Last Notes npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…x9ps oh indeed, i'm 100% linux at home, have been for decades, and i've done contributions to wine/SDL/and many other projects to scratch my own itches over the years. I just find it kinda funny that the itch you scratched is fixing literally two of the most annoying daily issues I have to put up with on my work computers, and it's been a known bug to them for over 10 years. If anything it sounds like KDE cloned microsoft's implementation too closely, lol npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…x9ps I wish microsoft would fix these same issues in their own client, for my job I'm pretty much remoted into multiple machines all day from a windows client and screen freezing and not updating is something I hit daily (but annoyingly controls still going through, so if i click on something I can't see then re-open the client it will have actually registered that click and acted on it!), their screen resizing has a bug too where it locks size when you swap screens the window is on npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…wq0y that's how I do it, II reserve casing for functions, definitions, classes, namespaces, etc. It helps to visually distinguish at a glance. I use underscore separators if needed for variable names. specifically ALL CAPS + snake case: macro/definitions/namespaces (eg. #define MAX_PRECISION 0.01) all lower + snake case: variables, primitive typedefs (eg. fs::path default_config_path) PascalCase: classes, structures, enums (eg. class ConfigFile) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h I have absolutely no idea if this will work, but it should, quick and dirty to grab mip level 0 and convert it to png (didn't have a test file to try, just based off the bsp docs for goldsrc and the header in bspfile.h https://fuzzyspider.net/main/mip2png.tar.gz npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h oh! those are pretty easy, pretty sure you can just use trenchbroom to convert, otherwise could make a quick and dirty script, half-life stores mipmaps as a simple header indexing offsets to each level, with always 4 mip levels, then the palette. It's all 8 bit indexed. where did you find raw half-life textures? normally HL embeds them. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h mip files from what? I would assume they're probably mipmapped textures so it's likely a header and texture information? npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h I see a lot that say they do then you fire them up and the scenes have millions of polygons and are just using shaders to try to mimic the look (and getting it VERY wrong, lol).Lots of stuff too saying it's going for a N64 look then immediately the entire scene is repetitive trees with thousands of polygons each and just low res textures. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h honestly blender is absurdly over-complicated unless you're doing millions of polys sculpting intricate 3d shapes, I can toss together an entire level in netradiant or unrealed3 in a day, about the same amount of time it would take me to get the basic cube and all the windows set up correctly in blender :D npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h i just skip straight to melons and lanternfruit, if you grab the seaglide you can get them right near spawn. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5x8e honestly even for my own email server I don't even bother with thunderbird, it's too much of a pain in the ass, especially when roundcube is so much easier to set up and basically gives a "gmail but better" interface (at least in my opinion) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…pkyw @nprofile…5y0h the until-recently head of windows department is in the files as well, (and who knows how many others, it seems at the very least a lot of the leadership at microsoft knew epstein, but there's too many redactions to pin down any other names yet) plus bill and many of their island buddies are still invested into microsoft to the tune of billions each. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h I personally prefer the term "pedophile supporters" (though I guess that also applies to apple as well, so it's less specific) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…nz6q I said the same thing in 2006 back when major game releases used to get mac and linux native versions and you could buy cross platform office competitors off the shelf right next to ms office. If microsoft had received more than a slap on the wrist for all the illegal predatory pricing and other monopolistic practices that killed their competition and cross platform dev we could be living in a very different computing landscape right now. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…sftd hows support on arm chromebooks these days on most distros? (or has everything just kinda ingnored them and only touches the x86 ones?) They were pretty common early on and are super efficient, I have one with a pretty custom install that was...frankly, one of the hardest linux installs I've ever done. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…l70y yeah, one thing to remember (and what's difficult with maps like this) is that in MN almost the entire population lives in MSP, Rochester, Dulith, and St. Cloud, the rest of the state is open farmland and national/state forest with very little population. On that map the only one not orange is st cloud and that's unfortunately the product of jerrymandering (the city downtown with the college sits directly on the corner of FOUR counties/voting districts that included hundreds of miles) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…l70y I agree with the sentiment but...swing state? Do people think MN is a swing state? MN has the most consistent voting of democrats federally of any state, even including CA and NY https://cdn.masto.host/mastodongamedevplace/media_attachments/files/115/962/511/871/882/542/original/2024b039fedcf5fd.png npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h yes but with that big of a gap in versions on a direct upgrade the tables might not migrate cleanly, might be better to export and import into a new one. