The new German #socialmedia platform wedium started it's beta access this week. It sees itself as an European alternative to the big tech social media platforms, specifically since the Trump administration took over last year, and stands against hate speech.
To secure that, you have to identify with your passport.
Ah, and they are closed source.
Why not federate? Because Trump used Mastodon's code for Truth Social.
So it's a walled-garden with ID check.
What a joke.

So, I started to volunteer in our local community centre to help (mostly) elder people with their computer and smartphone problems.
It's fascinating. We have people there up to their 90s and they are all every open for change.
We remove ad ID's from phones, change default browsers, switch from MS Office to #Libreoffice.
And for next time I already have a date with an elder lady to switch her old Windows 10 laptop to Linux Mint.
And she is not the only one!
What a time to be alive.

It's from the Reeperbahn, Germany's most famous red light and party district. It also housed Germany's smallest police district with just a couple of streets. And there are a lot of clan wars going on (more or less openly to the public).
So, yes, it's needed. And yes, those signs doesn't make any difference. :D

I am currently experimenting with my use of #socialmedia. I have #uninstalled all the social media apps from my phone and am forcing myself to use the web version of these services instead. I already know it's a lot less addictive and I'm really excited to see how this will change my day-to-day use of my #smartphone. So far, I have picked up my phone 3 times during a microsecond of #boredom and put it down with a smile because there is nothing on it to distract me. Take that subconscious!

@npub12ty…vnqc I don't think it's unfinished at all. I love how well it is made and would love my friends (and clients) to move to pixelfed as well. It's such a pleasant experience to not have to struggle with big tech enshittified algorithms. There are 1-2 UI /UX things that could make the app and web interface an even rounder experience, but I'm sure they will be done at some point. I love how transparent you are with the development. #gopixelfed
