My dad used to sing this song! I’ve never heard it anywhere except from him, and I’ve never heard anyone else mention it. When he sang it, he would throw in a little rubato/hesitation before each time the words go off in a new direction.
While he’s in the hospital, my mom and I are spending a lot of time listening with him to a playlist I made of his old favorites. I’m going to add this one to it.

I’d say yes, an improvisation is a kind of composition, so there’s no necessary difference, if your method of composing is just to write down your improvisations. But I see that as a wasted opportunity. There are very fruitful potential differences, if you fully take advantage of the possibilities offered by improvisation and by written composition, which are not the same.

I also appreciate, more and more as I get older, how much trouble I was spared because of how my parents were. Neither of them quite conforms to arbitrary gender expectations. They didn’t rebel in dramatic ways that would strike anyone as strange, but from a young age, whenever I’d hear, “men are all like this,” I’d think, my dad isn’t. And when they’d say, “women can’t do that,” I’d think, my mom can. In retrospect, this was really freeing.

I’m with Nigel on this. If any of my music meant something to someone, I’d be pleased by that. If their favorite isn’t my most recent, I don’t see why that should bother me. But if you’re worried about it, I’d recommend avoiding “best yet,” which implies a linear process of steady improvement, in favor of “best for me” or “what I like best” or something like that, which just implies a variety of options. Everything doesn’t have to be for everyone.

I really like your description of Jon’s playing; that’s exactly what I thought, and I couldn’t ask for a more sensitive or sympathetic performance. He completely got it.
It takes special skill and confidence—it’s like hypnosis or a mentalist’s trick—to carry the musical line, tension and sense of motion across 20 or 30 seconds of silence. But somehow he pulls it off.

Pedaling is also kind of a dark art. In my piano music, I only indicate pedaling where I want something very specific that isn’t what a performer would expect. Everywhere else it’s up to the player, and I write a note explaining that. Because if I specify pedal up, pedal down all through a score, they’ll do that. But if I say “use your own judgement,” they’ll do much more subtle, nuanced, musical things that I wouldn’t know how to do or how to ask for.

There you’d have to be specific then, and show the pitches that sustain. It helps if those situations look different too, so in that case I’d just write the clearest simplest rhythms everywhere else, without tying notes over or showing specific release points, so when you do show them it’s clear they have to treat these notes differently.

As a rule of thumb, I prefer to write what you want to hear, and let them figure out how to do it. So here you could just write long notes, or else whatever duration makes it easiest to read when the attacks are supposed to be, then also indicate the pedaling. Or if the rhythm is free, just noteheads with no specific duration and leave the pedaling to them. It depends how specific you need to be, and how much you want to leave to the performer.

I’m not sure I understand the question, but if I’ve got it right, it’s about a score full of short notes and lots of rest, representing music that is actually full of long notes because of the pedal? If the pedal is all the way down, it makes no difference at all how long they press the key, so there’s no point writing a 16th note followed by a dotted 8th rest and however many beats more rest…

I have a niche software question; maybe this is the place to ask.
I need to make a mock-up demo recording of the choral/orchestral piece I’m composing. I’m using Sibelius with NotePerformer. That does a pretty good job with most of the orchestral instruments, but some aren’t quite right, and there are much better VSTs available for the voices.
I have the Symphonic Choirs from EastWest, which can (with laborious effort shaping each note) even pronounce the text.

Yes to all this and especially point 3: you can make real human connections here, and then your new friends will be interested in whatever you’re doing. That takes effort though, and it doesn’t scale.
If what you want is to build a brand by broadcasting to a mass audience, that doesn’t work very well here. A lot of musicians have shown up, issued 30 press releases, and then disappeared when they got no traction.

We can trust the one in the car half the time, the one on the oven the other half, and we try to remember which is which. But mostly we use our phones for the time, and actual watches. Why does everything with a power cord want to be a clock anyway? It’s okay just to ignore them all. The rice maker thinks it’s 2am at noon? So what; it makes rice.

That by itself is strange but not so disconcerting. What’s jarring is being reminded that most people are not experiencing this with me. The pandemic for them is a closed era, way back when, and all sorts of normal things have carried on. If I had to wear a suit again it would probably be notably out of style by now. I don’t care, but it’s weird to think I can be in this limbo while trivial stuff like that, hemlines going up and down etc, continues in some parallel world.

I’ve always thought quirky was good, and not necessarily feminine. As I recall, one of my undergrad professors described my music as quirky in the recommendation letter he wrote me for grad school in composition. It was a pretty good letter and I appreciated that.

I’m at an interesting point in the composition of my choral/orchestral work in progress. The first major part (about 20 minutes) is composed, with choral and solo voice parts all done, and I’m working on the orchestration. The opening was fully orchestrated already two or three years ago, and the big climactic passage (about 16 minutes in) was done a year ago. A few months ago I worked out an earlier climactic passage and connected them. And the ending has been all set for a few weeks.

Better audio quality is better, I assume, but I don’t give it much thought. A lot of my formative teenage listening was done through the bad sound system of an old car with a loud engine and open windows (no AC), from cassettes dubbed third-hand from scratched LPs borrowed from the library. Music is what I love, not audio.

I think in saecula saeculorum is usually translated into Spanish as por los siglos de los siglos, for centuries of centuries, so that’s what I thought it meant literally. And it’s close, since the usage is obviously in a hyperbolic sense, but centuries still feel more specific than ages.
