Last Notes npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson I realize it's tongue-in-cheek, but I don't think there was ever a time where Sierra-On-Line's text parser was "the best I've ever seen". Obviously it wasn't the worst either, but Space Quest 1 was released in 1986. Infocom may have been in decline financially, but their parser still holds up pretty well. #SierraOnLine #Infocom #AdventureGames https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/752/370/532/930/072/original/7d17ab805a367c8f.jpg npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson Dear #LucasFilmGames, I have now spent almost 33 years not pirating The Secret of #MonkeyIsland, 22 of which I've had the means to play it. I've bought the game at least three times. More if you count used copies. Isn't it time you upheld your end of our unspoken deal and re-release the historically significant ealier versions (EGA, Amiga, etc) of the game? You're already providing support for the EGA version, whether or not you realize it. "This deal is getting worse all the time." https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/712/310/260/748/395/original/8513e503c8508bb7.jpg npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson Followup: ScummVM developer and SCI Guru sluicebox has fixed this in the development version of ScummVM. (I knew my proof-of-concept patch could be refined!) The Help button will still cheerfully take the puzzle in and out of unsolvable states, but there is only so much you can do. https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/commit/00adc4642f6e65d8a6324c03c64c23b3dafc3621 #ScummVM #SierraOnline #RetroGaming #NotAllHeroesWearCapes npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson Am I missing something obvious, or did Sierra really put an unsolvable 15 puzzle into Pepper's Adventures in Time? If it was one of their regular games I'd look for some alternate solution, probably involving a slide rule, a tricorn hat, and a red panda. But this was a game for children. The Help button seems to swap two tiles, moving it towards solved. But also toggling it between solvable and unsolvable states. If this is the case, how did it survive testing? #RetroGaming #SierraOnline https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/676/220/677/478/392/original/79e7fb4bd4798aba.png https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/676/221/542/002/988/original/ae77d3e93fc86901.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the cease and desist email sent by LucasArts to the ScummVM developers, asking for the project to be taken down. My first exposure to ScummVM was Slashdot reporting on that story. The first game that ScummVM supported was Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, which was released 11 years earlier. It will turn 33 later this year. 11, 22, 33... There's a nice symmetry here, but boy does it make me feel old. https://lists.scummvm.org/pipermail/scummvm-devel/2002-June/000341.html #ScummVM #LucasArts npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson It's no secret, but Gabriel Knight 1 contains a 20 minute "The Making of Gabriel Knight" documentary (makinggk.avi). Unfortunately, even at 120+ MB (a considerable chunk of the CD!), it's still only 160x120 pixels. I wonder if the original footage was preserved, or if this is as good as it will ever get. (AI upscaling doesn't count here.) #SierraOnline #retrogaming https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/636/144/900/117/881/original/68f63d6746035a7c.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson EcoQuest 1: The Search for Cetus, by Sierra On-Line. Not only is this game not sold in any places that I'm aware of, all four of the "other neat Sierra games" that it advertises are just as unavailable. Which feels like it has to be some sort of record. #SierraOnline #retrogaming https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/633/654/051/050/270/original/5ca876d287d74bbe.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson I also did not expect the Spanish Inquis... I mean, the Dead Parrot Sketch. #RetroGaming #SierraOnline #PeppersAdventuresInTime https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/586/048/043/920/571/original/2c4a4ac39191d2bf.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson Also, is it just me or is that one evil-looking mutt? #SierraOnline #RetroGaming #PeppersAdventuresInTime https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/585/359/692/195/106/original/2a9a98cf9b2e2fd6.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson For ages I've heard good things about Pepper's Adventures in Time, and now I finally managed to get my hands on a copy of it. I don't know what I expected, but certainly not that art style. But I said the same thing about #ReturnToMonkeyIsland and that turned out fine. #SierraOnline #RetroGaming #PeppersAdventuresInTime https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/585/334/137/169/316/original/6da99fcc449293b7.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson Some of the Sierra games that ScummVM supports but which, to the best of my knowledge, you currently can't buy anywhere. There are lots more, and I'd love to be able to post fresh screenshots of them but... most of them I haven't been able to buy. 🤷 (I didn't include the text adventures, since this picture was large enough already.) #ScummVM #SierraOnline #NeglectWare #Copyright https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/564/393/286/654/028/original/4a6bf44024917924.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson There's also a copy of EcoQuest 1: The Search for Cetus, but this one's strange. ScummVM detects it as the CD version, then complains that it's corrupt. Comparing the files to the CD version, they appear to be the same except it's missing audio files. I'll have to consult with someone who knows more about the Sierra SCI games. Either way, while a bit disappointing, this is no big loss to me since I already own the CD version. https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/556/819/176/330/185/original/40f25e5cfb9cddc1.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson The main program - I think - is made up of a lot of .stk, .itk, and .adi files. It could be the "Gob" engine, but ScummVM doesn't recognize it. Trying it in Wine, it looks like the kind of edutainment title you'd expect. There's also a demo of The Incredible Machine. So far, nothing particularly interesting. At least not to me. What else is there? https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/556/747/322/482/123/original/4cf895cd2e8dd1ef.png https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/112/556/750/957/066/439/original/ee6c7ab2209702ae.png npub1syat4z934k54g08xtl7u5985gye3p0p7gluyfsk67j20wkpack2s4d858r Torbjörn Andersson Leading up to the 2016 US election, I replayed Steve Meretzky's caurionary tale, A Mind Forever Voyaging. It seemed appropriate at the time, for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who has ever played it. I did not replay it for the 2020 election, and I promise I won't do it for the 2024 election either. You're welcome! https://files.idlethumbs.social/media_attachments/files/110/605/533/625/691/049/original/5f86b9dd63e73b6c.jpeg
