But the promise that economic growth would “lift all boats” has not been kept. While national incomes expanded, wages stagnated, work became more precarious and public services were cut. At the top, fortunes ballooned; at the bottom, families turned to food banks. Growth has become decoupled from shared prosperity. It has also become ecologically unsustainable. We are edging towards a “hothouse Earth”, where rising emissions and biodiversity loss are destabilising the conditions that support human life. Around 92% of excess global carbon emissions can be attributed to the global north, and the wealthiest 10% of individuals are responsible for nearly half of global emissions, while people in poverty are the first to face crop failures and rising food prices. Instead, let’s focus on what it is that degrowth brings that the rest of political programs have missed so far: the ideology of growth, in all its socio-cultural, economic, material and political iterations, is the curse of our time. It is the most blatant expression of capitalism in the neoliberal globalised age, rooted so deeply into the political and cultural hegemony of our societies that it goes unnoticed, and is taken for granted, even by many of the most radical struggles. Centering growth provides a sharp tool to dismantle intersecting systems of oppression by targeting the core mechanism of capital accumulation.' #degrowth https://degrowth.info/en/blog/neither-the-either-nor-the-or-for-a-sideways-degrowth npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel @nprofile…6t6n I almost totally agree... in fairness, they do say outside of work, so couriers wouldn't be a good example. But this is an apt illustration of why 'screen time' is a stupid concept. The problem isn't people reading too many classic works of literature, doing extra maths homework, or spending too long talking to their grandparents, yet flattening all screen time conflates those things with deliberately addictive digital experiences that we might well want to limit - mainly corporate social media, games, and exposure to advertising. npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel @nprofile…dn53 @nprofile…ch7a The notion that every culture can discover and use 'objectivity' as it's been employed by Western intellectual traditions fails to grasp that many cultures do not recognise the ontological dualism that is necessary to distinguish between subject/object mind/body nature/culture etc. As such, this is a deeply colonial position that wrongly positions a specific, Western way of knowing the world as a universal. It's also a position that has been and continues to be enormously damaging socially and environmentally. Please stop propagating it. npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel @nprofile…dn53 This looks alarmingly close to a Jordan Peterson Youtube video - which is largely where the whole Marxism and Postmodernism are all about absolute relativism rubbish that's in the article you linked to comes from. I'm not going to bother explaining why 'scientific socialism' doesn't fit there... Postmodernism is often misunderstood by people who either haven't read the foundational (often French) philosophical texts associated with the term and rely on Peterson or other secondary sources to summarise what it means for them. The three most influential texts were probably Jean-Francois Lyotard's 'The Postmodern Condition', Jean Baudrillard's 'Simulacra and Simulation' and Fredric Jameson's 'Postmodernism: or the cultural logic of late capitalism'. The first of those is a report of how the logic of calculative efficiency associated with computerization was likely to alter societies (this where the rejection of metanarratives comes from, but it's not anywhere near being the main focus of the book). The second is a fairly complex text about how mediation and simulation are leading away from a shared sense of reality. The third discusses how the fragmented aesthetics of then-contemporary cultural forms reflect elements of globalised capitalism. While these 40+ year old texts are dated and problematic in a variety of ways now, they're also all remarkably prescient in numerous ways. But understanding either of those things requires people to have actually read them. npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel @nprofile…dn53 'If curricula and ideas and knowledge are colonised, that means they have been shaped in part by considerations that are political, economic, social, cultural or otherwise tangential to the ideals of academic inquiry. ' WTAF is this rubbish? Politics, economics, sociology and cultural studies are all areas of academic inquiry, not things that are tangential to its ideals Given that most things that aren't covered by the above areas are affected by them - arts, science, literature, technology, history, etc - by virtue of the fact that they exist with societies that are shaped by political, economic and cultural forces, I'm left struggling to grasp what this moron is trying to say. npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel I find it oddly comforting that tech corporations are now straight up advertising their vision of dystopian individualism where all your friends have been replaced by their chatbot. #AI #dystopia https://o.mastodon.nz/media_attachments/files/114/860/496/354/479/360/original/8be4fdd0bf9500de.png npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel @nprofile…60lz Equally, given the success of the Greens as a party that's solidly to the left of Labour and which has had some success in local and (to a very limited degree) national elections, is there room for another party occupying that space? npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel Worth a read if you want a fairer assessment than Google's greenwashed environmental report... 'On July 2nd, Kairos Fellowship published a report titled “Google’s Eco-Failures,” which reveals that Google’s expansion of generative AI technologies is causing the corporation to increase its greenhouse gas emissions and total energy and water consumption. This report succeeds Google’s 2025 environment report, which the company has used since 2016 to mislead activists, lawmakers, and the public about its true environmental toll, instead painting a picture of itself as a benevolent actor amidst our worsening climate crisis.' #google #AI #ClimateChange #datacenters #Greenwash https://noclimateresultsfound.com/report/ npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel Woking through Google's 2025 Environmental Report, here's my summary... (all figures are changes from 2023-2024) Scope 2 location-based GHG emissions up from 9,252,900 - 11,283,200 tCO2e Scope 3 GHG emissions up from 10,794,000 - 12,053,000 tCO2e Total Energy Consumption up from 25,910,500 - 32,727,800 MWh Total waste generated up from 52,000 - 58,500 metric tons Water consumption up from 6,352 - 8135 million gallons. So given that they're significantly worse on every major indicator, you might be wondering how Google spins this as 'driving sustainable innovation' (p4) and a 12% reduction in datacentre emissions (p4)... The answer is that they're buying more electricity under Power Purchase Agreements - meaning that increasing amounts of renewable energy isn't used for decarbonisation, instead they're used to power the growth in AI and datacentre capacity. This, alongside the focus on efficiency metrics that obfuscate the growing energy and resource demands of Big Tech needs to be recognised as corporate greenwash that is driving climate change, not fixing it #Google #AI #DataCenters #sustainability #Tech #ClimateChange https://sustainability.google/google-2025-environmental-report/ npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel @nprofile…60lz Those numbers seem pretty dubious though? But there's never been an intention to actually cut our emissions by 50% because that would involve major infrastructural change - e.g. in the next four years we'd have to electrify all road transport and halve agricultural emissions. Which was why the NZ government lobbied hard to allow paying money to other countries under Paris. (And remember, Treasury isn't exactly a fast and loose spendthrift. They’re pretty conservative by nature.) They said the Government could comfortably borrow $80 billion, invest in long term infrastructure projects, put money in the economy and stimulate growth. But National didn’t want to. If you mean a two or multi-sided market that derives value by extracting data from all other actors, sure they're out, but this rules out nonprofits that are explicitly ruled in. If you mean a space that enables users to communicate with one another, then SMS would be in because the woefully vague wording specifies 'electronics' rather than internet-based... npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel Here's the NZ #socialmedia members bill text. The definition of social media is so broad that depending on you how interpreted the word platform it could potentially included SMS text messaging - an electronic way of enabling social interaction between two or more users. This is far removed from the Australian bill that exempts YouTube and messaging apps. Also noteworthy that it specifically targets non-profits, not just corporate platforms. #ffs https://img.scoop.co.nz/media/pdfs/2505/Social_Media_AgeRestricted_Users_Bill.pdf npub1202fmx3pchp6s2j28yfhdj8tcmkvzn2xh5ss8gefn2pg3kqj3m4qpyg3ag Sy Taffel @nprofile…6t6n @nprofile…6xvq Absolutely, and while sweeping legislation to regulate corporate social media towards not being toxic cesspools would be preferable, this isn't on the cards.
