Hi folks -- according to the analytics on https://pachli.app (umami.is, "No cookies, no tracking across sites, no personal data collection"), roughly 5% of this account's followers click through to read the release notes for each release.
If you're one of the 95% who isn't reading the release notes, and you have a bit of time, could you provide feedback on why you don't? I'd like them to be useful, and they highlight everyone else who has contributed to each release.

@nprofile…8fvp Hmm, this is two problems.
1. Pachli should not be showing the translation menu option on fedifreu.de because the server can't translate. That's a Pachli bug, I've noted it at https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/issues/2173. Thanks for raising this.
2. The 503 error from anoxinon means the server is rejecting the translation request. That's definitely a problem that @nprofile…2vgg will need to investigate (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/503)

2026-03-19 11:00:03 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…8fvp Getting back to your original question -- if translation is failing on anoxinon.de Pachli should show an error message at the bottom of the screen when that happens. What does that say / can you send a screenshot? That will help understand the problem.

2026-03-19 10:43:13 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…8fvp That's absolutely fine. As the blog post notes:
> While the library is free to use it is not open source. As some Pachli users may want to avoid proprietary libraries this feature is not present on Pachli installed from F-Droid or GitHub. If this is you then you can skip the rest of this section.
That's why Pachli gives you the choice of where to install from.
To forestall the next question: I was unable to find an open source library with similar functionality that worked reliably.

2026-03-19 10:33:28 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…8fvp @nprofile…2vgg What error does Pachli report with your social.anoxinon.de account?
https://fedifreu.de (if that's the other server you mean) doesn't support server-side translation. Tusky doesn't support on-device translation, so if you want to use translation on fedifreu.de you'll need to use Pachli's on-device translation support (https://pachli.app/pachli/2025/08/28/2.16.0-release.html#support-on-device-translation-if-installed-from-google-play, only available if Pachli is installed from Google Play).

2026-03-19 10:14:40 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…8fvp How are the Pachli translation settings configured (https://pachli.app/pachli/2025/08/28/2.16.0-release.html#support-on-device-translation-if-installed-from-google-play)?
If "How to translate" is set to "Server only" it's possible your server is having an issue with their translation service. /cc @nprofile…2vgg in case they need to investigate.

2. #accessible #talkback actions have been added, and the descriptions have been improved to provide a better experience.
Thanks to @nprofile…hygc, @nprofile…hun7 , and @nprofile…v6z5 for the feedback that prompted these changes.

As ever, thanks everyone for #Pachli feedback and bug reports.
I'm travelling until the end of January, so while the January release will happen, I expect it will only include the hard work of all the people who have contributed new and updated translations.
If you would like to help translate Pachli into your language, see https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/blob/main/docs%2Fcontributing%2Ftranslate.md
Work on feature requests and bug reports will resume in February.

@nprofile…su47 I haven't I'm afraid. Do you happen to remember if there was anything specific about the post?
E.g., is it a new post, or a reply? Are you doing something that might trigger the autocomplete function (typing a hashtag, or mentioning a user)?
Also, are you able to try Pachli Current, and see if that has the same behaviour? If it does it might prompt you to send a crash report.

2025-12-12 23:15:50 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…su47 There's a "Load newest posts" item in the menu. There's a preference you can change that makes that the default behaviour when you tap a tab.

2025-11-25 16:37:31 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…hh88 This is to do with how the Bluesky bridge works I think.
There was some discussion about this in the three comments starting at https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/issues/1801#issuecomment-3562858386.
tl;dr: The Bluesky bridge doesn't implement Mastodon's quote post yet.

2025-11-23 16:50:03 GMT

The "Display pronouns" feature in #Pachli Current now has a preference setting.
The default behaviour is to show the pronouns (if present) when replying to a post, and in the autocomplete results when writing/replying to a post.
I expect this gives the best default balance of usability without overloading the user with too much information.
If you want to see pronouns everywhere you can enable that. And if your language doesn't have gendered pronouns you can turn off the pronoun display.

2025-11-13 22:14:03 GMT

#Pachli Current is rolling out with initial support for displaying #QuotePosts.
Details, including screenshots, open questions, and the best way to provide feedback, are all at https://pachli.app/pachli/2025/11/13/quote-posts.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=quote-posts-1.

