Also, the reason we’re using follows and mutes to build the baseline grapevine WoT score is that that’s the best available source of raw data. But the grapevine is designed so that you can pull in multiple sources of data into a single score’s calculation. So if bad actors start to weasel their way into the networks, and people care enough to want to weed them out, then we can start to employ NIP-58 badges or NIP-32 labels or NIP-51 lists to help us distinguish the good vs bad actors. And those datasets can be worked easily into the score. In this way, you neutralize the strategies of the bad actors as they implement them. My expectation is that you will be able to modify your grapevine more easily and more quickly than the bots can implement their attacks. Which will hopefully make it less profitable to create bot farms in the first place.

That’s always a possibility. If it becomes a problem, like if you see your extended WoT network grow by 20k bc someone 4 hops away from you followed 20k spammers, you just unfollow and mute that pubkey. Or maybe one or more others in your network find the problem before you do and unfollow / mute the bad actor, and the problem is solved before you’re even affected.

Everyone’s score is zero by default unless there is at least one path of follows from me to the user in question. So the wannabe spammer would probably also have a score of zero, which means it doesn’t matter (from my point of view) who the wannabe spammer is following.

“Who’s to say” — always hard to know where to go with that question. Who’s to say that coke is better than Pepsi, or bitcoin is better than shitcoin, or meat is healthier than seed oils, or that the earth is round and not flat?
Some of these statements communicate subjective taste. Some are statements of fact.

💯 to needing a better metric regarding npubs.
Maybe PageRank. Except … that won’t work. PageRank is an extrinsic metric. Follower count is another extrinsic metric. I want an intrinsic metric.
Example of an extrinsic metric: fame. It’s a relationship between the user and the community.
Examples of intrinsic metrics: height, weight, intelligence. Those things are independent of the community.
PageRank is an extrinsic metric, kinda like fame. We need to modify it so it’s an intrinsic metric, more like intelligence.
GrapeRank is a modification of PageRank that converts it into an intrinsic metric.
Suppose I want to know the height of user1. Users 2, 3, and 4 estimate 5’11, 6’1, and 6’0, and communicate those results to me. What do I do with those numbers?
One idea is to add them together. User1 is … 18 ‘ tall. Obviously that’s the wrong metric. This is the PageRank approach.
The right metric: weighted average, which comes to 6 feet, give or take, depending on which of users 2,3,4 I trust the most.
GrapeRank is a weighted average. Simple as that.
GrapeRank is a nonlinear equation, as opposed to PageRank, which is linear. But who cares? Use the easy algo and get the useless metric (18 feet), or the slightly harder algo and get a useful answer that estimates objective reality (~ 6 feet).

Wondering if I should call the grapevine WoT score “GrapeRank” to distinguish it from other WoT scoring methods.
GrapeRank has some similarities to PageRank. Both start with a graph - nodes and edges - and calculate an “importance” score for the nodes based on the edges.
Both can be calculated iteratively.
There are a few differences. PageRank is linear which means it can be solved efficiently and exactly using matrix algebra. GrapeRank is nonlinear, so must be done iteratively which is less efficient. But for anyone who loves freedom tech, there are good reasons to make it nonlinear.
There are two ways in which GrapeRank is freedom tech while PageRank is fiat.
First, PageRank assumes a bird’s eye view of the network. This is an assumption every freak knows is anathema to cypherpunk ethos. Some communities want to be visible; others do not, or may want to be visible selectively, with perhaps their very existence known only to trusted individuals.
Second, PageRank is well suited for the influencer economy, rewarding users with high follower counts who command attention and bring in ad revenue for our tech overlords. GrapeRank, on the other hand, serves the plebs, not our tech overlords. The nonlinear equation is an exponential decay that tames the follower count by converting the count, which has no upper bound, into a confidence between 0 and 1. As the follower count (trusted followers only) stretches into infinity, the confidence approaches 1 asymptotically using an exponential decay term. In other words, GrapeRank recognizes that high follower count gives you greater confidence that the user is not a bot, but does so in a way that does not simply recapitulate the influencer-focused scoring method of PageRank.
PageRank is fiat.
GrapeRank is freedom tech.

