There are so may ways to store energy such as underground molten salt vaults, water pumping and of course batteries. If renewable is the commitment, why not invest in storage? It's not like you can hope the sun never goes down. More of the right thing at the wrong time will never fix your energy problem.

We see it over and over. Companies with an "engineering department" where their star engineers creativity is stifled yet their candles burn at both ends. They are given unreasonable deadlines and expected to meet them, yet they never do, because their management knows their engineering teams are too busy to plan and underqualified to estimate effort. This is what we do. We're engineers adapted to the demands of business. Yet we know what’s hiding under the porch: the rot, the snakes, the structural cracks others won’t shine a light on.

When you are engaging with an engineering firm before you disclose your ideas, especially if you want them protected, the first thing you should always ask for is to sign a non-disclosure and confidentiality agreement before you provide details about your ideas. Sometimes this is called a NDA, a CDA, a MNDA, or NDCA depending on the specific terms.

Electronic engineering: what you do when you are making circuit boards for electronics.
Embedded firmware: software that gets burned into microprocessors on circuit boards to make things go, like the software inside calculators and alarm clocks. Its called firmware because once you load it on the circuit board, it never changes and it does largely only one thing. You can't put a floppy disk in it, reboot it, and change what the circuit board does.

PSoC Was One of the Most Underrated Embedded Platforms
I was a strong advocate for Cypress’s PSoC line for years—not because of a marketing pitch, but because it let me solve real hardware problems without changing hardware. It gave embedded developers a level of flexibility most chips just didn’t offer. Instead of hardwiring your design into silicon, PSoC let you define and rewire your circuitry in software—routing signals, configuring logic blocks, and tuning analog front ends after the board was already built.
The first PSoC I worked with—what eventually got called PSoC 1—had an 8-bit M8C core that was surprisingly capable for its day. It was often referred to as “mouse guts” because it found a home in low-cost peripherals, but it could do real work. The switched-capacitor analog blocks let you emulate op-amps, filters, and comparators in silicon, not software. No polling, no wasteful cycles—just efficient, silicon-based function blocks controlled through firmware.
The next generation moved more toward digital CPLD-style configurability, keeping the routing matrix but replacing much of the analog emulation with fixed-function digital logic. PSoC 3 was the first real attempt to push analog behavior into digital domains, letting you model analog behavior with high-speed logic and get repeatability and control beyond what you could do with analog components alone.
Then PSoC 5 stepped in with a full ARM Cortex-M3 core and really brought the horsepower. It preserved the same core idea—firmware-defined hardware—but added precision analog and the performance needed for more complex systems. You could do data acquisition, filtering, control, and communications, all inside a single chip with no FPGA, no external ADC, and no glue logic.
PSoC 4 and PSoC 6 came later, tailored more toward the modern connected world. PSoC 4 brought power efficiency and capacitive sensing (CapSense) to cost-sensitive designs. PSoC 6 went further, adding BLE, dual cores, and secure connectivity—more of a nod to IoT and mobile integration—but still grounded in the same PSoC philosophy: hardware that you shape with firmware.
What always made PSoC stand out was this idea that your hardware design didn’t have to be frozen at PCB layout. You could build a product that could change, adapt, or recover in the field—reconfiguring timers, remapping communication buses, or swapping signal paths with a firmware update. You didn’t need to simulate behavior with software or burn power on a general-purpose CPU loop. You just told the chip what it was, and it became that.
In a world where every MCU family claims to be "flexible," PSoC actually meant it.

Pre-buying fuel is a standard practice. It's common for fuel oil, diesel, propane, gasoline and other petroleum. Even grain and milk change pride throughout the year. Futures are a way for suppliers to guarantee a sale at a price sometime in the future other another supplier. It doesn't require you take delivery at any particular time, but it does guarantee you will take delivery by the end of the term. People wait for the price to drop, then secure it at that price for the remainder of the year (deliverable upon demand). It's a way to save money, because commodities prices fluctuate day-to-day throughout the year. It has to do with changing supply, changing demand, and changing investment positions.

