A Prayer before Dawn is an impressive, dismal, gritty portrait of life in a Thai prison, telling the true story of the British Billy Moore, who used Thai Boxing as a way of trying to improve his life inside a Thai prison.

Last time I watched The Fisher King was in the early 2000s. I had forgotten the details, and was slightly afraid it would have become dated when I rewatched it in 2026. But The Fisher King has withstood the test of time. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a timeless Terry Gilliam classic, with depth, humour, a disarming story, and great performances of Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams. The chemistry between them is palpable.

Alice doesn’t live here anymore has several distinctive Scorsese trademarks: such as a certain timelessness, credible real-life characters, humour, strong women and the fact that two hours passed by workout a moment of boredom.
It’s such a shame Scorsese has embraced AI now. 😔

Moonlight is a moving tale of human compassion and the search for love. The cinematography is atmospheric and at times timelessly beautiful, the performances are subtle and convincing, the narrative doesn’t degrade into melodrama, and the soundtrack perfectly matches the storytelling. A gem.

I guess this is an unpopular opinion, but I thought Project Hail Mary was predominantly tiresome. When I started watching the film, I didn’t know what to expect, but I didn’t expect a lighthearted, nervous, unconvincing semi-comedy in Space that kept dragging on, and felt like it was aimed at youngsters. As a consequence, I wasn’t involved in the story, and I didn’t feel sympathy for the characters. So I started fast-forwarding in the second half, and was relieved it was over. There, I’ve said it.

Remarkably Bright Creatures turned out to be a finely crafted feel-good film, with some pretty moving moments. All performances were solid, but Sally Field proved again what a splendid, experienced actress she is.

Wow, Task really impressed me. As far as I’m concerned, this series is in the same league as True Detective season one. Great cast, great performances, great character depth, great scenario, the works. A gem.