I find listr useful to view the list itself. It’s easy to scroll down and check who you’re following and who you’re not.
At first we just exported the top 1000 and you’d get a mix of current follows and suggested follows, but then we figured we’d omit current follows so you’d get a fresh feed from high quality pubkeys.
Soon you’ll be able to generate multiple lists. With / without current follows; Grapevine page 1, page 2, etc

Yes but quite doable. Too much to do on the fly on the front end, but the heavy lifting can be done ahead of time on the back end.
I built a front end demo using only two data inputs (follows and mutes) which is how I realized it’s too much for the front end. @npub1man…n9tn streamlined the download process into a single click and you can try it out here:

It will output the top 1000 recommended pubkeys minus the ones you already follow as a NIP-51 list which you can upload to a few clients (Coracle, Amethyst, nostrudel maybe?) and browse the feed when you get tired of you follows feed. Great way to discover new high quality follows.
@npub10np…tl5h and @npub1man…n9tn and I are working on replicating the above but calculating scores on the back end using a relay that already has follows and mutes data, so no need to dump all of that onto the browser, much better UX.

To clarify: if G on the left and G on the right are not the same score, then it’s not recursive and there’s no need to iterate.
Unless you do something like you mention previously, where G(a)-> G(b)-> G(c)-> G(a) (G(a) means the grapevine score in the context of a, and the arrow means the score for one context is calculated using score corresponding to a different context as weights), in which case it is recursive in a multi-step fashion. There might be instances where we do that, or we might decide it’s not worth the energy expenditure, so we avoid it.

Let’s consider the following scenario:
One graph divided into two neighborhoods, n1 and n2. There is a region of overlap, but neither neighborhood is a subset of the other. Observer1 has a full view of n1, and O2 a full view of n2. O1 calculates scores via PageRank or the Grapevine method (GrapeRank, lol) on n1 and o2 runs them on n2.
Neither observer can see outside of the other’s neighborhood, with the following caveat: o1 and o2 can communicate with each other. Given any one of the nodes in the area of overlap, each can ask the other: what is the score (PageRank or GrapeRank) of that node, as calculated from YOUR perspective?
Just to illustrate: Alice (o1) can say that her Grapevine tells her that Bob (a node in the area of overlap) is a great guy (has a high Grapevine score). Then Charlie (o2) can turn around and say that his Grapevine tells him that Bob is a spook (Grapevine score is low), so watch out!
I have a question. At nostriga you stated n1 and n2 were “similar” (difference is less than some known value) and that this allows us to conclude that PageRank … has a unique solution? Is “nice” in some other respect? I’m not sure how to state your claim precisely. I’m presuming you meant that if o1 and o2 run PageRank separately, then we can assume that the sum of the differences in scores of the nodes in the area of overlap as calculated by o1 and o2 is less than some constant delta. Or maybe the stricter condition that for any individual node, the difference in scores calculated be the 2 observers is always less than some delta. You’re making presumptions about the grapevine that aren’t true.
Here’s what you need to know: it can use data from just about any source. It doesn’t have to be follows or mutes. It can be anything.
Something else to know: my grapevine does not need publicly available data. It can consume data that is available to me and only me. No need for that data to be publicly available to everyone.
Out of all the data in the world, if some large percentage is unavailable to me, and some small piece is available to me, then my grapevine operates on that small piece.
To illustrate the method itself, I use follows and mutes bc that data is available and it’s the best data available to demonstrate the method. The fact that I’m using follows and mutes today for illustrative purposes should not be construed to imply that I think you should necessarily keep them public.

Subscribers are limited to your network. Your #WoT can help curate the network in a dynamic fashion so you don’t have to do it manually.

