It's not 2%, it's probably closer to 30% but you don't see them because they're spread out across different ideologies. You have to add up the wignats, libertarians, antifa left, open source developers, crypto community, etc. Internet shutdowns are a problem for ALL of them, so a lot of people would activate.
And then on regime stability, their risk is not some kind of popular uprising (those really don't exist), their risk is that someone like Elon might say "hey, you know what? I could become king" and then all of the sudden shit goes kinetic when the day before there was absolutely no sign whatsoever that anything like this might happen.
Because OF COURSE, anyone who might consider planning a coup d'etat will swear up and down that they would never never never never never even so much as daydream of such an idea - until one moment they're holding a rifle to your head...

IT'S OUT, maybe my biggest blog post to date.
Ever since the recording industry capitulated ending the P2P War, internet freedom has been SO GOOD that research into decentralized networking has practically stalled. Throughout the Western World, you can just stand up a website and post almost anything.
And because of that, nobody has been particularly motivated to move off of centralized ICANN DNS, IPv4, and x509 Certificate Authorities.
Now, governments are thinking about changing that. And while the apocalyptic amount of force it would take to actually end the open internet is almost certainly beyond them, the force it would take to end the era of bad centralized protocols could almost be applied by accident.

KW per cm2 would be fine. I know intuitively what is an inch, a pound, a KG and a cm, but I do not know what is normal atmospheric pressure (except I know as a trivia question that it's 15ish PSI). It's like a fish doesn't know what it is to be wet.
Pressure matters when it pushes on something, so you want to know what will be the force based on the size of the something...

The problem as defined is that culture is drifting off a cliff - evidenced by the falling birth rate, but also many other things. There's one big mono-culture and it's failing.

Batteries and solar are two emerging technologies which have exactly this kind of behavior - which is why I'm very bullish on the future of these technologies.
I acknowledge the problems, and particularly that geothermal and nuclear are WAY BETTER from first principles. But the thing is, there's insane amounts of R&D going into solar and batteries, so they're evolving FAST, while nuclear and geothermal have relatively little R&D and so they're stuck in the doldrums (for now).

Flash memory invented in 1984.
This is a great example of a technology with a slow innovation curve, but one that would eventually come to replace a lot of other things.
If you were smart, you would have known that (for example) tape based video cameras were going to be disrupted when flash memory hits enough density.
These things are tricky to think about because in many cases the growth curve is exponential, so something goes from "few kilobyte Nintendo cartridge" to "multi-terabyte SSD on a stick" in the matter of 4 decades.
These things are important to see and keep an eye on, because they are sitting there in plane sight, but most people don't pay attention - and they change how the future will look.

Wild that literally nobody makes these things anymore.
20 years ago they were everywhere, $100.
Now there's no factories left. All of the high voltage electronics are kind of bespoke and there aren't really supply chains for them anymore, but you COULD make them again.
The real kicker is the tube, the color mask and phosphor coating is a disaster. And what's more, the machines that made them are now archaic. Even if you were able to get one, keeping it maintained and working properly is a skill unto itself. Generally production engineers will always build new lines using only current era (CNC) machines for which the spare parts and knowhow are widely available.
This is an important little lesson that technological capabilities are not to be taken for granted. 20 years is long enough for a technology to really basically just vanish and once it's gone, you would need to go through a whole new R&D process if you ever wanted to bring it back.

Oh, this is very interesting.
I was thinking about monkeypox today, how it happened right in the middle of the covid pandemic and it threw the pandemic machine off balance by introducing another virus which threatened one of The King's Protected Classes.
And it started with a bunch of monkeys escaping a truck that was overturned (kind of a buried news item)...
I have a feeling it might have been sort of an anti-covid team which was striking back against the covid team - because the timing and how it threw the media off balance BADLY.
Then of course what really ended covid was Russia invading Ukraine.

