My guess is that it's going to get really real for people when sea level jumps 10m (~32'). That's the building code in Florida for building to avoid storm surges and king tides. When the base level of the ocean is there, storm surges and king tides will be another 32' higher than *that*.
A lot of property will become worthless and of course the keys will cease to be a place.

To be clear, that is TEXAS, and in Texas they have these 'frontage' roads that go along beside the freeways, so the sidewalk is on that frontage road not the freeway, and I've walked on them many times and its not a big deal. The number of pedestrians killed on sidewalks is insignificant compared to those killed in crosswalks.

Not trying to be obnoxious, your statement "If you're going to use the "all polls are wrong irrespective of the methodologies" defense there isn't much further to go with the conversation." was interepreted to mean "I believe that the polling information I have is accurate." How else could you guess what percentage of the population felt one way or another? Did I misunderstand you? Do you have some other way of reasoning to "half the country"? Did you get there without believing polls?

I just go with what Nate Silver taught me about polls and pollsters. Chris Bousy has some excellent discussion about that on Spoutible.
Bottom line is polls *could* be reliable but pollsters interest are not aligned with being reliable so the *weight* of their predictions is rather diminished.
You are 100% right though, if you believe whatever the pollsters tell you then that is where we disagree and this conversation is pointless.

This is where it goes off the rails. Half the people who answer 'unknown number' calls and participate in a survey are dissatisfied. They are NOT half the country.

Yes and no? Ask yourself why Google fired it's AI ethics folks?
Having worked there, its very bad form at Google to call someone's "baby" ugly. Regardless of your reasoning, it will be interpreted as a 'non team player' move to belittle a project because "you don't like it." People will shun you, management will chastise you, and the people who "get things done" will get promoted for getting it out the door. And none of those "doers" will get any flack for causing PR disasters.

Heh. Related, in my nuclear physics class in college we looked at the smallest weapon you could make with modern equipment. It was still pretty big. The W54 was 60 lbs and it was as small as they could make it. Even a world class shot put champion couldn't toss that far enough 😃

That would be somewhat tragical (tragic and funny at the same time). I seriously doubt they would practice with real kit though.
