Last Notes npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…x5xv I wasted almost all of my twenties in a job with no work/life balance. After I changed jobs to one with more normal working hours (and it's a job I can "leave at the office"), I had free time to explore local socializing opportunities, especially with the furry fandom. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…s8xx Shoutout to the TREE(3) reference in the thumbnail. :aneobot_explode: npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…kzce Any sort of law or rule (setting aside things like morality) is only as effective as its degree of enforcement. There have been plenty of examples throughout U.S. history of certain laws being strictly enforced. Other rules don't even have the force of law behind them, and only served as tradition or norms until someone came along and challenged them. As an example, the presidency didn't have an explicit two-term limit (only following the precedent that George Washington set) until after FDR served four consecutive terms. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…pfuj Adding to the thread, a list of Free (federal) File providers officially endorsed by the IRS, which include certain firms mentioned like FreeTaxUSA: https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/browse-all-offers/ npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…nw2n I wonder who gave them the impression that they had "social permission" in the first place. Perhaps it was all the investors / venture capitalists, because I doubt any sizable percentage of consumers did. It feels like the AI companies and the investors are the parents in a household, making decisions about what to feed their children. And the children have to put up or shut up. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…kzce I mistook this for a fried egg at first glance. 🍳 npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…x5xv I bought a Light Fury kigurumi a few years back for similar reasons: I can't justify commissioning a custom partial/full fursuit, and this allows me to play "dress-up" at furry meets and conventions. I picked a Light Fury because it was the only mass-produced white dragon kigu I could find. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…csvl From what little I know on the matter, this seems like additional evidence that the Online Safety Act was never about protecting vulnerable populations, but always a power grab to control the information that people can access. Even in a best-case scenario where the laws actually do what they claimed to do, there seems to be potential for abuse baked in from the start. I haven't read any of the legislation myself -- is there anything in it that puts a check on potential abuse/overreach by government regulators? npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…csvl Is AliExpress a trustworthy place to buy anything? Both in terms of the quality of products sold, and the site itself? But on the other hand, I.T. workers might want to hold out on adopting new technology until all the bugs are ironed out, so... :blobfoxthink: npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…e4ry Isn't that what basically happened during the 2008 financial crisis? Millions of bad sub-prime mortgage loans re-packaged as collateralized debt obligations for basically the sole purpose of bumping up the debt by one or more letter grades? npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…2gvm Discussions about AI frequently remind me of the old adage, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." In this instance, is anybody asking the question "Is this something that is truly needed? Is this something that the majority of people want? Does it have obvious benefits?" If it's something that the majority of people neither need nor want, why is it being considered? npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I think the closest real-world example of this is convention staffing, during the convention itself. Though I've been to cons more than a dozen times and it's rare that I see the "greeting with animal noises" in practice. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…67jw offers head pats and chin scritches npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t Reminds me of the guy from Russia who changed the terms of a pre-approved credit card to give him no credit limit and no interest. :blobfoxhyper2: npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…67jw That's what passes for "boneless wings" at Papa John's? :blobfoxangry: I understand that they're primarily a pizza place, but the product served in that cardboard box reminds me of what I've made at home when I'm too lazy to cook: pull the bag of chicken nuggets / popcorn chicken out of my freezer, dump it on a plate and microwave it (and drizzle a little sauce for flavor). The thing that, in my mind, separates boneless wings from chicken nuggets is the style of the breading, and the size/shape of the pieces. This meets neither requirement. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t Pleasant, amiable dragons, I hope. :drgn_heart: npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t Isn't that just the latest iteration of consumer culture? Convince your (prospective) customer base that something is wrong/missing in their lives, and then sell a solution. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I'm reminded of something from an old Jerry Seinfeld routine (I'm paraphrasing): We developed helmets because we found that we were doing a lot of things that were cracking our skulls. But instead of stopping the skull-cracking lifestyle, we made helmets to protect ourselves. And imagine the reasoning behind using a helmet to protect a skull/brain that's not smart enough to avoid the skull-cracking activity. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…vdjy I may not be a cryptography nerd, but I definitely have muscle memory typing out words like "convention" (when I meant to say "conventional") and "event" (when trying to say "even"), because of my long-time affiliation with a particular convention. