@nprofile…jnnp There was something fundamentally wrong when a person could become a billionnaire. There aren't even words to describe a world in which one person can amass a thousand times such an obscene level of wealth.

@nprofile…x9tq Someone posted an article a few days ago that featured the same graph. It also highlighted a massive flaw in the representation. What looks like losses from Labour to Reform is actually an artefact of the FPTP system, and it represents Reform's ability to mobilise people who wouldn't have voted otherwise. Labour's losses, allegedly, are mainly to the Greens. I can't find the article now, sorry.

@nprofile…zlca For sure, but there's still a person at the end of all that symbolism, so I'm happy for them.
Now, on the other hand.... how many Iranians were killed to save that one person... 🤔

2026-04-05 12:13:58 GMT

Happy for the airman who was rescued and especially their family, but I wonder how much it cost?
If they can justify spending that much on saving one person, they could certainly justify saving millions at a fraction of the cost per person through better health care and social safety nets for the weak and vulnerable.
And this is equally true for us here in the EU.
And I'm saying this as someone who accepts that we need to spend serious money on defence.

@nprofile…ds9n @nprofile…x9tq This is the one saving grace in the UK's version of their FPTP system. In the UK, "hung" parliaments are at least possible. The FPTP system makes them a lot less common, but it can happen.
So if the Greens find themselves in a "Kingmaker" position, there is one thing they must insist on: a hard commitment from their coalition partner to replace the FPTP voting system with something like PR-STV or vanilla PR. No coalition without it. Period.

@nprofile…vppf @nprofile…x9tq @nprofile…yndx I think you are right in that simply "rejoining" won't be an option. Before that happens I can imagine "Reform" getting into power and making such an unholy mess of things that Scotland finally picks up the gumption to leave the UK and cease being England's vassal state.
If that doesn't happen I see Labour convincing itself that an EEA or EFTA "arrangement" without the advantages that Switzerland or Norway have can be sold as "but we are not rejoining".

@nprofile…hzyj The UK needs to realise that the EU will never simply offer it a buffet to choose from what it likes. A customs union for goods and services is inextricably linked with freedom to travel. You can't have one without the other. #Nature is brutal. In the last few days I've noticed caterpillars crawling up our walls and chrysales appear. Still, though. After seeing more than 5 #caterpillars crawl up the wall I only see one new chrysalis. Today I discovered why. As the caterpillars crawl up the wall they are attacked by wasps. They try to avoid being stung by dropping down but then they're vulnerable to more attacks. The #wasps then eat them. Still, a few made it and wasps are not interested in the chrysales.

I'm pretty sure #Iran wouldn't waste its time sending construction equipment to #fordo if the site had actually been "completely obliterated".

2025-06-26 21:36:11 GMT

#Israel 's behaviour has been utterly reprehensible and the way it has been conducting its campaign in Gaza with little regard for civilian life is deplorable.
But I've seen people cheer on #Iran in the recent shooting match.

I suspect that one could be considered "right" from either perspective. Yes, #Fordo and other sites were "obliterated", but I would also expect #Iran to be able to, if left undisturbed, to rebuild such capabilities in a LOT less than "decades". They could not, however, do this without showing clear signs of activity in satellite imagery etc. If they won't cooperate with nuclear watchdogs now, the USA must be willing and able to strike again. Not what I want to see, but a realistic assessment.

@nprofile…60lz exactly the point I've been making myself. At best, if I am as kind as I can be, they must have deluded themselves that serving business interests, lobbyists, etc is going to be "better" for their voters. What is lacking is something akin to the "scientific method". If the hypothesis is that my political behaviour will benefit voters, voters should report feeling better off as a result. They don't, but politicians seem unable to draw the right conclusions from that: it's not working

@nprofile…fa4k I have no real idea but if I had to guess I'd imagine that the "charge formation" continues even as the object starts rotating and that there's some reason why the initial asymmetry causes this to continue in some kind of feedback loop that keeps the asymmetric charge distribution as it was originally established?

@nprofile…60lz @nprofile…amn9 "The right" most definitely is not a monolith, but people on "the right" seem to be able to set aside ideological differences when striving to achieve a goal. They even seem to be able to cozy up to "useful idiots" on "the left" when they think they can use them.
People on "the left" on the other hand seem to have a nasty and stupid habit of refusing to engage with anyone they perceive as not as "ideologically pure" as themselves.
It's a problem we need to fix.

Rather than complaining about that reality, you know that there are real solutions. PR, Ranked Choice, etc. So let's talk about how you can make this happen in your country. #UK citizens face a similar dilemma, so let's hear from you guys, too. Yeah I'm an #ignostic and as such I'd have no problem with anyone calling me an #atheist but I reject any #ideology even if it's based on or if it embraces an atheistic or non religious world view.
Ideology is the problem. ANY ideology. Ideology is the rejection of the way the world really is in favour of how you believe the world should be.
Yes, of course, embrace points of view based on empathy and compassion but NEVER reject reality. That way lies madness.

Perhaps this has already been done?
One thing that worries me about #mastodon is that your account is at the mercy of the administrator of the server you're on. I know you can migrate your account but the previous server I was on simply went off the air without a warning one day.
Maybe there should be (or is there already?) an option to mirror one's #account on a #secondary server so that if your main or 2nd server disappears you still have the other?
Does that exist?
If not, could it?

@nprofile…60lz Mainstream churches became integral to society. Despite the abuses and belief in supernatural nonsense they are also part of the glue that keeps society together.
Rationality alone seems to be not enough for many. Apart from ideals and ideologies people seem to need beliefs in mystery and hope of something better after death.
Remove organised religion and those people turn to woo and lose their anchor in society. Perhaps with accountability religion is preferable to that?