2025-10-23 08:45:05 GMT

I don't think this is the final way quote posts will be presented in #Pachli and it's not ready for release yet (not even in Pachli Current), but quote posts do display now.
To set expectations, I don't think this will be ready for inclusion in the release at the end of this month, but it should be in Pachli Current early next month so early adopters can try it and provide feedback.
https://files.mastodon.social/media_attachments/files/115/422/588/610/705/562/original/0cea5305209b8576.png

2025-10-07 12:31:44 GMT

As part of refactoring work to make implementing quote posts easier, #Pachli Current is rolling out with UX improvements when you interact with posts, especially favourite or boost.
Previously, the icon would change, but the associated count wouldn't. So you could have a post that was boosted but showed 0 boosts. Now the number changes as soon as you press the button. When the boost completes on your server the post is also updated to reflect it's latest data.

Still working on UX improvements around emoji handling. Right now, writing a post and inserting an emoji shows the emoji shortcode (first image).
But it's probably more useful if it shows the actual emoji image, right (second image)?
Long-pressing an emoji in the emoji picker to see a larger version of it is probably useful too (third image).

@nprofile…tsy4 As others have noted, this requires server configuration.
At the moment Pachli doesn't do this (automatically or otherwise) because
1. Pachli only talks to the server(s) associated with your account(s). Contacting unrelated servers on your behalf is something that would need to be behind a setting.
2. Having the servers do this is, architecturally, much better.
3. I haven't done the work...

2025-08-15 19:51:50 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…tsy4 They're not unsolicited. You still need to use the "..." menu on a post and choose "Translate" from there.
Although now you mention it, with on-device translation now possible an option to auto-translate anything that's not in your preferred language isn't a bad idea...

2025-08-14 22:32:22 GMT

Coming to #Pachli Current in a few days - support for translating posts on your device.
Helpful if your server doesn't support translation, and can be used to translate posts your server refuses to translate.
Won't be available in the #FDroid and #GitHub releases, as this feature uses the same non-free Google machine learning libraries as the "Warn if you're posting in the wrong language" feature.

The latest #Pachli Current now remembers your reading position on the Local and Federated timelines.
If you're on a busy server and reopening them after some time you can use the "Load newest posts" menu option to jump to the top (or change the settings to make that the behaviour when tapping a tab).

## New features
- Combat phishing by highlighting roles on accounts
- Edge-to-edge UI
- Video playback improvements
- Options to mute-by-default, adjust repeat mode, show subtitles
- Pause when headphones are disconnected
- Emoji improvements
- Show emojis by category, and make them searchable
- Display wide emojis properly
- Show emojis in more places
- Show moderation warning notifications

Hey #Pachli translators -- I've just enabled a Weblate setting that should show your "translation memory" of any work you've done on other projects in Weblate show up when you're translating (on the "Automatic suggestions" tab).
Hopefully this makes the translation work a bit easier.
Thanks to @nprofile…nvrk for flagging that this was missing, and thanks to all of you for your work.

2025-06-12 17:21:32 GMT

Do you use lists?
Today's #Pachli Current release improves their usability by remembering your reading position in the list, similarly to how it behaves on the Home and Notifications timelines.
Lists can be a great way to move content from some people you follow out of your home timeline and into a dedicated space, and of course, each list can be added to its own tab.

@nprofile…tsy4 @nprofile…uuja @nprofile…h5n0
> I post in multiple languages and would prefer not to litter people's timelines with stuff they can't read
As long as you set the language correctly, people can choose which language(s) they want to see when they follow you.
That's not exposed in the Pachli UI yet, it needs to be done in the web UI.

2025-05-28 20:59:16 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…tsy4 @nprofile…uuja @nprofile…h5n0 It's doable, but there's a risk of false-positives / false-negatives, because people aren't generally great at marking the language in their posts correctly.
The language detection Pachli already does can help, but it's also imprecise on short messages. That's OK for the language check when writing a post, but if it's filtering your timeline it could easily exclude stuff that you should have seen.

@nprofile…tsy4 @nprofile…uuja @nprofile…h5n0 Not sure what you mean about improved language filtering?
Do you mean filtering out posts from your home timeline, depending on the language they're written in?

2025-05-11 23:09:15 GMT

#Pachli Current users - as ever, thanks for testing. Today's release modifies the code that figures out where you're going when you open Pachli, and which account to use. This clears up some technical debt and paves the way for an "Account management" screen, coming soon.
If you use multiple accounts you'll notice the splash screen appears when you switch accounts so the UI doesn't flicker as the new account data is loaded.
Everything else should behave the same. Please shout if it doesn't.

@nprofile…n6sp I'm not saying that all posts that test this functionality should be baking-related.
But I'm not **not** saying that...

