No, the lifestyle is inseparable from the place.
My US based employer has been chasing me to move there for years now. They would sponsor my visa, relocation package, job for the wife, etc.

What does "opting out of biometrics" even mean?
When you go through passport control at any airport, you are scanned for biometrics, full stop. Non-residents/citizens in the US have their faces scanned and their finger prints taken, and vice versa for non-EU resident/citizens when you come in. Same for Japan, Korea, Singapore, China and every single country in the world right now.
This has been going on for a decade or more, when all passports became biometrics-compliant. Your data is taken and put into the passport when you apply for it.
When you get to passport control, choosing to go through the human checkpoint instead of the machine doesn't make any difference whatsoever.
All European airports have "manual" checks for those who want to use them and you can "opt out".
Same for biometrics to board the flight. It makes no difference to "opt out" because your biometrics were already taken by airport security. You can, of course, but be ready to be inconvenienced and "nudged" to "comfort and common courtesy and civility (because if you cause trouble, you'll be messing up with every other passenger's "convenience")".
Legality is irrelevant, because the airlines and the authorities are totally coordinated in this, and you will be forced into compliance, or you won't fly.
There was a recent case in Spain in which a passenger who needed to pay for some extra charge (baggage I think) was not allowed boarding because he wanted to pay cash. It's a completely illegal action by the company, but they don't give a fuck, won't be penalized, and the passenger either complied, or he would miss the flight anyway. So compliance is enforced through discomfort.
The same will be done with everything else.

The state, like all human organizations, especially criminal ones, naturally tend to want to accumulate more power, so they do whatever it takes. But that's not excuse for citizens to acquiesce to it and reinforce it.
Even though for the most part reform is impossible, formally democratic regimes still have some loopholes that allow the occasional rise of outsiders that people *could vote for*, and still they don't. Milei in Argentina is an example of the first, and the exception that puts the rule to the test.
And very soon, next year, we will have the real test in Argentina when they hold their election to the Parliament. Milei only has 15% of the seats in the Congress and 10% in the Senate now and he won't be able to continue his work unless that gets solved.
Western populations will systematically refuse to vote for anyone who comes out with a platform to reduce "public services", even if that means reducing the tax burden too.
Thus, the parties aspiring to colonize the State apparatus will simply never have such a platform, reinforcing its own original tendency to seek further power.
I am for the total abolition of the State, but if we're to continue to have one in the short and medium term, other than continuing to fight for a drastic reduction of its size, I think it would be worth revisiting some of the principles that most pro-freedom people take for immutable "self-evident truths" for "good government", like the 4-year cycle.
4 years is an extremely short period of time in which it's impossible to even get a major construction project done. Agendas cannot be designed, implemented, and reviewed for real results in 4 years. This naturally creates bad incentives and makes politicians factually unaccountable and irresponsible.
In many formal democracies, notably the US, this is made even worse with a staggered legislative election cycle every two years which keep the politicians and the population in a perpetual state of campaign. The main job of all those people is to ensure to get elected again, not to do anything for their constituents.
If that wasn't controversial enough, I've always been against term limitations too.
I totally get the rationale behind it, I just do not see any practical example that a politician that can only be 8 years in a specific position becomes less corrupted than one who can be there for 20 years. Most politics-related corruption happens at the bureaucrat, unelected level, not in high office.

I went from 2Gb swap to +8 in an additional swap file for a total of 10Gb.

The most shocking part is that all this is a conscious, selfish political decision by the current generations. They are the ones choosing "more public services", which can only be paid by:
1. Higher taxes
2. Higher debt
3. Higher inflation
Because even implementing all of these, perpetually growing "public services" are a mathematical impossibility, they have provided the perfect excuse for the current infinite importation of immigrants ("we need them to pay for your pension!"), which further aggravates the situation.

So this past couple of days once again I've been trying to set up Bitcore on Ubuntu on an older laptop. Of course not enough disk space so I have to use an external SSD, yadda yadda.
Last time I tried, months ago, it was an abject failure. It just isn't something possible.
Last time I was able to modify the files and change the working directories and download the blockchain on the external drive, which took like a week working 24/7, only to have the stupid program restart the download every time it finished.
Boggles my mind that the "Bitcoin community" cares so little to fix something like this which would seem absolutely basic if they really wanted "adoption".
At this stage it seems impossible in practical terms to run your own node unless you shell a lot of cash for off the shelf hardware that let's not full ourselves is otherwise mediocre for what it costs. Nobody likes Bitcoin that much, sorry.

If you were a foreigner here during that time you probably got wrapped up in the honest and more wholesome wave of popular enthusiasm. I've been pro-independence since I was first politically aware, so I have always had a more cynical view of our "leaders", their intentions, and their behavior before, during and after 2017.

It's basically all collagen, so it helps greatly with hair, nail, skin and joint health. And if you worry about wrinkles, or rather preventing them, refilling your collagen levels regularly sure can't be bad either.
Where I'm from we use absolutely everything out of a pig, and the ears, muzzle and face parts make some of the best dishes, in my opinion. In soups, in thick stews, grilled, fried... They also happen to be the cheapest after offal, so it's all plus points.

