do you know what the optimization achieves?

I really enjoyed this Cory Doctorow @npub1fdr…lvhs interview:
"Why Google, Apple & Big Tech Keep Making Everything Worse"
Unfortunately I could not find it on #peertube, so here is the invidious link https://yt.chocolatemoo53.com/watch?v=CK8M5sKWRkc

Sure, like any other word it is defined by its usage, while ActivityPub is defined by W3C.
Most people use it to refer to ActivityPub. Those who don't, can't be "proven wrong", but that does not mean they are right.
One can only point out the confusion resulting from the arbitrary way of speaking about systems.

2026-06-25 09:01:10 GMT

ActivityPub = Fediverse
Fediverse = ActivityPub
If other federated things like XMPP, Matrix or E-Mail were part of it, the Fediverse would exist at least since 1971.
Nobody saying "Fediverse" talks about something older than the web.

I don't get it what Mastodon has to do with bees.
Do you post similar things to suggest facebook, google or instagram are out of touch with reality, too?
Or, 🤔 Since you post it on mastodon, you want to show how you give in to silliness?
This is too goolge for me - , err… meta. 🤯

Hold on, this isn't fair. Now I really want to check this out and you say it isn't released yet? 😡
Just promise to boost your post when it is ready to be used. 😃

I can't believe how bad my current #matrix experience is: I TRY to join the #codeberg chat:
I'm in, but not really.
I see only old posts.
I can't leave.
I can't rejoin.
Oh, there is a red exclamation mark.
But I'm in the room.
I have no permission.
It is a public room.
I can delete my message.
"Some of your messages have not been sent".
…and this is the flagship client.

@npub1mtr…trt0 I can appreciate that your screenshot on the front page (the one prominent first impression!) is translated in 25 languages.
You may consider not using an almost 10 year old image, though. Apps and their icons change… including the phone frame.

I feel like Microsoft still isn't mentioned often enough in the Github context.
Microsoft.
Microsoft is Github. No idea how people can rationalize that away. 🤦

The irony 🫣 : #Firefox of all projects in the world should absolutely know better when it comes to browsers NOT adding bloat and becoming "a broader ecosystem of trusted software".

2025-11-05 10:56:18 GMT

🤨 No, you don't install #Linux on your "OLD" computer, you install it on your current one - as the "NEW" computer remains in the store and does not belong to you, as you were not forced to buy it, and you prefer to keep the money instead.
…rubs me the wrong way every time I read this during #endof10
Also: please do install Linux on NEW computers, too. Don't bias yourself into thinking Windows is somehow snappier by giving it the faster hardware 😉

i did not. I don't know how. It is one oft those "just compile the kernel with the right drivers" suggestions. Maybe correct, but not really useful 😒

installing appimage on Manjaro (Wayland on Nvidia):
Camera does not work, importing backup seemed to work. Then the window content disappeared, I closed the window but the process still kept running. Killing all Tauri processes made it possible to start it again. Looked great - upon first interaction everything in the window disappears again. 🤷‍♂️
Did that help?
To some degree it is better than the Electron flatpak version already (it does not start at all if I don't provide extra arguments :P )

silly me. I only expected it as AfterEffects alternative. While it is still not listed correctly in my eyes – I should have at least searched properly. 🙄

List #friction as an aftereffects alternative already! 🤩

It looks like it suffers from the same downsides, at leas partially: My device unfortunately isn't among the 55 they try to maintain… 😩

2025-04-08 15:55:53 GMT

I think it is a fundamentally broken approach because even *if* we somehow keep those hundreds (or thousands?) of people maintaining builds – how can you have trust in security of a process when it all boils down to an arbitrary single human per device?

2025-04-08 09:42:21 GMT

Here is my beef with android and custom roms in general: being able to run LineageOS is fine, but obviously all it needs to stop getting updates is the *one* maintainer breaking his model of the phone – and you are out of luck.
You don't even get notified – updates suddenly… just don't happen anymore.
I really want a system that works like a PC. 😩

Thank you! Putting the Firefox dilemma in pictures makes it less academic and more approachable issue. I hope many people realize how empowering it is to use free software that can be replaced easily.
It is not always so easy:

Good bye Firefox. That's it for good. #Firefox has officially lost it now. I don't know if they ever manage to regain my trust, but no. No no no no no. No! ☝️
When I upload or input information through Firefox, I hereby DO NOT grant you a nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use that information to help me with anything. YOU NUTS?!!?

#Godot 3D possibly is deeply and utterly fucked 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯:
From my point of view every Godot FPS game suffers from micro stutters like this:
https://codeberg.org/Power-Run/Power-Run/issues/49
I can reproduce this in Manjaro on X11 and Wayland, on Nvidia and Intel GPUs on high refresh Monitors and a slow 60hz Laptop.
I tested at least 7 other FPS templates/implementations. This bug seems hardcoded into the engine.
Think I'm full of shit? - Show me any smooth FPS in Godot, I'd *LOVE* to be proven wrong.

2025-01-06 15:01:20 GMT

Random design thought: Project leaders underestimate the amount of time it takes to work on design - for them.
Good results are shaped by exchange of ideas and deep understanding of the others needs, problems and requirements.
This takes time.

I don't know Zulip, I'd be interested in what ways it is better than matrix (the rather established alternative in FOSS) in your eyes.

2024-12-26 12:34:24 GMT

Any #3D people with #gamedev experience can tell me why my #godot project does not run smooth? (the video is 60FPS, ingame even 165, as is my monitor)
Is this movement related or rendering issue?!? 🤷‍♂️

I'm really confused why #peertube does not allow to encode videos client side, so that one can just upload the file. It is so unnecessary to re-encode and add extra artifacts instead of just providing the right file from the get go. (not even mentioning scaled versions)
Is there a reason this not a thing https://framapiaf.org/@peertube ?

Hot take: Hosting FOSS projects on Github is like having Fridays for Future meetups in Exxon Mobile Headquarters.
They made it cozy and cheap for you there, I get it. But don't call me absolutist for the audacity of having values and raising concern. If you don't see values in FOSS and prefer to be "pragmatic" that's a you problem. Not me being toxic.

"Patches welcome" can perfectly be interpreted as a "Fuck off", given the right context. You seem to assume that the "Fuck off" context is always fine, because of the very nature of everybody's voluntary involvement .
It is a bit like defending being rude whenever you can. Sure you can, but that does not make it ok.
As a disclaimer, I think this cuts both ways as bug reports can be rude and opinionated, too.

This take is as nuanced as "showing somebody the door" is just a reminder how door knobs work. It depends if the other person was searching for an exit or said something that made you feel uncomfortable.
"Patches welcome." can be constructive or even welcoming, but depending on the context it can also be borderline rude.

Look at that: #Bluesky wants to cuddle with #Freedombox … at least their new logo strongly suggests something along those lines. 😘
So maybe we'll soon be be able to install a Bluesky server on every Freedombox 😉
