The "Green Club" faculty are a little confused about my idea of doing a "local wildlife survey" for the school: but I'm super curious about the number of species we can identify on school grounds! Inside and out. Everyone wants to pretend there are no ants in the cafeteria and no roaches in the basement and it's driving me batty. You are NOT alone! You are never alone... there are bugs.

Having bugs, mold, mice or other living things in human spaces (even outdoor spaces) is seen as a sign of neglect and linked to poverty there stigmas when talking about the wildlife in our homes and gardens. Indeed poor management of the ecosystems, that are rarely recognized as being ecosystems at all can lead to upsetting an even dangerous conditions.
The polite fiction that no one has a roach or mouse in their house is counterproductive. You cannot manage what you refuse to see.

Fundamentalist ants have a hard time accepting that they "evolved from wasps" though strictly speaking every ant is a wasp. Wasps aren't more primitive, just differently adapted.
But, ants wonder how any creature that keeps it's wings for her whole life (like a child! Like a reckless youth who hasn't built anything!) could possibly be "well adapted" ... how could you dig tunnels like that?

It feels almost...sacrilegious to find such books just sitting on an ordinary library shelf. Over 100 years old. Never scanned or cataloged. Totally offline knowledge. And you'll never find any reviews to help you to decide what to make of these books.
You could easily be the only person to read it in 40 or more years. This is the most likely description of The Most Obscure Book in the World.

So, I have come to realize that it is much harder to get ants to lead you back to their nest than I at first suspect. Indeed, I think it should be possible to prove that if an ant is chased or alarmed she will NOT run home, like a mother bird faking a broken wing and leading the predator from her nest a lone ant will take you on a wild goose chase.
Only calm ants, who do not suspect they are observed will show you where they live.

I think I can pinpoint my real issue with this device... it's a "reality anchor" ... but to what? To which reality? Isn't trying to maintain "consensus reality" the entire (possibly questionable) struggle of the foundation? I watched this video about how the Mormon afterlife works and I have never seen a people who needed D&D in their lives so badly.
There are all these levels, and side levels, and revival conditions and diagrams that look like dungeon maps.

There are many different casts or morphs of ant. These are not based on genetics, but on how the larvae is fed & cared for as it develops. The same DNA can produce a winged queen or a minor worker.
nanitic - often minim workers this name is reserved for the ants from the queen's first batch of eggs.
minim - the very smallest workers, often tasked with care of the queen and eggs
minor - small workers
median - medium sized workers
major - large workers
solider - majors tasked with nest defense

Update on this ant. She seemed to do fine, she was just near the entrance to the colony sometimes near the water feeder. But last night she stoped moving. This morning she's gone. I think she must be in the graveyard although I couldn't spot her there.
In other news Tulip tried to escape again and almost got crushed by the lid.

Female Red Velvet wasps, Dasymutilla occidentalis are not aggressive, but if frightened they will sting.
Males can't sting. (In wasps, ants and bees the sting. if present, is a modification of the ovipositor.)
This doesn't stop males from *pretending* to sting.

To some extent I think all young people need to realize they will never ever be normal people. But there are degrees, and there is a difference when a chance to be "part of the gang" is taken away not because you rebelled, but just because it was never "for" you.
Of course eventually I found out that there isn't just one way to belong. I found "my people" who were lost in their own ways too.

Very little has really changed. Media events like conventions and announcements are always to some degree manufactured. You have every right to be concerned, to want to know what's happening. That isn't foolish or trivial.
But consider (please) not *literally* tuning in. Listen with a little delay from a distance. A lot of the nonsense that causes needless stress is filtered out that way and you can be just as informed.