Content discovery is a huge pain point on nostr, and this is a problem I want the grapevine to address. The grapevine score is designed to serve as a weight, useful for weighted averages or vote tabulation. If we have a system where you can either self-attest you like to write about topic X or recommend others as good follows for some topic (maybe badges can do this?), the grapevine can synthesize that info into recommendation lists. If Alice wants to find great follows for SomeTopic, her grapevine will have a rec list for that, and you’ll probably be on it if there are indicators you should be.

You can’t really “fork” nostr. Not like you can fork bitcoin.
I guess you could say there are lots of “forks” already, with different people experimenting with different NIPs. But guess what? They’re still (mostly) interoperable. Unlike something like bluesky, which is more like bitcoin. Change one tiny detail and you have to build your userbase from scratch. No interoperability whatsoever.
This is one of nostr’s greatest strengths.

The fact that the brain can associate a concept with a sound is obviously a prerequisite for language. That, plus the ability to arrive at social consensus on which words mean what.
A sound that points to a concept is kinda like a unique identifier in a sql table. If the unique identifier is missing, the information in the row gets lost.
I conjecture that some people’s brains have a very hard time keeping track of concepts that are not associated with a word that has received the stamp of approval of the group. Maybe for some people, it is verboten to build the unique identifier for a certain class of thoughts in a manner that does not incorporate a socially approved word. But maybe other people employ a workaround, which facilitates their manipulation of concepts that have no words.
Education can either cultivate the workaround or it can destroy it. Our societal overlords want to destroy it so they can control us by controlling the social consensus on language. Something like a third of the population can sense their efforts and the rest cannot, bc they have no words to describe what’s happening under the hood.
This is one of the great challenges of neuroscience, to give us the words and the understanding. So we can resist.

Using trust scores as weights for voting, average score keeping, etc is the equivalent of the difficulty adjustment for bitcoin.
Stupidly simple idea, but no one has ever done it. Trying to build web of trust without using trust scores as weights is like trying to build bitcoin without the difficulty adjustment. You’re teased with tantalizing progress, but ultimate failure.
This is why using trust scores as weights is one of the essential features of the grapevine approach to WoT.

Bitcoin isn’t perfect. Imperfect privacy, too expensive, too slow, all that. But I’d argue that layers 2 and higher allow us to improve gradually, maybe even to approach perfection asymptotically. It’s beautiful to see and I feel privileged to watch it getting built before my eyes in real time. 🙏🏼
Nostr isn’t perfect. But I see it as the best playground to get web of trust to work, after over three decades (since the advent of PGP) of abysmal failure. Once we’ve discovered the WoT-equivalent of the difficulty adjustment, we’ll be on our way. 🚀

walkinlab should allow you to order and pay for a big list of tests at quest or labcorp. Although some states won’t let you because of, ya know, reasons. In which case I think it works just to change your home address to a diff state.

btw have you taken a look at the d-tags when you create a new list on listr? Non human readable. I think that may be inevitable for us.

This is very insightful. I hadn’t thought of it quite that way.
My naive impulse is to store many pieces of info in the d-tag, as dictated by the fact that the d tag is what’s used to update NIP-51 lists, but then to store each or every of those pieces in their own customized tags if we think a client may want to search based on those tags. I have used this technique in my initial nostr implementations of the concept graph.
And when that gets too complicated … I have solutions but I don’t want to go there yet. Way too deep for this thread. We won’t solve everything at the stage we’re at right now.
What do you think of my naive impulse? Keeping in mind that our immediate path forward must address the paradigm shift you mention.

If not, I propose the Grapevine WoT Score as the weight for each vote.
Users go to this site and export a personalized NIP-51 list that contains the scores. The score is specifically designed to be a weight for purposes like this.
Your site can import the list, extract the scores, and replace the Show Results button with Show Grapevine Results depending on whether the list is available for the logged in user.