2025-05-06 19:50:52 GMT

#Pachli Current is rolling out the new media description UI for feedback.
Since the last screenshot some of the padding has been tightened up and the colours toned down a little. The image size adjusts to the device size to leave enough room for writing the caption.
Also, some servers report the actual max number of characters you can put in the description. If it's available that's now used, instead of being fixed to 1,500.
Feedback (after you've tried it in Pachli Current) welcomed.
https://files.mastodon.social/media_attachments/files/114/462/614/026/529/518/original/74367e4eb8ef9e57.png

2025-05-05 08:38:09 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…n6sp It's marginally narrower, because of the image next to it. There's some padding around the text that can probably be removed, and the design still feels a bit too busy -- the information:pixel ratio in the design feels too low.

2025-05-04 15:53:29 GMT

It's been a rainy day in Zurich, so I had a free hour to prototype some changes to how media is attached to posts in #Pachli.

@nprofile…fn2v Second problem, " 'load newest posts' is intermittently non functioning".
What does "non-functioning" mean here?
No new posts appear? There's a check for new posts that never stops (i.e., the blue progress bar toward the top of the screen never disappears)? Something else?

2025-04-08 18:40:16 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…fn2v ok. First problem, "I can't share images now".
Are you writing a post in Pachli and adding an image as an attachment? Or are you opening an image in another app, using that app's "Share" option, and then choosing Pachli as the app to share to?
In either case, what, exactly, happens when you do that?

2025-04-08 17:04:28 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…fn2v Sorry to hear about the problems.
1. Are any error messages shown?
2. Do you see the same problems on your server with the web app, or any other client?

2025-04-04 14:25:41 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…tsy4 @nprofile…h5n0 1st point will be fixed with https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/pull/1445, thanks for flagging that.
Re the sorting -- it's sorted by popularity in search results and autocompleting when writing a post. But if you're looking at your list of followed tags I think it's better if they're alphabetical, so the sort is stable every time you open the screen (and you can predict where in the list a new tag will appear when added).
And yes, always new strings to translate :-)

If you ignore the scrolling jankiness (that's trying to use a mouse to drag-scroll in an emulator) and UI oddity (the grey line appearing and disappearing)...

Did you know that #Mastodon 4.2.0 introduced additional search filters?
You can add text like "from:me", "has:media", "is:reply", or "language:de" to your search text to limit the results further.
That's not very user friendly, so we can do better.
Here's a user-interface change I'm iterating on for the next version of #Pachli.

Mastodon expects you to accurately set the language of your post before posting.
There are real-world accessibility problems if you set it incorrectly, including:
(a) Mastodon's translation feature may not work correctly
(b) when people follow you they can opt-in to only receive posts you send in a particular language. If you mis-label the language of your posts you may be inadvertently spamming your followers.

Coming to #Pachli Current soon, maybe by the end of the week - "Suggested accounts".
Accessible from the navigation menu, this shows you up to 80 accounts your server admins think you might like to follow.

@npub1gnx…d5kh Yes. Mastodon lets you schedule posts (at least 5 minutes in advance).
You can see your scheduled posts from the left-navigation menu.

@npub1gnx…d5kh yeah, I've been spending some time thinking about what the UI for that would look like.
It would also need some substantial internal changes to deal with all the errors that can occur (eg., if you try and post a thread of three messages and the first two post but the third one doesn't).

@npub1gnx…d5kh Welcome. Very interested to hear about anything you encounter, positive or negative

#Tusky (and therefore #Pachli) has regular reports from some users that notifications don't work.
I've never been able to reproduce these issues. To get to the bottom of it the next version of #Pachli Current will show a lot more debugging information so users can understand how notifications are being processed and we can fix them.
See the attached screenshot for a preview.

Two quality of life improvements when viewing media attachments in the latest #Pachli Current release.
1. The screen will stay on while media is playing. Thanks to @npub1l4y…krxj for suggesting this in https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/issues/335.
2. While I was experimenting with this I noticed that preview images on audio attachments weren't showing up. Now they are.
If you're not using Pachli Current and want to try features like this before they're released check https://pachli.app/download/#pachli-current for instructions.

The newest version of #Pachli Current contains additional checks for server capabilities.
So if your account is on a #GoToSocial server you won't be repeatedly warned about filter errors, the filter functionality is disabled (https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/issues/1472).
This paves the way for per-server feature support (e.g., emoji reactions, finer-grained post ACLs) in the future.
Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/issues/343