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h @nprofile…kcq6 Oh I haven't been on windows in decades, thankfully by 2015 pretty much everything generally worked on linux without issue (was pre-proton but well into the age of the higher level opengl compat layers in staging, though we didn't have dxvk yet), and even more it was kinda an interesting time where a lot of games started getting linux native versions (which unfortunately dried up post-proton) so a LOT of those games had linux native versions on launch! npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h @nprofile…kcq6 I bought a ps4 for bloodborne as well, and to this day it's pretty much still the only game I ever played on the ps4, lol Just absolutely nothing worth it on that system compared to it's predecessors, outside of the few sony funded games like that trapped on it all the ps4 seemed like it had was worse versions of PC games. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h I would imagine the main issue is for earlier systems porting was re-writing the game from scratch with the original as a reference, but the games themselves were still fairly small (originals only written by a few people in weeks to months). By the PS1/N64 era the systems were still so different they'd effectively need a full rewrite but now that would take years and a large team. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h On the NES I would spend hours and hours playing Dragon Warrior 2, Zelda 2, TMNT, and Wrecking Crew, On C64 I played a lot of the flight sims like ACE, and a RPG called legacy of the ancients, as well as "Dallas Quest". As DOS entered the mix early on I played a TON of the old sierra games (police quest/space quest mostly), then a bit later Magic Carpet, doom, Myst, Jurassic Park, and Ultima Underworld. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h searched for it since I'd never heard of it, saw it described as "hero shooter" and that's all I need to know that even at $40 it'll still nickle and dime you like a f2p game and still have the same brainless toxic loop of 2-3 levels of raging 12 year olds taking it over screaming in chat if you don't play their exact meta and that you're a loser for not buying the $50 limited time skins. Hero shooters are toxic hellscape and everyone who plays them basically plays the same one forever npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h you would think but the majority of people don't really play like that, most people will grind and stash/hoard to maximize an area before progressing, all the limits to try to contain that end up doing are causing frustration and a time sink, it really has to be fixed at a level before that. Since you say no crafting system breaking down loot wouldn't be useful so loot should be more meaningful when found, and if you do use a limited inventory have some incentive to bring it back. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h the problem is all this does is make the player work around it, take multiple trips, etc. One design ive seen work very well is to instead of having tons of loot and numbers to have weapons/armor/etc be distinct more in use and to keep the actual damage/protection values fairly flat, it makes gear more of a choice based on your playstyle than just "which number is bigger" and finding new gear while somewhat of a rarity it's a chance to try new things rather than just more loot for the bag npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h Kinda sounds like more the design of games like Fallout, specifically ones like New Vegas where everything had to be found or bought so you'd collect crap guns and re-sell them. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h You can even see it in the same series, Red Dwarf looked great for it's shoestring budget, when it got it's high price 4k "remaster" a bunch of VFX and sounds were added in post that not only look considerably worse than the original but often actively miss the joke and end up ruining it. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h yeah, obnoxious popups or waiting for the player to press keys with onscreen prompts is by FAR the worst way to tutorialize, it never helps you learn the feel or use of those actions while also getting in your way when you've figured them out. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h not really a fan of in-your-face tutorials like that tbh, I like it a lot better when games just kinda drip in mechanics over a short amount of time making you get used to them naturally, or at least the fromsfot way of doing it where the tutorial area is just a mini-starter dungeon that in most games you're supposed to fail at the boss with optional ground text with control hints while you reclaim your gear. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…nuu0 honestly it's mostly the sprite limit and lives/continues on the NES/SNES versions that make them easier, game slows down like crazy and makes it way easier to dodge, lol (That said I highly prefer the arcade versions, they're not THAT hard once you get into some good habits). The real sin imho is not including the Parodius games, i mean they included salamander/life force, why not the definitively superior offshoot. Also no Gradius 4? Wtf npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…5y0h on mac your options are either the small percentage of games on steam that support mac. Or lots of manual setup for each game, it IS possible with crossover and moltenvk to get a lot of games working but compatibility wise it's definitely the worst choice for gaming out of every major OS, even freeBSD is easier to game on. Note too that newer ARM based macs (and linux) while there is a translation layer available for x86_64 it's not quite as 1:1 as native wine performance-wise npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 Saturn was mostly known in the US for getting worse ports of PS1 games, Japan's Sega higher ups for some reason decided US customers wouldn't like the 2d games or experimental stuff so they decided to only localize the highest end 3d ones.that lagged like crazy and looked worse than their ps1 versions. Genesis/MD was HUGE in the us as well until around 96/97 (the big PS1/N64 release years). The botched saturn release basically killed the company. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 Talking just pre-SOTN CV3, CV4 were pretty big hits, CV2 also did quite well. Rondo didn't release in the US until the PSP collection but it was a hit in Japan. (I mean half of the SOTN sprites are ripped from it, lol). Bloodlines is also good but didn't sell that well. CV3 and 4 in particular were decently big hits in the US. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 you won't see much from saturn owners, saturn bombed bad in the US, it had a botched launch, was more expensive, and had no games at launch outside of virtua fighter. While panzer dragoon technically released and it's a masterpiece it's mostly in retrospect, nobody here really saw it until after the ps2 re-release. Saturn sold fewer total units in the US 1994-1998 than the genesis sold in 1995 alone. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 oh no doubt, I love the shit out of terranigma and clock tower, they are without a doubt some of the absolute best games on the system, just you'd be hard pressed to find someone who's actually played them, even here on mastodon, same with panzer dragoon, great game, absolutely flubbed release of both the console and game in the US and its' been rough to emulate until VERY recently. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 yeah, I'm just saying that from a console gaming perspective assuming someone isn't like me and has gone out of the way to collect and play games on a lot of consoles they missed growing up, the reason you may not be getting as many boosts/favs on the console games is that the ones you're posting are by and large ones that either weren't available at all in the US, and the ones that were were all SNES ones. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 @nprofile…8x78 lutris automatically uses proton, wine, wine-staging, native runners, etc, it's just a frontend to script the installers and containerize the install, I have a few thousand games installed in it. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 My list of 95 releases for console that I played would have been more of Phantasy Star 4, Toy Story, Comix Zone, and NBA Jam. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 I was pretty 50/50 PC/Console in 95, but while I've played every PC game you listed all the console games you listed are SNES (which I didn't have until the 2000's, and most of the games you listed while I do love them they were JP/EU only :D), PS1 (which was expensive and I never had one, I did later get some PS1 games for ps2 though), and Saturn (which, lets be fair, nobody had in the US) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…xlvy bandcamp is owned by epic, the company that still doesn't understand how to put a basic functional web store together and why people want things like shopping carts, universal refund policies, and reviews, so it's not terribly surprising. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…xlvy There are other smaller solutions out there, but yes as a major/central high traffic source it's a catch22 situation really, so long as people keep turning to spotify for discoverability, spotify will continue to be the ONLY avenue for discoverability, there has to be a gap where people turning away from spotify cause other services to gain traction, and the only way that happens is either in people stopping using it or them becoming so much worse artists prefer nothing over them. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…xlvy continuing to use spotify, even like this, actively pushes artists to continue to use spotify as that's where the traffic comes from. Not many people using the service are using it the way you are and buying the music outside, so doing it like that while it may be good intentioned pretty much only benefits spotify. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 @nprofile…agq6 personally, while there are a lot of games I love that came out in 97 (UO, Quake2, Fallout, MDK), you shouldn't forget the late DOS era in the early 90's! There were a lot of amazing games released at that time. Eye of the Beholder, Lands of lore, Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Doom, the kings quest and space quest series, DOTT, Master or Orion, MYST, Wing Commander series, Xwing/Tie figher series, dune2, magic carpet, etc. Late dos era was a goldmine! npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…e330 @nprofile…es7w I always kinda find it funny when I see people complaining that their deck only got 1-2 hours of battery life when they installed windows 10 on it and upscaled to 1080p...like...what did you expect? npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…es7w @nprofile…e330 I run most games at a LOWER resolution on my deck and use FSR to both increase battery life and make text more readable, I've yet to play a game where you could even tell at that screen size other than the higher fps and not needing to squint, lol. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…4m8e SuSE 9 and SuSE 10 were awesome, still have my CDs of both, the KDE3.0 line is what solidified me going 100% linux at home back then, it was just SO much better than windows. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 wouldn't even be hard, lol, "relevance" models are tiny, could easily run in 20MB of ram on a raspberry pi, just have to tune it to rank the probability of anything having a pun or play on words and flag anything over, say, 80% npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 most newer devices are EFI boot only, you don't actually need to do any special formatting, just the EFI boot in a folder and the files on the drive. Most boot isos are already set up properly, all you have to do is dd the image to a usb drive, no formatting needed. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…xlvy cpulimit isn't relative to other threads, it's relative to total processor availability and thread availability, setting to 25% with 1 cpu will limit a process to 1 cpu and 25% maximum utilization even if nothing is running. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…xlvy can't do detailed tweaking from the gui but you can alter priority in the xfce monitor. can use cpulimit for detailed task based throttling, i think some gui's support it npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…fnpd @nprofile…6gwq @nprofile…n4pf curious, does the mac toolchain auto-detect available threads? I wonder if it's just doing a more parallel compile by default, that would explain the large delta. I would also agree that since it's likely only building a basic "metal" backend and not a range of gles/vulkan/cuda/etc that can also be a big difference. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 oh definitely if you're talking actual retro graphics, I have a retrotink 4k that does the lagless scaling of stuff like that for me. But I actually develop everything in 320x200, it's the perfect modern retro resolution, it's perfectly divisible by 8, fast integer scales to 16:10 screen sizes (steam deck and most portables are 16:10, you get very slight edge bars on 16:9), but I can still use oldschool tools and systems (just intended for modern screens) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 honestly I like 16:10 screens so much more than 16:9, the extra vertical helps a lot, especially as you scale them up. I just wish they weren't so expensive and hard to get these days. 16:9 only became more popular because they're cheaper. I kinda get the reasoning if you're talking controller->mouse being kept separate but it makes NO sense to keep focus for keyboard and mouse separate, most people using a keyboard+mouse will be interchangeably using either depending on what works best, and often in menus with sliders/etc it's not uncommon to use both. Hiding focus and scrollbars are such BS modern UI annoyances. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 i mean it's definitely modern, always up minimap, obnoxious voice announcements, having to slowly reload and wait after every few shots, vomit inducing view bob and lean, about all it's missing is knee high walls to "take cover" by, regenerating health, and some yellow paint on the floor to show you the exact path through the level. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…3u5w cups has been pretty solid for a long time now! For pixel art just convert the gif to a h264 stream before uploading using high quality preset and nearest neighbor scaling if needed. As long as there's no audio stream mastodon treats it the same as a GIF but removes the 16MB limit. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…xlvy I'd recommend Pixelorama over Aseprite these days, it's mostly a clone of modern aseprite but merging in a bunch of QOL changes (and obviously using godot for UI so it's a bit more modern) where Ase stagnated quite a bit after they split from the GPL2 version and locked it down to a commercial license, it doesn't even do stuff like onion skinning very well. I've seen a lot of people seemingly more concerned with every single player being able to reach the end no matter skill/competency and sacrificing gameplay/exploation/atmosphere/etc in the process. It's led to a lot of games starting to involve more pointless time sinks rather than skill/knowledge checks. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: It's wild watching videos from younger streamers and reading the chats on them just how foreign sketching maps or taking notes is for them, not universal obviously but it seems like everyone just immediately jumps to a walthrough or guide than sits there baffled how anyone could possibly find their way through said dungeon/etc. It's annoying that every game now seems to have to include flashing objective markers, a full map, and yellow paint to show the intended path or people get lost... npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 in 90's games and earlier a unified release date wasn't really the norm even within the US, they shipped to stores and they stocked when they got them so you'll see the "release date" staggered over a few weeks to months depending on the store and where they're located, very likely ALL those release dates are correct...for the area they applied to. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 https://cdn.masto.host/mastodongamedevplace/media_attachments/files/115/429/326/702/098/556/original/bd20aafc3fa8fdcc.png npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…fnpd nouveau is the open source nvidia driver that supports very little of most card features and is known to be quite buggy with many cards, it's shipped because it's somewhat functional and doesn't require user intervention. I do wish we'd gotten the 01 version though, personally I wasn't a big fan of the changes in the new TF2, I preferred the old style and loadouts. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…xlvy eh, maybe it's just the...well lets just say way too many...hours of terraira speaking but houses are pretty simple, they just need to be big enough, fully enclosed in walls/doors (including having a back wall), be lit, and if you want NPCs to be able to live in it it needs a table and chair (placement doesn't matter), you can use the ? icon by the house list to test if it's valid. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 same, I just never really enjoyed any time spent in 2, it is and always was mostly a tech demo to me. But HL2....honestly aside from the graphics and phsyics felt kinda...open, and boring, it lost the puzzle level structure of 1 npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 @nprofile…d2xp if you want a REAL wild trip (though amiga is great, a lot of the games share ports on other western systems) check the japanese computers of that era (Sharp X68k, FM-Towns, PC-8801/9801, and the MSX/MSX2), they have a massive gaming library where you just can't find most of them on any other system, and graphics and sound were phenominal compared to DOS competitors at the time (I mean the X68k is literally a modified arcade board in a desktop case with a full OS, lol) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 what's wild is how GOOD the older versions of duke forever looked, both the quake2 based in 98 and the unreal engine version were WAY more interesting games than what we eventually got.(the unfinished 2001 version was leaked and patched to working btw, you can actually download and play it, it's VERY unfinished but what does exist is already better than...whatever the fuck that was they released in 2011) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 @nprofile…40k8 I think it depends on genre but yeah the late 90's (into the early 2000s) were great, especially for FPS games (Half-life, Quake 2-3, Elite force, UT, System Shock 2, TFC, etc), I think if you're talking RPGs, CRPGs or adventure games though the early 90's was the golden age (chrono trigger, phantasy star 4, mario RPG, earthbound, most of the best dragon quest/final fantasy games, eye of the beholder, lands of lore, kyrandia, etc) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…rtt8 @nprofile…06h7 it's also way easier than it sounds for people nearby (at least with the US phone system) to people who only grew up with cell, as you don't have to dial area code for local calls, and when landlines were more common there were only a handful of prefixes locally so in practice you only really had to know the last 4 digits to call someone, it wasn't until the mid 2000's that you started to see lots of people in the local area having completely different first 6 digits npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…gwm4 WCIII did a lot of the same a few years later but the originals were in starcraft, like DOTA was a AOS clone using warcraft units. The original turret defense games too, they used turrets and bunkers in set positions you could place and keep upgrading via script locations (a common variant was multiplayer too where it did kinda a kirby's avalanche type thing where kills on your side exponentially spawned on the other side.) npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…gwm4 I wonder if somehow, somewhere someone has a cache of all the old SC/BW custom maps, so many modern subgenres spawned from that game's easy to use but surprisingly powerful script/map editor. I haven't really seen that. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…gwm4 release dates being on a set day wasn't really a thing until later console generations and fairly modern PC releases, stores just sold them as they received copies and manufacturers shipped whenever they finished making a batch. Closest thing to a standard release date was when they ship to the manufacturer, but nobody would have have had the game to play at that time. Those dates likely pull from store ads when they received them, so they'd vary by store. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…dgjm @nprofile…t3wn weirdly shinobi kinda got me thinking of something in a related-but-not-exact game type that would translate well. Arcade platformers/shooters like metal slug share a lot with classic space shooters and one feature that could really carry back is the vehicles, like have different variants you could dock with on the fly as you found them that would give you a big health bar and better weapons, then you can manually ditch it for extra damage or before it blows up. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…t3wn yeah, i think there's definitely interesting ways to take the idea farther. I would have loved if you could keep recruiting smaller ones and they just had their own hp and would help you as long as they could, and honestly that would have been in-line with the story, an impossible fight where enemies joining your side is the only way to win. I honestly highly recommend that game if you never played it btw, it's not the best on the SNES but it's pretty up there, a solid A rank game. npub10fqdsdkvv9zcvvdnt8wcn2jsa85raanjhtpxs6nm73yzth4j000szp4pfz Raptor :gamedev: @nprofile…t3wn the video doesn't showcase it very well mostly because that one little ship is just notably OP but many of the smaller ships you can recruit with different attack patterns and abilities. It's not a huge change to the gameplay, they're basicaly just r-type bits with slightly different properties, but it really was a neat concept, would have been cool if they went further with it like having them stay with you like options in gradius.