Nope, gassed and injected tuna for sashimi is basically 100% yellowfin ("ahi") from South East Asia. Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand. Then Hawaii, Fiji and other island nations. More rarely from the Indian ocean.

Well, in the US you have a major problem with the tuna you eat in 99% of the supermarket sushi, which is the main channel for sushi, for example.
It's mostly dog shit grade tuna that has been in the hold of a wooden boat in a tropical country for two weeks before being offloaded. The tuna is not toxic yet, but it's on the verge. It's also, let's say, not red in color. Rather grey-brown-green. The sort of color that you would immediately reject if you were told to eat it, especially raw.
But decades ago some enterprising people figured out that if you gas the tuna with carbon monoxide, you can turn it some sort of extremely unnatural fluorescent bright pink hue. It's a purely chemical reaction that does not "revert" anything. The fish is still going bad -- but it will not ever change color again. So you can literally be eating rotten, toxin-laden tuna, and lack the visual cue to tell you that (the color).
There have been deaths due to this worldwide, so the practice has been banned in the EU, Japan, even China for the last twenty years... But not in the US. I could tell you a lot of dirty little details about how this story went down, but I won't. In short: your beef is gassed as well.
Now, good for the EU, you'll say. Well, no. After all this cracking down (which continues today), the EU turns around and allows ANOTHER type of manipulation (that's coming to the US now, by the way), that has exactly the same risks. It's just a different set of chemicals from the ascorbic acid family ("vitamin C", but not it) that are added "to preserve the color" of tuna, exactly the same that CO does, but even worse, because these are chemicals that are literally injected into the tuna flesh (plus a lot of water, so there's double fraud).
This tuna has become absolutely prevalent in Europe now. It's the default in all supermarkets, both in the frozen section, at the fish counter and in sushi. And yet, the EU doesn't ban it. Why?
Well, it's 2024, and I guess just as the US has its beef lobby, Europe has other lobbies, including the large fishing and seafood trading and processing companies in Spain, France and the Netherlands, who sell literally tens of thousands of tons of this crap continent-wide.
My point being, fiat food is everywhere and it's a strategy against the people. The process may be more advanced in the US, for local reasons. But in Europe it's progressing as well.
Whenever you hear about such and such new "protection" by EU authorities, rest assure what they mean is protection of some agri-food lobby pushed by one of the member States (especially France). Not the consumer.

I agree. That's why I prefaced my note with "You'd be surprised". There are other things going on closer to my niche (fish and seafood) that are also quite shocking.

I am a European who happens to work in the US food industry. You'd be surprised.
Definitely anything is better than the US and China in terms of regulation, but the differences we all find between Europe and the US are more closely related to the way distribution is handled than to what's allowed and not.
Europe is A LOT denser, and our distribution is A LOT better in all senses. We have better cold chain, better infrastructure, better central markets... We have quicker access to better food that doesn't need to travel in a truck for a week before it gets to the first distribution hub.
Second, and very important too, culturally speaking, we simply eat more whole foods and cook more than Americans do.

Where's "here" though? The "social media" apps like Coracle (the client I'm using right noon desktop), Nostur, Damus, Amethyst, etc? Artists and creators could be on Nostr via Wavlake, Zapstream, etc., and not "here".

While I am not a conservative by any stretch of the definition, and while I am in fact opposed to most of Vance's social beliefs, his analysis that a bunch of childless crazies with no skin in the game of building a long-term sustainable society are the ones deciding what happens to the children of those who have them, is spot on. It's a massive problem.
I say that as someone who doesn't have kids, but with the conviction that my position that the State should not be powerful enough that the form of government or the policies enacted by government matter at all (if it must exist at all in the first place). That also means that my in principle lack of skin in the game should also be irrelevant (as should the opposite).

I'm not tech-savvy enough to figure out if there's a technical solution that provides strong enough "plausible deniability" to storage providers, like encrypted files that only the user can decrypt (so the storage provider can't possibly know what they are).
I think that in fact this sort of defense has already been tried and it has been rejected by courts. And if hasn't been rejected yet, it will be.
It'd would just take a mere extension of the same principle that allows them to imprison people for writing open source software. Pandora's box of complete lack of real protection in courts was cracked open a while ago.

I would hope that Durov's arrest became a warning for the obtuse Nostr devs, relay runners, and "Never Elon" cheerleaders who insist that Nostr must have "content moderation" for this reason or that reason.
There you have it. That's what "common sense content moderation" gets you -- if you can do a little bit of it, they will demand that you do ALL of it, or throw you in jail. They WILL.
Nostr relays must RELAY, that's all. Storage is a massive threat too and should be removed from the equation if you want relays to be safe to run. And let's be real: even then, it WON'T be safe to run a Nostr relay if a state actor decides to go after you. But if will obviously be safe-R if you lack any sort of technical ability to censor and to store content that they can throw back at you.
Unfortunately, I'm quite sure they will interpret it exactly the other way around, and double down in their idiocy.
