Late stage capitalist realism means that your economy becomes progressively dependent on what could only be called public-private works projects. From the war machine to cryptocurrency to LNG expansionism to data centers, we live in an era of completely superfluous production subsidized by the worker, the taxpayer, the consumer, and the environment. All just to keep this train wreck going because that is now a good unto itself.

Why is housing scarcity inevitable because of NIMBY, but not data center scarcity? Why is popularity used to explain away our residential zoning, but seemingly not a factor in industrial zoning? What's the wind in the sails? Could it be that authority rests not in the hands of the people or their representatives, but instead in a cartel of firms? Could it be that the city council, state, and federal legislatures are aligned in the interests of capital formation at the expense of all else?

Sharing this again now that the verdicts have come in.
Nine people will likely spend years of their lives in prison because one person seems to have fired bullets at the ground when a cop had their gun drawn on somebody with their back turned.
People are going to do serious time for attending a protest, waiting in cars, removing people from Signal group chats, and moving some zines.
And the entire case rested on outright lies and the conspiracy theories of an SPLC-designated hate group.

Fearing the short list and waiting for articles to make it to third party archiving slows movement response time beyond what can be justified by police and court documents.
Organized crime goes through all those precautions and gets bagged by an infiltrator who got the boss to like him.
Getting in a car today and meeting someone in-person puts you on the radar of Flock, TXDoT (here in Texas), who knows who else. Threat modeling is situational, hence our avoidance of prescriptions.

I understand why they want to do it. The old way was to use protests as the wide end of a funnel into their donor pools, their volunteer programs, their canvassing campaigns, etc. Lists of contacts that you could retain after the fact and tap into over and over again to build out your own network felt like a huge win. The problem is that these tactics haven't actually achieved the desired capacity within the movement, and they are now in most cases more hazardous than helpful.

Demands that would empower children.
1. Algorithm transparency so we can stop companies from presenting vulnerable groups to their existential adversaries just to make number go up.
2. More time for parents to spend with kids (higher minimum wage, social safety net, shorter workday, etc.) because there is no internet that is safe enough to live a kid on unattended.
3. Livable cities so Roblox doesn't feel more free/attainable than going to the park, the library, the city center, or the creek.

In our talk with the Denton library board a few months ago, we discussed exactly this problem. We advocated for municipally run, federated social media. If every city was running a Mastodon instance right now, we would be having a different conversation entirely.
Fully hosted setups such as https://masto.host only require non-technical moderation. These solutions cost as little as five cents per user per month. Coupled with library quality placemaking, we could finally establish a virtual commons worthy of the investment.
Building out municipally federating social media infrastructure would solve the Elon problem while also dealing with several Fediverse downsides. Most of those downsides are social, not technical, in origin - poor moderation, instance implosions, unassisted learning curves, lacking network effect, etc. This could be easily solved by public investment and stewardship.
Social media is public information infrastructure. A huge part of our society's epistemic crisis is that we are leaving many people's primary access to information in the hands of the very people who most benefit from them being misinformed. We can solve that for pennies a month.
