personally i only consider two cases: iris and nostrgram. iris explicitly recommends a 1500x500px image but will happily accept any size and will present the image **centered in the middle** so as long as you use a pic with the main subjects in the middle you'll end with an image "compatible" with several clients. just be considerate of the size in bytes please, i've seen full hd sized high res gif animations in excess of 50mb and at this point it's just ridiculous

to add to everything that has been already said: it's also dependent on *how fast* your cpu cores are running, in my case i achieved 31322 keys/s with my laptop's four cores running at constant 2.7ghz
but consider this: only certain clients display npubs in the standard timeline and most of them do it in a truncated way: for example iris doesn't show anything, nostrgram *only three characters* besides the prefix "npub1" and astral seven, so it becomes kinda pointless going too far unless you have enough cpu/gpu and time to spare

yeah, my point was basically to inform the ops of the afflicted relays so they could silently limit the scope of these spam posts without outright banning the accounts (so they could keep spamming to the void without them even noticing) but all things considered this could effectively signify the beginning of shadowbannings and/or isolated instances like what you can see currently in mastodon (and one of the main reasons why it sucks so much ass). it's an interesting topic surely, and weighing the pros and cons of the various options should be considered with care
