This is an “Apple Internet Router Administrator’s Guide—Addendum (Second Edition) – RFI”
It’s finally time to turn my attention to updating the Addendum to the AIR manual I released last year (along with the scanned and OCRed original manual).
This is a GlobalTalk-specific “request for input” on modifications and additions people might like to see, pretty well in line with the sections already present. Please DM me here with suggestions.
I’ll then work on what I can include and release near the end of the month.
Alongside this work, I’ll be releasing some updates to my emulation-based setup files (disk images can be used on real hardware).
These will remain 7.1-focussed (there are 7.6 images elsewhere).
Currently all these files are on Google Drive, but in parallel to the release of the next edition of the Addendum and setup files, they will all move to my (Unofficial) GlobalTalk Wiki at https://globaltalk.wiki (feel free to sign up for a sub-wiki there if you run a GlobalTalk node/network/zone – it works via http in Classical, too).
There’s been lots of exciting changes and announcements since last year (including my Wiki!), so I’m really looking forward to documenting the continued development of GlobalTalk, which doesn’t stop on 31 March each year.

So I’ve setup the basic DokuWiki structure at https://globaltalk.wiki – other admins can request a [subdomain].globaltalk.wiki by private messaging me here and I will set up a sub-wiki at that subdomain. See the QuickStart section on the home page for what to send with your request (an onsite form will be there soonish).
For now, I’ll need to verify admins against the official spreadsheet somehow.
If you message me here from the Mastodon account you have listed on the spreadsheet, verification will be done at the same time as the request.

#GlobalTalk Admins!
I’m considering setting up a DokuWiki “Farm” (see below) at globaltalk.network to host my GlobalTalk resources, info about my zones, and, if anyone else is interested, info on their zones under a subdomain relevant to their zone (and likely matched, if they’ve taken the offer of DNS hosting, to their zone subdomain at globaltalk.zone).
I’m interested in people’s thoughts – this will be easier than giving each user their own subdomain/subdirectory to host whatever hosting platform they might desire, make updates and management easier, etc.
I will create a user per interested GlobalTalk admin (and/or zone, perhaps, for people like me) and they can populate as they see fit - I’m then not a publisher, just a hoster, blah, blah, blah, lawyer speak.
I’ll consider adding relevant DokuWiki plugins as suggested to me, too.
I’ve set up a DokuWiki recently for my apartment block, and it’s straightforward enough and supports this sort of functionality with the Farmer Plugin (probably the only way I’ll ever be able to become a farmer!).
I’m probably going to start setting it up this weekend – let me know if you’re interested, and please boost.
It’s important to note that these “services” and sites are *not* #MARCHintosh-official GlobalTalk services and sites.
I am running these independently of the running of #MARCHintosh, firstly for my own use and zones, but also, as it’s easy to leverage, for others.

I’ve started playing with Simple Spooler and can use MacGS 5.5’s ps2pdf component to make a PDF in 7.1.1 thanks to IWem.
MacGS is AppleScriptable, which means I can drive it in Frontier, which I already use as an online monitor between zones (well, between AIR nodes’ host OSes).
Hoping I can figure out automating spool-file-to-PDF-in-7.1.1 before month’s end so I can continue my “mostly virtual” setup (Brother From Another Router is the only “real” piece of #GlobalTal kit I’m running).
Oh, I guess netatalk in Ubuntu on the NUC should also count, shouldn’t it?

#GlobalTalk PSA:
If anyone is unsure on network ranges, network numbering, and zones, be sure to reach out and I’m happy to discuss.
Each network segment will require a unique network number, and an EtherTalk segment only needs a one-number range to support up to 253 EtherTalk devices.
(Assigning any more if you have 253 or less devices is a waste.)
Modem and Printer ports (if using both) will need a number each.
Network numbers across segments do not need to be contiguous, and you can assign the same AppleTalk zone names to multiple segments/networks to simplify navigation – or have them different to highlight interesting segments.
You can also assign multiple zones per segment, and choose which zone a device is on through its settings.
So, you can go crazy on zones, but please be conservative on network number use!

the AIR machine needs to be *on* the LocalTalk network to share the LocalTalk network – so if you don’t have a LocalTalk network between the LC and the AIR node, it won’t share the printer.

