Thank you. I appreciate your offer. About to start the process now.

This week I'm going to migrate my account from here on mastodon.social to writing.exchange. Been putting this task off for months because it's daunting, the partial brain damage I sustained some years ago making the learning and application of new software etc quite problematic and sometimes bloody upsetting. But it's time for me to make this jump, so here goes....

#WritingCommunity
#Solarpunk
#Hopepunk
Can anyone suggest a way that I might be making a mistake in the idea for my next book? Here it is.
200 years after a global catastrophic failure of humanity's fossil-fuelled societies, a small community of shipbuilders and sailors starts exploring oceanic trade with a big wooden cargo ship. No engines or electric motors. Sails only is their technological level. No motors or batteries makes sense to me, but do you think it might be a mistake?
Thanks.

#WordWeavers 1st Feb 2026. Who is your most despicable character and how do you feel about them?
The sinister, narcissistic, all powerful antagonist in my first novel, Gifted. He was a piece of shit, similar in many respects to the adult sexual and emotional abuser in my childhood, whose power over his victims was like strong magic. They're both dead now. They are nothing to me. Writing Gifted was my unintentional self-therapy. It involved shadow work, and was my introduction to that practice.

The free world was always only an invention, meaningless except for the USA selling itself as the leader of it.

#WordWeavers 13th August 2025. On a scale from 1 to 10, how safe is your world?
In 1933 England, in the months following the Reichstag fire, my characters are watching events in Germany, and sharing memories of the Great War in disbelief that it's so dangerously likely to happen again.

#ScribesAndMakers 5th August 2025. What's the hardest thing about marketing?

When relocating a snail, do so by gently pushing him forward or gently tapping on his hut, so that he withdraws himself into it. If you pull on it and you feel resistance, the membrane that connects him to his house tears. It makes him curl and contract in terrible pain and it sentences him to death within days.
A snail's life expectancy is 3 to 10 years depending on the species.

Yes, very telling. Since I came home from sea, I've put my roots down in the West Country, which is a lovely land to live upon. Voting? They yo-yo between blue and red tories, so bollocks to that. I vote green or independent socialist, whoever is on the ballot sheet. If I were in Brighton I'd be happy to vote green, and I think you and I would be 3D friends. In my perfect world, I would live in Ireland. Next time around I believe I will.

#Hygge is integral to my pagan practice. I write about it in several of my novels - which are my activism - as well as living it in my daily life. My version of hygge is tied with the philosophy that to be a #witch is to be political. I can't be comfortable and content when a tyrannical regime is deliberately harming innocent people. So I live with the aim of hygge, and can achieve it in small comfortable ways in my home and heart while maintaining it as a target in the wider world.

Thank you for giving this a name. When I'm asked what themes tend to repeat in my novels, I always say 'found family'. And it's true, but not the only truth. There is also this, and now you've given me 'humans gonna human' to name it.

This is my natural sleeping pattern, a first sleep from about 11pm to about 2am, an awake time until about 4am when I often work mentally on whatever book I'm writing, then a second sleep until between 7 and 8am when my morning starts. I've long thought of it as a pre-industrial revolution pattern. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20220107-the-lost-medieval-habit-of-biphasic-sleep

201 journalists have been killed in Gaza. This is more than any other conflict in the world's entire history. They are being killed by the Occupation army of Israel supported by the UK and USA, killed for reporting war crimes.
When the world finally brings the politicians and military of Israel to justice, those of the UK and USA will be alongside them in the dock. When the people of Israel realise how wrong they have been, the people of UK and USA will realise how wrong we have been too.

“Plants and animals don’t fight the winter; they don’t pretend it’s not happening and attempt to carry on living the same lives that they lived in the summer. They prepare. They adapt. They perform extraordinary acts of metamorphosis to get them through. Winter is a time of withdrawing from the world.... Winter is not the death of the life cycle, but its crucible.”

#GreenFriday initiative encourages conscious consumerism during the shopping frenzy associated with Black Friday. It is a counter to the “shop until you drop” mentality of Black Friday & takes place on the same date, 29th November. Participating in this year’s Green Friday is simple: purchase mindfully and sustainably from your local brands.
Is this something you'll be considering doing this year? What are you switching to or where are you buying your greener/locally sourced products from?

No concern in any of these phone conversations about the genocide being waged this past year in Gaza? That would confirm the suspicions of many of us outside of the USA.

I think the worst threat to the world, including to America, is America.

2024-10-10 20:23:43 GMT

I'm not American, but if I were I wouldn't join the Democrats because of their support for the genocide in Gaza. The despicable tory-fication of the Labour Party here in the UK shows what happens when progressives hold their noses and vote for the less bad option in a two-party system. My solution is to burn the system to the ground.