eCash as a Reformed Gift Card: The Gasoline Futures Model
The gift card system is broken.
It’s centralized, non-interoperable, opaque, expiration-prone, and locked to corporate silos. It's a ledger of IOUs that relies on trust in companies that profit from breakage—cards never redeemed, balances never used. And it’s not money. It’s a trap.
Now reimagine that system—with eCash.
Instead of a locked-balance Visa card or proprietary app credit, consider this: a co-op gas station issues eCash-denominated gallons of fuel. Not dollars. Not points. Gallons. Redeemable any time, no account required.
A member pre-buys 100 gallons at $3.00 when prices are low. They receive a digital bearer token—Cashu eCash—that represents actual future delivery of fuel, not a price. Not a voucher. Not a discount. A physical unit: one gallon of gasoline.
No Lightning conversion. No cross-mint transfer. These tokens are siloed—but deliberately so. Think of them as private commodity scrip, issued by the co-op itself. Valid only at their pumps. Direct issuance. Direct redemption. The mint is the merchant.
Peer-to-peer fungibility emerges. Members trade gallons among themselves. Someone moves. Someone sells their truck. They offload their 80 gallons to another member. No need to involve the co-op. The co-op doesn’t need to know or care. The mint only verifies the validity of the tokens. That’s it.
And yes: wallet software already supports multiple denominations. You can define “gallon” as a unit just as easily as a satoshi. You can store 37.225 gallons as bearer tokens. You can send it to the pump like cash. And you can get change.
Example: A user sends 30 gallons to the pump. The pump dispenses 25.5. It returns 4.5 gallons to the wallet, over Nostr Wallet Connect (NWC), instantly. No meter misread. No float. No billing cycle. The transaction is closed the moment the nozzle clicks.
Now add expiration.
Let’s say futures are only valid for 12 months. After that, the tokens become invalid for pump redemption. But they don’t become worthless. They’re expired, not extinct.
The wallet marks the token as expired. The user can then:
1. Redeem it for dollars or Bitcoin (manual off-chain flow, issued by the co-op).
2. Convert to a new futures contract at the updated market price.
Case: You bought 50 gallons at $3.00 = $150. A year later, gas is $3.50. You redeem the expired tokens. The co-op mints 42.857 new gallons at the $3.50 rate. You lost no value, just volume. Your price exposure is clear, predictable, and fair.
All of this could be automated. The pump detects expired tokens. It offers to convert them on the spot. No call center. No clerks. No confusion. Just a simple rule: expired tokens redeem at current price for original value.
This system isn't theoretical.
Every building block exists:
– Cashu for eCash minting
– NWC for real-time wallet interaction
– Lightning for initial purchases
– Embedded systems for pump control
– Non-dollar denominations for token units
We don’t need better gift cards. We need a commodity-backed bearer asset system that aligns incentives, eliminates credit risk, and puts redemption in the hands of machines, not people.
eCash isn't just private money. It's programmable futures.
And this is what a decentralized, peer-aligned, frictionless futures market looks like—on your phone, at the pump, with no one in between.

Before microtransactions, there was debt.
Every service - power, gas, water, software - required someone to go first. Either the user prepaid, and the provider carried the liability of owed service, or the provider fronted the cost, and the user carried owed money. That was the model. Always a ledger. Always a risk.
Because value couldn’t move fast enough.
Settlement took time. Minimums imposed by Visa, PayPal, Stripe. Transaction fees too large to justify anything smaller than a bill. So we made bills. We made accounts. We made user IDs. We made friction.
Now: we don’t have to.
A connected embedded system, hard-wired to a wallet. No account. No middleman. Just a connection. Lightning or eCash. Instant settlement. Micro to the point of indivisibility.
A kilowatt-hour? Sold per watt. Propane? Per cubic meter. Per fraction of a cubic meter, aligned to a thousandth of a satoshi - so even rounding errors vanish into the noise floor.
The device itself enforces payment. The wallet itself sets the budget. No invoice. No overdue. No data broker scraping your usage pattern to sell you back your own profile.
The user sets the cap: "Only pay for 80% of peak daily consumption. Never go over 50 cents per hour. Cut service if the wallet hits zero." Fine-grained control. Real limits. Automated enforcement. Budgeting becomes mechanical. Predictable. Cash-based.
This isn’t utopian. It’s executable.
No service rep. No billing system. No call center. Just a box on your wall that meters fuel and speaks Lightning.
For the provider: zero bad debt. Zero collections. Minimal fraud exposure. Hardware becomes the enforcement boundary.
For the user: no late fees. No lock-in. No overspend. Just the comfort you pay for, in exactly the amount you choose, no more.
The business model shifts. Debt gets deleted. Trust gets automated. Risk becomes a configuration setting.
And the whole system runs under your wallet’s authority - not theirs.

