New global science panel to help countries move away from fossil fuels, linking climate science, economics and real-world policy. Convened by PIK Director Johan Rockström & co-chaired by PIK Director Ottmar Edenhofer, the initiative will support countries in developing pathways out of oil, gas and coal.

🆕 While the #AMOC is showing signs of slowing down, its Nordic branch #NOC is projected to strengthen. Researchers have now identified a density-driven mechanism that links these opposing trends.
“The stability of the NOC and its projected increase have been viewed by some as a contradiction to the weakening AMOC. But our findings tell us the opposite. The strengthening of the NOC is a physical consequence of AMOC weakening,” said co-author @npub1cau…kvw2 of PIK.

🆕 study: Global warming must stay below 2°C and return to 1.5°C as quickly as possible to reduce tipping point risks. Long term, temperatures must cool to 1°C above pre-industrial levels, scientists from University of Exeter, CICERO - Center for International Climate Research & PIK find.

Carbon dioxide removal requires careful site selection to avoid harm to #biodiversity, a new study shows. At the same time, the researchers find that the cooling effects of #CDR can benefit biodiversity.
The analysis shows that in ambitious emissions-reduction scenarios, where global warming temporarily overshoots 1.5°C before returning to it by 2100, up to 13 percent of land allocated to #CDR could overlap with areas of high biodiversity value.

It identifies 23 levers, calculates their effectiveness and concludes: a decisive transformation of this sector alone can limit global heating to 1.85°C by 2050.
