For 500 years Indigenous people have been told they don't use the land correctly. Religious people tell them they worship the wrong god, and secular people tell them they don't have agriculture or engineering.

I wanna echo Skuppr here, you have some reading to catch up on. The "Enlightenment" was many things and one of those things was an engine for enclosure of the commons at home and extraction and colonialism abroad.
A large justification for residential schools, dispossession of land, the "enfranchisement" process, and even today's paternalism justifying oil pipelines through unceded Indigenous land requires the logic of the enlightenment.

I had good teachers, I think. I just hope you are okay. Both of you are lovely people and I've seen through your posts how much you do for others.
And besides, guys like that piss me off. I've seen guys like that join wonderful orgs and turn them into their personal sand-boxes, alienating any number of folks not like them without even realizing it.
And I've had my own watershed moment with disability, so it pisses me off when disability is treated like the unwanted step-sibling of equal rights when it's integral to life.
I hope you have a really good day today and that your enemies all stub their toes or equivalent.

I had fun today but if I'm honest I'd have rather not have spent the small part of the day I did interacting with asshole dudes being the blandest most basic kind of asshole dudes that exist. Like. Sorry to those for whom it's a far more common occurence. I hope I gave some of you some laughs today at least. I know I had some chuckles from some of your reactions to the needless piles of tech dudes everywhere.

I wonder if woodpeckers know how loud they are. I learned somewhere their heads are basically designed like hammers with lots of stuff to keep their brains from jiggling too much and that stuff probably includes noise-cancelling headphones for them, but I still wonder if every once in a while the woodpecker feels a little guilty for waking everyone up when getting breakfast.

I could unravel and start again, but I think I wanna see it through to the end. I've got 2 hanks of this yarn, the original pattern calls for 1 hank, but this one's gonna be wiiiiiiiiide.

JT interviews Mitch: "When did you get out here?"
Mitch: I got here an hour ago, maybe a little before. I got off of work this morning I heard they had 6, 7 guys (nice) had a guy on the ground, that it was like an execution, and so I had to come out. It's our 1st amendment right to protest that!

2026-01-24 18:21:08 GMT

"Fuck ICE! ICE Out!" from the crowd.
There's anguish and anger in their voices.
JT: "There's a crowd of hundreds out here, maybe a thousand. I look down the side streets and see another crowd of protestors, and no doubt on the other side of this intersection at the centre (of the ICE murder) there are also protests."

(for the media. Protestors can talk all they want about whatever they want. Just most of *them* are saying stuff like "ICE Out" and whatnot, not "brr!" bc by and large Minnesotans, like many Canadians, can handle a cold snap or two)

2026-01-24 01:18:10 GMT

Maybe it's 'cause I'm Canadian but the "bravery" is in the citizens taking action against an arm of the fascist machine, not "braving" the cold, but that's impressive too, media.
(EDIT to add: not to downplay the cold. I *have* been outside in -20c and colder: it is serious, absolutely, major factor in preparing for something like this, just saying that maybe the cold isn't the most important angle?)

Where I live, called Nova Scotia but still Mi'kma'ki, before contact the people here moved seasonally from the coasts to the interiors, summer to winter. Each community had their own places they liked to return to, going back thousands of years.
As a kid, I was taught this was a harsh life and isn't it neat that we live in one place now? We don't have to move all the time and carry our houses on our backs. But when I look around, those of us who have the means take our winter vacations or our summer cottages. Because it's not a "harsh" life for a human to have a summer and winter home, it's a pretty normal thing we do when we have the option.
I have a hunch that many of us, if we look back at the long history of where we live, can find examples of migration, so many examples that when you look deeply you'll come to see what I see: humans migrate, we meet each other, sometimes we argue, but other times we make love and build things together.

What gets me about anti-immigration is as humans we spent a hundred thousand years exploring the world and intermingling practically every time we met other humans*. And then, for a fraction of that time, like a couple hundred years at the very end of a 100,000 year frolic, decided to invent "racial purity".
*and a few that technically weren't

I've like only just scratched the surface of understanding what's going on with Indigenous groups of the North, just that they exist, they share a rich and continuing history of communication and interaction, and they're facing renewed threats of colonialism as the climate crisis hastens the retreat of glaciers, promising the Empires future "wealth" in natural resources.
And yeah, I also feel gross when these places are referred to as possessions of other places.

2026-01-17 15:08:31 GMT

Hey, just a gentle reminder to folks who follow me (and in general), I actually *do* have mental health issues, so when you blame shitty things people say and do on their mental health I kinda get a bit of second-hand smoke from that, eh?
People can be shitty independent of mental health, drug use, brain damage, and disability generally. In fact, statistically people with mental health issues, drug users, and disabled people generally are more often the targets of shitty behaviour than the perpetrators.
Thanks.

