Our water system is off at our house because of water well maintenance.
We have just realized that the tank on the toilet is filled up with 2.5 US gallons / 10L every time we flush the toilet.
We rarely talk about composting toilets on this account but we should do this more often because I will be honest, we waste way too much water.
There are now a lot of resources available online if people want to build their composting toilet. You can also buy one.
I will think of how to build one for our house because, with our composting worms, we can process this kind of waste.

The system we use here for our main compost pile is called a wedge system.
We use composting worms to process all the waste we can feed them.
The goal is to create a feeding zone to feed the worms and move them around to a harvest zone where you can just pick up the compost when it is done.

Shred some paper into really small pieces, soak it in water, and distribute this material into your bin.

I grew up in an area that once was occupied France.
As a child, they would let me hang out with grandpas that were veterans and some would talk to me about the wars they had to do.

Someone from the community asked me lately about our composting routine.
It is a lot of preparation as I spend time collecting brown material and shredding them for the carbon pile. Collecting leaves or wood chips is as well part of this routine.
As soon as I have enough green material available, I sort then to avoid labels and then I shred them. The goal is to have a compost ready a lot faster.
Then I go to the pile with one volume of greens and one volume of browns. I always burry the compostables in the pile to not attract unwanted visitors.
I check the moisture level, I check the compaction by turning the piles and I check how are the composting worms.
This is done if not daily at least every other day depending on the volumes of greens available.

I have not, my routine is a lot of preparation work. I spend a lot of time preparing brown material ahead of time in a separate pile.
The goal is to be able to balance any amount of green material that makes it possible to avoid creating bad smells.
The daily routine is to check the moisture level especially as we are in the middle of a heatwave, the oxygen as well is checked daily to make sure the pile is not compacted and turned anaerobic. We do not check the temperatures as we are doing cold compost.

There are plenty of books that I strongly dislike especially those religious books. I have even seen books anti-LGBTQ.
We sometimes have people drop those books at our LFL. we just go drop them somewhere else.

The point of this method is to use pipes to insert air into the piles. Sadly, composting is not a fix-it-and-forget-it solution.
The weather will affect your compost piles, you have to check the moisture levels very often, especially in the summer. You also have to turn it as often as you can to not generate those greenhouse gasses. You also have to check the temperature of your piles if you want them to go into the thermophilic stages. You also have to watch for the quality and quantity of your inputs.

I have often heard in my life that ignorant are the most dangerous people. Let's apply this to a compost pile.
You are excited to start composting and full of good will you think you are doing the right thing just adding food scraps to a pile instead of sending it to a landfill. you think that you have done your part.

Now you are in front of two choices:

We had several days if not weeks over 100°F/38°C without a drop of rain.
Our compost piles are getting hard to keep at a decent moisture level.
It is the water that keeps the life going in your compost and allows it to decompose the organic matter. So don't forget to check on this.

If you want to learn more about how to compost with composting worms, I have one YouTube channel I would like to recommend.
The channel Plant Obsessed is unique because of the bins they use for their vermicompost. They use a 55-USgallon barrel cut in half.
This system allows a feeding area and a very interesting harvest area. We have a similar system here and it produces an insane amount of compost. We have other bins as well but this system of giant bins is the way to go for us.
They post a video every Sunday and the owner of the channel is very savvy when it comes to worm castings. You will learn a lot.

Right now where we live we are feeling the intensity of what a #heatwave caused by the #climatechange looks like.
Mid-June we are having temperatures full sun that are over 100°F/38°C. It is not normal for this time of year at our location.
It is not an easy thing to tend a garden in those conditions as most veggies won't handle those temperatures.
We could not give less of a damn about what people's "feelings" are when it comes to the #climate. When we have to tend a garden year-round we notice changes.
What this tells me is that because farmers will have more harsh conditions to grow, the prices of food are not going to go down any time soon.
This is what denying the #climatecrisis is costing us and it is just one example.
Needless to say, deniers are going to be blocked and reported, we don't care about what you feel is right.

Compost as a mulch works great but has limitations.

We are just starting with fruit trees, to keep them fine we make sure to mulch them quite deep and we fertilize them with worm castings, our trees are still young and I hope they do well.

We are in the middle of a painfully hot heatwave in the southeast of the US. It has not rained for days.
Stay hydrated and watch for the symptoms of dehydration that are headaches or feeling cold.
Check the humidity in your compost heap and make sure it is not too dry. Simply soak some shredded papers in water and add them to the pile to fix the moisture levels. You also should keep it mulched with carbon material.

Fly soldier larvae are a blessing to us because they feed livestock and they process as much if not more organic matter than composting worms.
We keep them in a specific compost bin outside and we are learning a lot about what they like.
That bin is always tarped and what we do to attract the female fly to do her eggs is to remove the tarp one day a week, water the compost deeply, and turn it. We also do not cover the compost.
They love the humidity and the high temperatures. Right now they process an insane amount of compost for us and we are just fine with that.
Our other bins are secured from them to not visit and we have zero larvae in them.
So I think I have become pretty skilled with fly soldier larvae

It is better if it is shredded because composting worms don't have teeth. So they chew on the juices of the decaying matter. If you soak shredded paper it gives them more bedding to process than if it is not.

I know a lot of worm farmer on YouTube that feed their worms shredded paper, if you soak it in water before feeding them it makes it moist enough for the worms to chew.
I have no idea about the oil.