Finally watched the video. They're subtweeting BYD pretty hard, I don't think that's proven yet at all.
I think companies like Ford and Chrysler are not being serious about serving their customers, so BYD's sub-10k offerings might be trash and they might be quite decent for the money.
Also the notion that the only reason these are cheap is China govt subsidies is not really true. Dacia sells sub-10k vehicles in Europe and they're not "good", but they're are decent enough that taxi companies use them.
The idea that a car starts at 30k is an American phenomenon.

Yeah, this is a real problem, and I'm not sure there's any real incentive to stop it.
IMO it's not specifically the fault of EVs, but rather that as reliability improves, people stop caring about repairability. Even back in the 80s when they started cramming everything under the hood, timing chains that are ~impossible to service, etc.
You might imagine that delivery companies, taxi companies, cop fleets, etc will insist on buying cars they can service - but even for them, if the vehicle lasts 10 years without trouble, they might just not care.
Problem is, new car buyers are stupid, and they trade in every 5 years or so, so reliability after the first decade is not their problem. Maybe if the used market commands 20% of the car's initial cost, that matters, but if the car company can cut cost by 20% by making it impossible to maintain, it's a wash. And the company could also buy back used cars to support the market - even though they're junk.
For the car culture this is hell. You can put together an LS rig, and you can put together a rig on top of a commodity electric chassis, but in either case this is something you have to completely build yourself. Seems like there's just nothing comparable to Fox Body or Camaro ecosystem anymore...

But still, tanked hydrogen is just not that great a deal.
You burn about 50kWh to fill a 50 liter tank.
You get back about 20kWh and only 10kWh of that is actual electricity.
If that tank costs you 100€ (low end), well, you can store 10kWh in a battery for about 700€ (assuming 2000€ 32kWh battery).
Small savings, big energy loss, expensive up-front costs (fuel cell, compressor, pipes).

Right, you store at about 150 PSI / 10 bar. Same as compressed air, so you can use a compressed air or propane tank if you fill the tank with the binding material.
The problem is, the binding material is not cheap, and you still have to pay for the tank, and high pressure tanks are just not that expensive.

There's a number of things that bind H2 - including a lot that are not precious metals. I didn't drill into them much because they don't really outperform tanks from a price perspective.
For example https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Safest-and-Most-Efficient-Solid-Hydrogen_1601558386946.html HyReachX Titanium-Manganese alloy is selling at 24€ per KG and it can bind about 1.5% H2 by weight (15g / KG).
15g is 1 liter at 200 bar. So if you spend 1200€ you have enough alloy to store the equivalent of 50 liters at 200 bar. But a 200 bar 50 liter steel tank is 100-500€ (depending on who you ask).

Was running some ideas w/ ChatGPT to try to find a solution that would work for storing excess energy from solar generation.
I was playing with the idea of having about 20 MWh of excess generation per year. Around 100kWh per day on good days.
Selling to the grid requires annoying permits and (depending on where) they don't pay well at all.
Batteries are like 1k€ per 10kwh, so they're good for a day or two of buffer storage, but not more.
Storing energy in water doesn't really work, you need insane amounts of water to store meaningful energy. Phase change materials like paraffin wax store more because it's latent heat of melting, but the size is still insane.
If you're thinking about storing heat, you probably want reversible chemical reactions, such as quicklime + water, or epsom salt + water which release a lot of heat, and then you recharge them by dehydrating them with heat. Epsom salt is probably the most interesting, it stores 190 kWh per ton and you can recharge it at 50-100C if you do so under vacuum. You can get close to these numbers using an off-the-shelf heat pump. But still, 20MWh equates to 100 tons of material, which is large and expensive.
An energy storage solution which is dumb NOT to pursue is vacuum drying. You can build a vacuum chamber and put lumber, garden produce, wood chips & things you want to burn, and you pull a vacuum in the chamber then use a heat pump to push heat into the chamber which causes the water to boil. The smart thing to do is run a pipe from the chamber to a condenser which is kept in cold water (pond, stream, swimming pool, etc) and because it's cooler than the chamber, it will condense out the water that is being vaporized from the stuff you're drying. This means you don't need to keep adding vacuum, just heat.
Tech Ingredients did this exact setup, except for vacuum distillation of wine. Once the vacuum is set, you don't need to add vacuum, just heat. And you only need to keep the hot side hotter than the cold side, and the reaction will continue to work.

