I want a society that’s designed to make everyone moderately wealthy, and not only five people astronomically wealthy. The damage and misery caused by unmitigated inequality has been demonstrated over and over again, for millennia, yet we fall for the lie over and over again.
In the US, we choose inequality because we are taught to believe the blatant lie that we might one day *be* one of those five fabulously wealthy people. But look at the numbers: there are only five of them among millions; the odds are staggeringly against you.
It’s like a middle-school sports enthusiast thinking they will become a top-billing star in some major league, and make tens of millions of dollars a year: the numbers simply do not work out; there are only so many quarterback positions available, and tens of thousands of applicants. Yet they are raised to cling to that selfish “dream” instead of focusing on building something that *everyone* (including themselves) is likely to benefit from.

It appears that turning off the new “Smart Features” in #GMail that “provide smart features and personalize your experience” also turns off a decades-old feature that categorizes spam away from your Inbox.
Smart Features uses Gemini #AI to enable LLM-assisted email composition and summary, and to suggest stuff from your calendars and promotional items.
In other words, disabling GMail’s AI features requires you to give up a categorization feature that you’ve had for decades, long before “AI” as we know it today was even a thing.

I think we can all dispense with the fiction that the separation of branches of government can overpower the collusion of partisanship. George Washington was right after all.
It follows, then, that a better system of government must weaken the strength of parties, by allowing minor parties to become competitive. I think that begins with #RankedChoiceVoting, which effectively undoes the natural game-theory tendency for two, and only two, very powerful parties to emerge.
What I would like to see next is the abolition of the Senate and the electoral college altogether, but that seems much less likely than first switching to RCV in the majority of states, or passing an amendment that permitted RCV in the way electoral college votes are counted.

One of the biggest reasons why I left Spotify (this was after they gave Joe Rogan a truckload of money, and tried to embrace/extinguish podcasts, but before they played ICE ads and before I discovered their CEO invests in killer drones) was because they were padding their LoFi playlists with garbage AI slop attributed to fictitious artists, bands, and labels. They were obviously doing this to avoid paying out any money to artists despite continual playback.

I’m not a #finance expert but this seems really bad. Banks haven’t needed this much cash infusion since the 2008 recession. On Oct 31, the Fed infused $51B of cash into one bank (they didn’t say which), and on Dec 28, they infused another $34B of cash into another bank (again they didn’t say which). This is after five years of zero such actions.
The article speculates that there is a short squeeze: banks have been shorting precious metals like silver and gold, but their prices have skyrocketed. They’re getting margin-called.
In any case, it seems that banks are suffering a liquidity crunch, to the tune of about $85B so far. Is this bad? This seems bad.

I still remember an acquaintance of mine firmly justifying the existence of private equity as basically “a bunch of folks putting their money together”, and yeah, I guess that’s true, but the track record of their devastation is undeniable. From Toys R Us to Boston Market and Red Lobster, they appear to behave in a destructive and exploitative manner.
I’m still scratching my head as to what kind of regulation can be put in place to prevent this—probably none? Maybe an employee-owned corporation can resist this force?

In fact, Paul was proud of the fact that when he turned from persecuting Jesus’ followers to promoting his teaching, he DID NOT CONSULT ANY OF THE ORIGINAL APOSTLES. He went on a three-year world tour to promote the new Jesus religion before speaking to a single one of the actual people who lived with Jesus. Anyway, this is a rant from an atheist who used to read the Bible. I think Jesus was actually a cool dude: a humble illegitimate son, born to a teenage mother who was knocked up by a man who got away with it. He was a friend to the underdogs. He mostly ignored the Roman Empire but nevertheless annoyed them more than any of the bigwigs of Judea. He hated wealth-hoarders and monetizers. He wanted a society that fed and clothed each other. And for that, the establishment (both religious and secular) tortured and killed him.
Then some people turned him into a resurrected god, and it went downhill from there.

Paul was not one of the original twelve apostles—those with direct knowledge of what Jesus did—but a religious scholar of sorts, who first persecuted Jesus, but then had a change of heart, and took it to himself to spread the “good news” of Jesus. In the process, he invented an entire theology and narrative about Jesus that the latter never actually claimed, along with rules and regulations that were more a product of his time than any eternal set of values.
It’s interesting to note that almost every “culture war” topic US conservatives complain about today is either a Pauline concept, or something Jesus never addressed, or worse, actually opposed. Homosexuality? Paul (Rom 1:26–27). Women in power? Paul (1 Cor 14:34). Abortion? Actually nobody mentioned that one (trick question).