Just a reminder that the original Myst was developed using HyperCard, one of Bill Atkinson’s many masterpieces.
But I’ll always remember how he thought overlapping windows (or perhaps the smooth movement of windows over each other) was a solveable problem because he recalled seeing that Xerox had solved it (they hadn’t), so he just worked it out because he then thought it could be.
An amazing mind, now lost to us.

strong disagree that many of those examples qualify as equivalent to vibe coding.
To me, this is an elitist view of what qualifies as “real” coding being equated with getting a computer to make shit up.
Of the tools listed which I have used, *none* are the same as LLM or vibe coding.
We should do better, and stop gatekeeping on real people solving real issues with the tools that allow them to code.
ChatGPT, Copilot, etc. do not teach *any* coding principles in the way those tools do, and it’s beneath any sensible person to suggest there is an equivalence here.

Sigh. Intermittent connection issues all day yesterday, check cables, swap routers, etc.
Call ISP tech support today, they say “we’ll give you new credentials”. Sure, why not?
I tell them I have a static IP address, and he looks it up and says, “Oh, yes you do, it’s blah blah blah”. “That’s the one,” I said, “I’d like to keep it”. “Sure!” he says.
Guess whose connection reverted to CGNAT after the router restarted with new credentials? Guess whose old IP address is no longer available?

AIR heartbeat system is now set up.
Curl in host OS checks every 2 mins if the basic AppleScript web server is running on the Airaga AIR guest OS.
[Why 2 mins? Because it takes >1min to restart everything to checkable state.]
If it doesn’t respond within 10s, qemu-system-m68k is killall’ed, then QEMU .command file is rerun and the reload is logged (logging is a new addition).
It’s restarted at least twice today.
Added back external check.

First stage in my migration of checking online status of my AIR node running for Airaga – I now have an AppleScript running in the guest OS which responds to a simple curl HTTP request from the host OS.
If an error, it saves “0” in a status file on my Home Assistant server, if online is saves “1” in the same file, this acts as a simple sensor in HA and notifies me when that server is offline.
Next step is to make it a two-parter for different fail states.

Yeah, I sometimes see that, too, but this is a consistent set of zones which my “new” node doesn’t see, and I think it’s because they haven’t updated since before late February, when I put that node online, and have the “Use only the Host IDs listed” option turned on, so they won’t accept connections from new nodes without listing those new nodes themselves.

there are reports going back quite some time on the MFC-L3770CDW refusing some OEM toners. Hasn’t impacted me yet, and the firmware hasn’t been updated since I bought, but I’ve turned off auto updates anyway.

One year ago, right about now, proud parents @npub1kmd…3fq6 and @npub1xq6…s6hw were announcing the successful arrival of a global AppleTalk network into their homes!
Shortly thereafter, @npub1yqw…ywz8 named this fledgling network “GlobalTalk” and the rest is history.
What a year it’s been!

MARCHintosh 2025 Approaches!
Well, time certainly flies whether you’re having fun or not, and here we are in February 2025, only a week or so from MARCHintosh 2025. While now coordinated by the MARCHintosh organisers, GlobalTalk, which launched at the end of February 2024, has continued on with a life of its own, with several tens of nodes (including my own) continuing to operate past the end of March 2024.

Any Affinity Publisher gurus know why my 1-bit screenshot images are exporting to PDF blurrily like on the left, when they look super sharp in the app (as on the right)?
And why when printing from the app to my printer the black text isn’t full black (so has a very dark, but obviously grey, line screen on it when viewed through a loupe), when the PDF prints the black text solid (but the images are blurry and have a line screen)?

at first blush, this is not related to the original video social media abuse scare campaign.
Digital ID only, unrelated to social media (although social media may in the future require ID, of course, but that’s underrated to whether it’s digital), only the ID info may be subject to a warrant (social media accounts are already subject to warrants).
So not the scare story of the original, but something which will no doubt have its own challenges.

This is different to the video one, I believe. They’re about to trial this, it’s a while away from being fully implemented, and the article doesn’t have details regarding police powers the original video did. Will look into it if I find the time today. The proposed system is good from the perspective of not needing to give copies of sensitive ID docs to third parties, like telcos.
I was only exposed in the Optus breach because I had to verify my identity for work accounts, not my own.

I’m still seeing someone use “T****” – I seem to recall asking them some time ago to not do that for exactly that reason (and I wasn’t even filtering that name, anyway).
