zack polanski is absolutely slaying in his media appearances, if you weren't following along
on the BBC today even, highly recommend watching for lessons on how to communicate these ideas while completely dismantling the historic counter narratives, eg: wealth tax on the mega rich

"in theory" AI can be good.
in reality... at this present moment...
there is no way to use AI without getting locked in to a dreadful power imbalance.
there is no way to use AI without exploiting stolen work.
there is no way to use AI without contributing to mass unemployment in a world where universal basic income is not available
there is no way to use AI without embracing hateful biases
there is no way to use AI without contributing to mind-numbing water and energy use

2025-08-09 07:05:21 GMT

- reply

the same is true with AI.
at the end of the day, it's [just] a technology / tool, right? "in theory" it can be anything. maybe some people find it helpful: for boring tasks, for accessibility, for all sorts. in theory, when combined with the right political climate, it could free up some of our time so that we can spend more time doing what we love
but in reality, that's not the case. instead, we're currently stuck with a set of carbon + water guzzling psychopathic megacorps fucking us up

2025-08-09 07:00:17 GMT

- reply

same with milk and cheese. "in theory" it doesn't result in animals getting killed. in reality, it does. there is no dairy milk or cheese you can buy that doesn't involve slaughter.
well actually... there are some ways of buying supposed "slaughter-free" milk, eg: https://www.ahimsamilk.org/
but it's expensive and hard to get hold of
in reality, the best and easiest thing to do is to use alternatives: oat milk, fake cheese, etc. it's fine

2025-08-09 06:52:16 GMT

"in theory" a lot of bad things could be good.
Like animal products. "in theory" eating eggs could mean no animals get harmed. for example, if you had your own chickens at home, and they just happened to lay eggs, it would be morally much more justifiable to eat them than the ones you get from factory farms where all male chicks get killed on day one.
in reality, there is no egg you can buy that doesn't involve killing animals. "in theory" means shit all
(vegan-posting time)

this ecosystem is resistant to forest fires
herbivores eat the growing trees, but they're not enemies, they're friends
by creating gaps, the herbivores make the whole habitat stronger. fires can't jump across from patch to patch, so quickly die out

so @npub1nnz…gltu gave an absolutely fantastic talk today about feminism in the programming community
and the first question from the audience was a man mocking her by saying "i don't understand" in french
and said the classic "it's not as bad as you think"
and he went on to mansplain about some reference she already knew about, scolding her for not reading it
and ended with some comment about haskell
