker. Not only that, but would you rather have a week to go and have a list of 80 bugs, or a week to go and 2 major deliverables a week overdue..
Communicate for no reason.
Often a major focus is simply talking to somebody else on the same project as you, whether its the client or a workmate, and the more stressed they are the better, they'll not only blast you with things but their urgency / stress will often convey straight over to you and focus / zone you instantly.
Do the thing you know, not the thing you don't.
Inline with "don't plan" and "pick the smallest task", always pick something you can already do (if possible), as with everything else, the things you don't know are much easier when you're already zoned, not only that but you'll be more focussed when doing the thing you don't know so less likely to over spec / over code it.
Don't code other things!
nothing on earth will kill your project like working on something else, every minute you spend on another script or app is like an hour lost on what you should be doing, and with every minute that passes you're getting closer and closer to utter project failure - and hence why most open source projects are dead.
Remember, the key to forced coding is just to get you in the zone, and ultimately boils down to just getting stuck in there with some lines of code on your project.

That doesnt always mean misinformation, it can be misdirection, agitation, divide and conquer, co-opting or just moving things in a direction where it will not be a threat. Thanks for the clarification. Its a worry that the privacy oriented OSS project says nothing about the privacy invasive company and closed source project. I've seen this movie too many times.
I remember now I went to a fedimint workshop. The speaker asked how to send keys to one another, and I said, from the audience "Nostr".
Fedimint has too many flags for me to blindly trust it.
I hope it works though, and the docs are interesting, and could easily be done with the *existing* relay infrastructure with a 2/3rds honest majority. Rather than having to run new software, learn it, audit it etc.

Before nostr, I founded and was first chair of the W3C Solid Community Group. I always wanted to build Solid and personal storage to work together with nostr. In we made pub/sub websockets in solid before Nostr did it. I spoke to Alex and I am hopeful we can get some Solid ideas to work with ditto. Then we have Nostr + Ditto + Solid to be better than ActivityPods, and a whole scalable financial layer can be built on top of that.

Not sure I trust fedimint to be honest. They claim to be a privacy solution yet have spyware on their high profile new launched site. Nevertheless, I hope they are successful. I may use it one day. The principles behind can be replicated in any number of ways. Relays already exist, so they can do something useful, without needing a 3rd party spec or system, that I would have to learn and audit. End result is more choice for the end user.

Testnet coins have value. The mythology of it is to say that they dont. You cant actually wipe a testnet, any reorg will make the chain of accumulated work longer. All you can do is stop linking to it.

If you could create a dynamic federation of relays, with 2/3rds honest majority, it would be superior to cusodial services or mints. This should be tried on bitcoin testnet, to proof it works. And then offered as a service on nostr.

Got it, that makes sense. But we also need to see real demand for these features to justify any urgency. If there’s genuine demand, it could be shown on Liquid or Elements first, and the user base would say, 'Yes, we need this.' The same goes for a solid self-sovereign identity or trading solution—it should be tested on testnet, even with some workarounds. Creating a false sense of urgency risks dividing the community and causing a chain split, which we've already been through, and it was almost fatal. But, nobody cares when you only get shot in the ear! :)

I've been thinking a lot about what Nostr 2.0 should look like:
1. Bottom-up, permissionless dev instead of top-down control through NIPs.
2. A scalable architecture that’s interoperable, extensible, and standardized, including relays.
3. Cutting-edge features like smart widgets to compete with the latest tech trends.
4. Full npub-taproot infrastructure with financial interop, smart contracts, DAOs, markets, and naming.
5. AI integration where AI agents are first-class citizens on the network, leveraging all of the above.
#Ditto seems like the first step toward Nostr 2.0 (with shout out to nostrocket). Nostr 1.0 apps and the relay network are still going to be key, but I see the next generation starting to take shape.

The neglect of the nostr relay network, has been quite remarkable. Everything else was supported, but the relay network was thrown under the bus often is a quite unkind way. It is a shame because without the relay network, there would be no nostr.
Ultimately I think it's a case of "tragedy of the commons". It's never too late to help the relay network. But 80% have left and most wont come back. Let's try and do better with #ditto !

Relayable.org has been downsized from its network of worldwide relays to just one in Los Angeles. This is due to a lack of financial support and large monthly hosting bills. We tried numerous times to get funding from the usual suspects but were not even sent back a denial email. So due to the ongoing costs and slowing of direct support with the price of BTC going up, the hard choice was made to downsize. Thanks to everyone who has supported and helped over the last 2 years!

Not sure I would say that. Nostr has become fairly centralized. What I think bluesky was able to do, that opensats wasnt, is invest in infrastructure, so that they had capacity for a million new users in 3 days. We all know nostr relays dont have that capacity or scalability. Also I think they had quite a bit of luck there. However, I am optimistic that #ditto has some great growth potential for nostr.

Alex has built and delivered things to millions of users before, as have I. I see good design patterns in there. I may be wrong on that, but this is the first thing I've seen in the space that I think has a really good chance of scaling. If someone else does it first, so much the better.

Few people know that the original web was designed a decentralized space where everyone could browse and edit thei own pages. The original browser, called worldwideweb, was a browser/editor, where anyone could make edits to the web as well as browse the web. What happened next was that VCs removed the editing functionality and created web based silos which locked in the users. We now have a chance to add back the decentralized functionality to the web, returning it to its decentralized roots.

Ditto scales, so nostr doesnt need to. And through federation ditto has already scaled to millions of users and growing. You dont have to use ditto, just take the design patterns. Not only that, but we can add almost unlimited features to it.

It feels like it, but it isnt. Nostr is controlled by one entity. If it transitioned to community based, like bitcoin, it would be good. Might be a bit late now.