As we round the orbit to another season of Christmas, I’m once again bringing up as an ex-Christian that a lot of “Christian doctrine” that believers lay claim to was actually written by Paul, then expanded over time by countless Catholic expositions, Protestant philosophers, and modern-day Evangelical charlatans.
Almost everything that we know about what Jesus personally taught can be read in the three and a half gospels (the Gospel of John is less of a historical record and more a philosophical interpretation of what Jesus did from a certain religious perspective, but anyway), and when you focus only on what Jesus taught it’s…actually not that much.
Jesus taught that love for your fellow humans was more important than adherence to Law. He taught empathy for the misfit, the oppressed, and the marginalized. He despised relentless monetization. He fed the hungry, lifted the downtrodden, and “healed” without condition. He preached nonviolence and a separation of religion and power.

I recently saw a video that claimed that conservatives behave the way they do because they have oversized amygdalae (the part of the brain that causes alarm and anxiety). While there are apparently multiple studies that show correlation between amygdala size and conservative leaning, the person in this video extrapolated this information further: that conservatives are biological misfits in today’s world; that their brain structures never progressed beyond skittish hunter-gatherer behavior; and that modern medical science is the only thing that has kept them from going extinct. This is dangerous rhetoric, and it has to be stopped. This leads to #eugenics.
I’m *exceedingly* skeptical whenever someone offers a simple anatomical explanation for complex behavior. People have been blaming undesirable behavior on everything from unruly uteri (hysteria), to “criminal skull shapes”, to—yep—skin color and ancestry, leading to countless volumes of bigotry and suffering.

I mean, math is *useful*.
Everything in math is made-up. Some made-up parts of math are useful for modeling reality, so they continue to be used. Other made-up parts are not useful, and they are dropped. Nothing in math is completely provable (Gödel’s incompleteness theorem), but nevertheless, the surviving collection of made-up parts are consistent *enough* to be useful in understanding and manipulating real objects.

I used to write code for avionics (GPS sensors) and bit flips in RAM was a real concern. We used ECC RAM (40 bits per 32 bits) that we periodically read and wrote to, and we periodically invalidated caches to force a reread of Flash ROM to mitigate the errors. We also had reasonableness checks at various points in our processing to catch the rarer register-level flips that don’t cause a crash. We also had external watchdog circuits that would hard reset the CPUs if it became unresponsive. For higher integrity, integrators can use multi-sensor or dissimilar-sensor setups for cross-checking.

The fact that OpenAI can become a for-profit company after tens of billions of dollars have been spent on this “nonprofit” sounds really fishy to me, and sounds like a really bad precedent, suggesting that any nonprofit can be owned by capitalists whenever it becomes financially desirable enough.

Look, I’m not/no longer an Evangelical Christian, and I think John’s book of Revelation was mostly relevant to Roman-occupied first-century Greece rather than the reader today, but it’s SO EASY to apply its text about the Antichrist to #Trump, who checks so many boxes it should raise every Evangelical’s eyebrows.

IMO there’s really no way to do this with “zero trust” end-to-end (in the human sense, not the technical term). The identity and the resource being accessed must be associatable. Now, whether or not this information is stored is a different question, and it may be possible to provide services that immediately discard this association, but that’s not a guarantee, and it remains a deanonymyzing vector.

The tl;dr is that the amount of money spent on capital expenditure (building server farms and chips) for AI has exploded, but it has not brought the concomitant revenue growth to make it sustainable. AI capex is now responsible for more GDP growth than “all of consumer spending combined.” To pay for this, the AI industry needs to generate more than $2T *annual* revenue by 2030, which is ludicrous. Sooner or later, the piper must get paid.

This article seemed like a fluff piece at first, but the more I read it, the more I realized that it describes an insidious and serious problem that’s spreading undetected across society.
I know (thankfully few) people who regularly talk to ChatGPT about their day. ChatGPT being a statistical word extruder will dutifully listen and regurgitate your point of view, as it is designed to choose words from the same probabilistic cluster that your own words come from. You end up staring into a carnival funhouse mirror, but you slowly begin to mistake your reflection for another, very sympathetic, person.
Charlatans of all ages have known to use sycophancy and obsequious agreement to manipulate the vulnerable. #AI is now automating this behavior at scale.

Rep. Brian Mast (R-Florida) has introduced a bill that would allow the Secretary of State (which today is Marco Rubio) to designate any US citizen a “terrorist supporter” based on their online speech, and deny them a passport.
First of all, a passport should be a *right* to any US citizen and a *service* provided by the US government. Refusing to issue a passport is essentially the equivalent of confiscating one’s passport—something that is already illegal to do.
Second, the First Amendment prohibits the government from creating laws that constrain people’s right to speech and opinion, something that Republicans have seemingly never understood. For a government agency to deny service to a citizen based on their speech is clearly unconstitutional.