2024-10-07 16:23:42 GMT

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a widely used surfactant and detergent. It's created through a chemical process that involves the reaction of lauryl alcohol (a fatty alcohol derived from coconut oil or palm kernel oil) with sulfuric acid and then neutralization with sodium hydroxide. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how SLS is made:
Step-by-Step Process:
1. Deriving Lauryl Alcohol:
Lauryl alcohol (dodecanol) is a fatty alcohol with a 12-carbon chain. It is derived from either natural sources like coconut oil or palm kernel oil or synthesized from petrochemicals.
Lauryl alcohol is the starting point for producing sodium lauryl sulfate because it provides the hydrophobic (water-repelling) tail needed for the surfactant molecule.
2. Sulfation of Lauryl Alcohol:
In this step, sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) is added to lauryl alcohol. This process is called sulfation and converts the lauryl alcohol into lauryl sulfate (specifically, lauryl hydrogen sulfate), an intermediate product. This step introduces a sulfate group (-SO₄) to the lauryl alcohol.
The reaction can be written as:
\text{Lauryl alcohol} + \text{Sulfuric acid} \rightarrow \text{Lauryl hydrogen sulfate} + \text{Water}
3. Neutralization with Sodium Hydroxide:
In the final step, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is added to the lauryl hydrogen sulfate to neutralize it, converting it into sodium lauryl sulfate.
This step ensures the molecule becomes the sodium salt form, which is the active surfactant.
The reaction is:
\text{Lauryl hydrogen sulfate} + \text{Sodium hydroxide} \rightarrow \text{Sodium lauryl sulfate} + \text{Water}
Final Product: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
The result is sodium lauryl sulfate, a compound with a hydrophobic tail (from the lauryl group) and a hydrophilic (water-attracting) head from the sulfate group. This structure allows SLS to act as a surfactant, reducing surface tension in water and helping to remove oils and dirt.
Uses of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate:
SLS is commonly found in soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, and other personal care and cleaning products due to its foaming and cleansing properties. It is also used in industrial cleaning products and sometimes as an emulsifier in cosmetics.
Environmental and Health Considerations:
While SLS is highly effective as a cleaning agent, it has been associated with skin irritation in some individuals, particularly at high concentrations. It is also subject to scrutiny for its environmental impact, as it can be harmful to aquatic life if not properly treated in wastewater.
In summary, sodium lauryl sulfate is created through the sulfation of lauryl alcohol with sulfuric acid, followed by neutralization with sodium hydroxide, resulting in a surfactant used widely in cleaning and personal care products.
How to make Laurel Alcohol
Lauryl alcohol (also known as dodecanol) is a fatty alcohol with a 12-carbon chain that is commonly used in the production of surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Lauryl alcohol can be produced through several methods, but two of the most common are:
1. From Natural Sources (Vegetable Oils)
Lauryl alcohol is often derived from natural oils like coconut oil or palm kernel oil, which are rich in fatty acids, particularly lauric acid. Here’s how the production works from these natural sources:
Steps:
1. Extraction of Lauric Acid:
Coconut oil or palm kernel oil is subjected to a process called fractionation or hydrolysis to separate the individual fatty acids.
Lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid with a 12-carbon chain, is the main component needed to make lauryl alcohol.
2. Hydrogenation of Lauric Acid:
Lauric acid (C₁₂H₂₄O₂) is then hydrogenated to produce lauryl alcohol (C₁₂H₂₆O). This process involves adding hydrogen to the carboxyl group (-COOH) of the lauric acid, converting it into the corresponding alcohol (-OH group).
The reaction typically occurs at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of a nickel or palladium catalyst.
The chemical reaction can be written as:
\text{Lauric Acid} + \text{H₂} \rightarrow \text{Lauryl Alcohol} + \text{Water}
2. From Petrochemical Sources (Ethylene Oligomerization)
In addition to natural sources, lauryl alcohol can also be synthesized from petrochemical precursors through a process called ethylene oligomerization, which involves converting ethylene gas (derived from crude oil) into fatty alcohols.
Steps:
1. Oligomerization of Ethylene:
Ethylene gas (C₂H₄) undergoes a process where molecules of ethylene are combined to form longer-chain hydrocarbons.
Using specific catalysts, ethylene can be converted into 1-dodecene, a 12-carbon hydrocarbon (C₁₂H₂₄).
2. Hydroformylation:
1-dodecene is then subjected to hydroformylation, where it reacts with carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂) to add a formyl group (-CHO) to the hydrocarbon chain, converting it into dodecanal (a 12-carbon aldehyde).
The reaction typically takes place in the presence of a cobalt or rhodium catalyst.
3. Hydrogenation of Dodecanal:
Finally, dodecanal is hydrogenated to convert the aldehyde group (-CHO) into an alcohol (-OH), forming lauryl alcohol (dodecanol).
The reaction is similar to the hydrogenation of lauric acid in the natural process.
Environmental and Sustainability Considerations:
Natural Process: Producing lauryl alcohol from natural oils like coconut or palm kernel oil is seen as more environmentally friendly and renewable compared to the petrochemical route. However, concerns about deforestation and the environmental impact of palm oil production have led to a focus on sustainable sourcing.
Petrochemical Process: While potentially cheaper on a large scale, the petrochemical route relies on non-renewable resources (crude oil) and has a higher carbon footprint due to the use of fossil fuels.
Summary:
Lauryl alcohol can be produced either by hydrogenating lauric acid extracted from natural oils (like coconut or palm kernel oil) or by oligomerizing ethylene in a petrochemical process. Both methods result in lauryl alcohol, a 12-carbon fatty alcohol, which is used extensively in surfactants, personal care products, and detergents.

