"modernizing the linux A/V stack" .. ignoring the V part, tell me more about A .. I'm not aware of Steam having done anything at all about audio on Linux.

I wasn't for a moment suggesting that you were failing to make it clear that it was unofficial. You did.

I wonder what Ableton support will say when they ask you what platform you're using if you have a question for them ....
Great, and yet ... not so great (especially since we know they have native versions but just don't release for Linux)

normally I favor such an approach quite strongly.
But in the case, I think the "late stage" prefix really just means "now" and really doesn't add anything useful. People having been identifying the "current" state of capitalism as a problem for a very long time, and we should conclude that it's not "late stage" or "early stage" or anything else-capitalism that's the problem - it's just capitalism, plain and simple.

fascinating story, but I really think we need a different term:

I was at the UK premiere of Sextet in the 80s. I cried when they started bowing the metallophones.
The 2nd part is one of my favorite bits of Reich.
I do like this Vic Firth recording, but there's not quite as much of the joy that Eighth Blackbird brings to 18 Musicians in that Chicago performance. OTOH, with writing this good, how could it be far from magical? And it is a *very* good performance (from memory too!)

I have more or less every recording and have watched every YT video of 18 musicians being performed.
This one is *by far* my favorite. Something about the light change as twilight and then evening develops, the random energy and diversity of the audience, and the performance energy of the musicians:

instead of focusing on LLM-driven development, I'd like to see more people talking very loudly about what scraping-for-training-LLMs is doing to open source infrastructure. We've had to block over a million IP addresses and bar access to individual commits for all our public repos. Our bandwidth costs are driven up. Every FLOSS project I know is facing this. They don't respect our licensing, our time or our money. This is a problem *right now*, not next month or next year.

In the last 2 months, ardour.org has banned 1.2M (yes, million) distinct IP addresses for trying to slurp from our git repository using http instead of git (i.e. AI trawlers).
It's now been nearly a week since we shutdown the web frontend to our git repository, and there are still 22k or so new IP addresses per day trying to hit a site that returns only 404 errors, and the access log shows about one hit every 4-5 seconds.
This AI trawling has to stop! They could just pull the git repo!

How the Trump administration calculated the "tariffs" charged by other countries:
max(0.1, ((imports - exports) / imports) * 0.5)

Years (26?) ago I saw Robert Fripp do a Q&A which was the first time I encountered something about my British heritage that I wanted to embrace
Tonight I discovered another example. It's not that Jacob or Chris Martin are new to me, or that this performance could only have happened at the O2 or only in London. It's just that it did happen there, and somehow they and the audience are connected to a single strand of what is good about the UK

1000 years ago, the people who lived at Chaco Canyon and the area around it knew about the 18.6 year lunar cycle, in which the rise/set position of the moon slowly moves between north and south.
This is a generational project - you need 3+ generations to confirm the pattern, or 56 years of tracking and comparison. Globally, humans might have known this since 2500BC!
Tonight is the END of the lunar cycle - the moon will be at the northern-most position of its cycle - aka the "lunastice".

After upgrading to #pipewire version 1.2.5. Finally, I am back to an audio system that works as well (or better!) than my old hand-tweaked setup with JACK1 and PulseAudio.
Unlike that system, this one is fully integrated - things using any of the various Linux audio APIs are all visible and routable to each other.
Latency is the same or better as I got with JACK1.
Truly excellent. Good job @npub178g…eugr
(and for those who don't know, I wrote JACK1, with the help of a lot of amazing people).