So they're not asking for things with the idea that it's gonna be realistic. Oh, that's BS, they were always gonna "leave the dollar", except that they don't because they can't. So instead they write angry blog posts on Zerohedge about how the dollar is about to collapse.
I have no illusions that the USD system is aging out, but there's no way another fiat system will be able to get enough traction to replace it. Bitcoin actually has the best chance out of anything, but no country wants Bitcoin standard because it demolishes their ability to borrow (print) endlessly, so everyone is basically stuck with the USD, and they just grumble because that's all they can do.

Historical precedent shows that old people don't adapt that well, but next generation does. In 1920s biggest single job was farmer, now farmers are almost non-existent though there is more farming happening than ever. How did people in the 20th century learn how to do things other than farming? They just did...
Currently, everyone with a successful youtube channel is already succeeding at what I said. Even though the whole world is your competitor, you need not despair because the whole world is also your customer, so finding a niche is not as hard as it seems...

Hyper-specialization. Every career is based on being the best in the world at some fabulously narrow niche ability. Through automation, the fruits of your labor are enjoyed by everyone on earth.
This is already true of software developers, actors and musicians, their work is copyable and thus usable by everyone on earth. So survival is based on carving out a niche where you shine. More things become possible to copy => more people fall into this category.

Movie idea:
A world where civil rights has been taken to it's logical conclusion. A society where blacks are celebrated as demi-gods, but are never actually taught to read and write.
Race & IQ is not relevant to the story, the point is that in this world, any white teacher who gives a black student a bad grade risks a career-ending racism investigation - so teachers have concluded that it's safest to just always give black kids A's, even if they barely show up to class and clearly have no comprehension of the material. Black kids learn early that they can do what they want without consequence, and from then on they don't learn much else.
In the workplace, corporations carve out fake jobs so they can hire enough blacks to manage the risk of a hiring discrimination investigation. "Racism" fills the role of the counter-revolutionary to the communists, or The Brotherhood (1984). Everyone is a suspect.
The corporate blacks are the product of a school system where it's illegal to teach them, they have absolutely no idea what is going on, but they occasionally say some empty buzzwordy catchphrase in a meeting - which is then studied and discussed at length to "understand the genius" of what they said. In work as in school, giving a black person a bad evaluation risks a life-ruining investigation, so a black employee has about same expectations as an office cat.
The fact that blacks are never actually educated and are treated as royal pets is "the emperor has no clothes". Something everyone kind of knows, but nobody can say out loud for fear of personal ruin.

I'm going to argue that Satoshi didn't fully understand what he created. He didn't really know what to do about block sizes and imagined that they would grow over time in order that everyone can transact on the main chain. Later on people realized that this vision can never possibly scale because even with multi-gigabyte blocks, there would still not be enough transaction space for the whole world - and multi-gigabyte blocks would surely constrain BTC to a handful of nodes on super high bandwidth links.
I think The Bitcoin Standard presents a much more developed vision of what BTC should become.

These days BTC is used for fast cross-border settlement which bypasses the traditional forex market. If you need to get €10mn from Germany to Argentina, it's often more efficient to buy up BTC on a European exchange and then sell it on an Argentine exchange rather than dealing with traditional forex (which is going to do EUR->USD->ARS anyway)

If Trump sends Scott Bessent to the bond markets to get 2 trillion dollars overnight, that's gonna push interest over 10% and the effect on the financial system will be reminiscent of 2008.