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t Is that how the items for Prime Day are selected? It makes perfect sense, but I never thought of it that way. :blobfoxthink: npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…2gvm The stock radio in my 2009 GMC Canyon had a CD player (with MP3/WMA data support) but no aux input or cassette tape. For a number of years, I played music from my iPod via one of those little cigarette-lighter FM transmitters, but it wasn't a strong signal. I treated myself to an aftermarket stereo in 2014 which had aux and USB input, and I could natively plug my iPod USB cable into that. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…2gvm You're not wrong, but: Being able to speak convincingly/authoritatively and yet being factually incorrect is nothing new. For decades (if not centuries), people have tended to trust those who claim to be experts, even when other experts can debunk what is being said. Not to mention, there are multiple occupations who have made an art of saying nonsense convincingly: lawyers and politicians are two prominent examples. What has changed, though, is the level of accessibility. The words of experts could be found in print, or occasionally broadcast on TV/radio, but it was always a one-way communication. Now these A.I. tools are available to almost everyone and they allow two-way communication. It's an example of technology progressing faster than human minds' ability to acclimate to it. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t The account username is a dead giveaway in my opinion. Nobody selects a long random alphanumeric string for a username unless: The account isn't intended to be found by others They're a cryptography enthusiast and the string has some special meaning It's a spam/scam bot account whose name was selected by random generation npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I occasionally see offers pop up like this after making an online purchase (or a hotel reservation). I always decline all these offers because they tend to be free trials of subscription services that I'm not interested in. And, like this, they're probably from companies who hope you'll forget you were given a free trial so they can bill you. Related to this, I see ads for apps like Rocket Money that claim to be able to find you cost savings by identifying and cancelling unwanted subscriptions. At first, I thought "who is paying for subscriptions to things they aren't consciously using?" but now I see this and it makes more sense. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I've never (professionally) worked any kind of tech-support role, but I must wonder whether some people just use such services as a place to vent their frustrations with [product/service] and aren't looking for any real solutions. That being said, your proposal sounds professional enough: it firmly puts the ball back in their court to close up previous requests, and if they ignore it, you've made the rule clear. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…vdjy I wonder whether there are any jurisdictions that choose to formally codify (certain) ISO standards into law. Anything that has achieved law status, in theory, should be freely accessible for a country's population. The Internet Archive has at least one collection of "global public safety codes" that bear the force of law: https://archive.org/details/publicsafetycode npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t Meanwhile I'm still using an iPod touch (64 GB model) I bought back in 2013, whose iOS version topped out at 9.3.5. When this device stops working, I won't be able to buy a replacement as the product was discontinued in 2022(?). I think I'll be forced to migrate my song library over to my (Android) phone and find a suitable third-party music app. If only Apple's built-in music app (not Apple Music, which is the subscription service) was available on Android, I'd use that for ease of transition. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…2gvm I find myself still holding back on using AI for much of anything (at least, intentionally). AI seems to show up in places like search engines where I didn't ask for its involvement, but otherwise, it doesn't feel like I personally have much legitimate use for it. I'm reminded of a quote by Andy Rooney from a few decades ago: "Computers make it easier to do a lot of things, but a lot of things that computers make easier to do, don't need done." npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I'm reminded of this Lemon Demon song and Flash Animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j9u-1ohP5Y npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…kln7 And yet social networking feels more difficult (for me) because it requires actively engaging individuals one-on-one, at a deeper level than the superficial, parasocial interactions of social media. There's a bigger commitment, and a larger risk of vulnerability, when conducting social networking. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I've never (knowingly) made use of Google's AI assistance tools. I might try it out if I knew specifically what I could use it for, but otherwise, it feels like a solution looking for a problem I don't seem to have. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I'm trying to figure out the context for this. My guess is that there's some kind of app or website called "Three" and you've signed up for SMS notifications. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…fe8t I've owned nothing but Samsung phones, from my first flip phone in '06 to the present. Not necessarily because of brand loyalty, but because of familiarity. Anyhow, Samsung has its own separate app store and all the Samsung smartphones I've owned have come pre-loaded with what is now called Samsung Notes. It's worked out well for my purposes and I haven't needed to seek out any alternatives. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…vdjy I've said it before, but I'll say it again: ad/content blockers are like condoms for web browsers, especially in this day-and-age. Regular advertising is annoying enough, but with browser hijacking and tracking cookies/spyware masquerading as advertisements, it can be outright dangerous. Practice safe browsing, people. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…vdjy I'd never heard of the "reply guy" trope. But given that the bulk of my social media activity consists of replies to others' posts (out of a genuine desire to contribute to the conversation, not to be combative)...does this mean I've been a "reply guy" all along? :blobfoxthink: npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…es7k Given that I personally haven't used Facebook in years, I'm unclear exactly what you mean by "info-hazard rubbish." Are you talking about the site having an issue with third-party tracking cookies (or the presence of Facebook's cookies on unrelated sites)? Or is a comment on the content found on Facebook itself, i.e. being a breeding ground for misinformation? npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…es7k I agree wholeheartedly. And not just a password, but also a short URL or anything else that is case-sensitive. One (non-monospace) font that easily distinguishes characters like that, is Tahoma. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…m80s I've seen the triangle comparison for coyotes, but never for cheetahs. :blobfoxthink: npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…es7k I'm not in the UK, but I've seen similar age-verification legislation being discussed where I live. For whatever my opinion is worth: I can understand the reasoning behind wanting to protect minors from adult content. Porn can have a long-lasting impact on a developing mind, and what used to only be available in select real-world locations is now streamed freely to any Internet-connected device. This legislation's intention is probably to create a digital analogue for being age-checked at adult movie/toy stores in the real world. How exactly that gets implemented in a way that's effective, however, is the challenge. Technology tends to advance faster than the laws that regulate it. And I certainly have concern about those legislators who use moral outrage as an excuse to push legislation that places restrictions on vaguely related (or even unrelated) things that they simply don't like. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…vdjy I've done virtually nothing with web coding since HTML 4.0 and Microsoft FrontPage in the early 2000's. So while I may not understand the particulars of the coding in question, I can appreciate the ridiculousness of the criticism. Basically, some unknown person showed up in your inbox unannounced and delivered bad-faith criticism of you and/or your work (which sounds like a troll to me), but apparently was too lazy to research the work manually and so used their "nifty" little AI tool to do the work. And the whole thing is just a set-up for an AI sales pitch. I know that ethics is basically persona non grata in business (and especially in sales) but I can't imagine any salesperson reaching success by cold-calling and insulting prospective customers. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @nprofile…2gvm Rain is mostly gentle when it falls in individual droplets. The same volume of water falling all at once in a continuous blob would be far more damaging. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1vg4…2yt8 🍄 🐍 ! npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1vg4…2yt8 I'll admit I don't know much about crypto, but I have heard of Electrum. It's not JavaScript-based (as far as I know) but I believe it's offline. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1vg4…2yt8 I do, along with some of the other sound effects from that game. Remember how the power poles flashed with that little electricity symbol until you attached them to a power plant? npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1vg4…2yt8 I'd like to think I've long rejected the ideas of mindless consumerism, of not buying things for the sake of buying them...but that may just be because I like money more than I like most of the products money can buy. 😅 npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1vg4…2yt8 I wonder if Hilbert's Hotel would also have an infinite number of meeting rooms / event space, and if so, whether it would cost an infinite amount of money to rent it out (or a finite amount of money for a finite amount of event space). I suspect that it's one of those things that is over-reported, i.e. it probably is happening but not nearly at the percentages people think it's happening. Sort of like age-old parental fears of teenagers having sex, unprotected or otherwise. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1vg4…2yt8 I literally made and wore a sign around my neck at TFF 2020 that said "Free Hugs 4 Fursuiters". As for closed loop, I'm not an HVAC specialist, but if one is using water to capture and discharge waste heat, it's certainly simpler to just keep using new (ambient temperature) water rather than put the water through some lengthy heat-exchange process to cool it back down to ambient. It's probably more cost-effective too. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1zes…03qs If you could have only seen how much time I debated the purchase of Fallout: New Vegas for $5 and Skyrim: Special Edition for $10 when they were part of seasonal Steam sales... npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1zes…03qs I, too, seem to be "allergic to buying games, books, and movies." 😝 npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1zes…03qs By coincidence, yesterday I watched a YouTube video from Practical Engineering that covered desalination. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1zes…03qs Perhaps that's a hallmark of adulthood, then: not having everything together, but figuring out how to keep up the appearance of having everything together. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1zes…03qs I suspect it's largely universal, and I chalk it up to naivete and optimism among youth who don't understand the way the real world works. They just see the freedom and independence of adulthood without understanding all the responsibilities that come with that freedom. npub10hsejkp027w2enddaz034l0exwh3tdwsenzglnkka7f6a6xc4yjsfl4m7y Intaglio Whitegraven @npub1zes…03qs Many typefaces display the lowercase 'A' as something resembling 'a', but I don't know a single person who writes the letter in that manner.