Reporter: How does the last 10 or 15 years of sowing division, calling Somali people that've lived here for a generation horrible things-
Man: I moved here in 2013 and I have never had an issue in my life with someone who was an immigrant or undocumented person, never in my life. But I've had lots of problems from rich, the wealthy people taking advantage of people who aren't financially saavy, so, I don't know, I just had to mention that, sorry to cut you off.

Reporter asks about Leavitt's Insurrection Act comments. Asks where man is from
Man: "I'm from Elk River."
Reporter: What is it like the president threatening where you live?
Man: He wants us to be violent. And what I love about is is we are not violent. The only way we get violent is when we're under attack. We have the right to defend ourselves. He is threatening us so the next small incident happens, he'll have his base behind him.

R: Are you from Minneapolis?
Photog: Yeah, I live a few blocks from George Floyd square, so this is my home.
R: Why does Trump seem to have something really in his craw about Minneapolis
Photog: If you spell Venezuela backwards, you get Minnesota.
(they laugh)
Reporert asks about the camera - looks really nice, (i can't judge) 600 lens
Photog: I'm just trying to capture the story, to bear witness. This gives me a way to stay safe. I can get away from the action and still zoom in. I'm 70 years old, I have to watch it. I'm also for our neighbourhood I photgraph the lisence plates of these ICE vehicles as they come and go.
Reporter talks about how incredible the community efforts at documentation are, then breaks off because pepper spray drifted into his face. "What is it like to see the people come together so quickly?"
Photog: "It's astounding. I'm so proud to be a Minnesotan. We know how to do this, we're very principaled and as you saw (missed the park) we come out for each other."
R: "thank you very much.

In an interview with Reuters Trump suggested "We shouldn't even have an election. When you win the presidency you don't win the midterms, when you think of it we shouldn't even have an election."

R: "You have a whistle on. What is that for?"
Person: "Yeah, if you see ICE you whistle. you let people know they're around. I just keep it on me as much as I can, to alert people to their presence."
Reporter mentions how he sees that everywhere and it's a real community effort. "What has it been like watch it form?"
Person: I think that's why we're a big target is because Minneapolis is pretty quick tof ight back on this stuff and I am scared we'll be bmade an example of.
Reporter references Trump's threat of using the insurrection act. "How do you feel with that threat hanginbg over you from the president?"
Person: I guess all we can do is keep going 'cause other wise all we're just complying ahead of time. What is the alternative, backing down and saying 'come on in and take away our friends and neighbours'? Not in my mind."

R: I want to complement you on your gasmask, you set a good example.
Sue: You have to be safe. I want anyone who plans to come to a protest to let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be back, and I've written my emergency contacts on my arm."
R: I spoke to you because you looked prepared, you have your megaphone.
Sue: "These guys (ICE) are breaking the law left and right. They are violating civil liberties, they are driving 85mph down the highway, These guys are zigzagging through the streets, going too fast in small 20mph laneways.
R: We've seen some abandoned cars throughout the city. Sometimes ICE have pulled people out of their cars and just leave the vehicle there.

Oh! I think part of the problem is folks think of "colonialism" as something that's done by "better/stronger/advanced" people to "lesser/weaker/primitive" people, and that leads them to assume, because the world is so connected now and so tiny from technology, that colonialism is over now, because all the "lesser/weaker/primitive" people *must* have been colonized years ago!
But the truth is, colonialism is just one culture dominating another culture, over and over and over again, for resources and power. The myths about who was superior and who was inferior come afterwards.
It's just a few waves of empire sloshing all over the planet with each new era of resource-extraction, it can go on forever or until the resources and humans are gone if we don't end it. There isn't a past age of colonialism, we're still deeply in it.

That was fast. Watch out at protests. Reporter believes it was targetted: agents arrived, one of the ICE pointed out the woman and man and then thirty agents laid pepper ball cover fire while they abducted those people in handcuffs in less than 2 minutes.

At least one protestor is getting first aid to her eyes. "I was trying to get my mask up," I hear her say. She's in a wheelchair and has asthma, her friends are saying.

Minnesota is calling for the public to provide any evidence from the murder, as they'll need to build their case without physical evidence like the vehicle (taken by the fascist federal government agencies).

Reporter's reading breaking news that state AG and local DAs are investigating the murder of Renee Nicole Good, independent of federal investigations.

I guess ICE iced the sidewalk in front of the building to hamper the protestors, but the protestors are locals, they can handle ICE's ice.

Status Coup News reporting on the Minneapolis clashes with ICE. I think they're at the Whipple building today, where ICE is occupying and holding detainees. Tear gas has already been deployed against the protestors.

Tensions are pretty high from the video. Protestors trying to convince ICE officials to go home, quit, think about what they're doing. One ICE guy tried to "explain" they're "only enforcing the law".