I received some of the pine tar soap from @nprofile…g9zp a few days ago. Not only does it work better than the overpriced zum soap, it also cleared up some tinea, and my wife likes the scent. Amazing!

Regarding the proposed TikTok ban in congress: to give more power to the president does not mean he will only exercise it with his full attention, rather it means he will give this new power to his administrative machine and defer his authority to people that have time to "regulate" speech. I see this move as nothing more than formalizing exactly what the government did through apple, google, facebook and twitter with shadowbanning and deplatforming. If the threat is the government can shut down a platform with the teeth of law for allowing people to talk that aren't towing the government agenda, then the platforms like X/Twitter will have no choice but censor in a coordinated way like they did for Alex Jones, the sitting 45th president and many others.
This is certainly a trojan horse. Problem - reaction - solution. The problem is real, the reaction is engineered by the media, IC and democrats in power, but the solution they are presenting is against the interests of the American people and grows the power of the administrative state.

Mind you, under this system, what if the sheriff decides to take out loans on behalf of the people he polices, then he collects "taxes" to pay the interest because "it's for the common good"?
This is what #bitcoin fixes.

Fiat is backed by banks collecting debt in conjunction with courts and the sheriff. Its basic contract law, just like any other agreement.

If I need to save enough money to pay for an entire house, and it takes me 20 years to do so, that is 20 years of needing to pay the same yearly expense for housing with rent on property that I do not own. This means the demand for that house is deferred by 20 years.
If I take a 30 year loan for the house, now I have shifted the demand for a new single-family dwelling forward 20 years and my quality of life, mental well-being, and productivity has raised significantly over those same 20 years.
Is this an analogy to government debt? No, of course not.
With expansion of government spending is only further theft, destruction and oppression. Government spending only goes to public sector activities; of which, by definition, do not contribute to GDP but increase unbounded tyrrany over the globe.
