Why was the damage from Tropical Cyclone Gezani so bad in Toamasina, Madagascar? https://accuweather.com/en/hurricane/deadly-cyclone-gezani-devastates-madagascar/1862756
While the country is no stranger to tropical cyclones this time of year, the city hadn't been directly hit with a Cat3+ since 1994. City is ~size of Pittsburgh.

Some facts about Hawaii's snow this week:
It's the 2nd event this season.
They avg ~25-30 NWS Winter advisories each year, mainly Nov.-May though earliest/latest in last 20 years is Oct. 13 & Jun. 8.
Why? Both Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa are >13,000 feet.
Incredibly, Hawaii has higher mountains than *44 of the 50 U.S. states*!

Tomorrow is Sept. 10, the peak of climatological hurricane season and we will likely have 0 named storms. Only 8 years -- 11% -- of Sept. 10ths since 1950 have not.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/hurricane/atlantic-unusually-quiet-at-hurricane-seasons-peak-but-warm-waters-to-fuel-storms-soon/1813820
I used HURDAT2 to calc 0 of TS/SS/HU points in NA on 9/10 ignoring __/ET/DB/EX/LO/SD/TD/WV, then crosschecked with IBTrACS. I confirmed 8 years and rejected 6 due when I found a storm in IBTrACS on that day.
If you go back to 1850 w/ HURDAT2, you get the 33% number that CNN had.

How rare is today's severe risk in the PacNW? IEM's SPC Day 1 Severe Risk database starts in 2002. #wawx #orwx
Since then, it's been 20 years for Olympia, 13 years for Seattle, 8 years for Portland, and for a small area a Slight Risk had not been issued before.
I have annotated the IEM map.

While yesterday's Euro forecast an alarming -25 degrees F on Jan. 10 in North Carolina, (only 9 degrees from their all-time record), this morning's run barely had any below zero temps.
Be wary of individual model runs 10-15 days out!
That said, this morning's run was still 15-25 degrees F below *normal* in many parts of the Southeast, so the signal for an unusually cold spell is there.

RE: #Helene flooding in Carolinas
The NC mountains and Charlotte have a large network of flood gauges formerly known as IFLOWS that will give us an idea of what's going on there. https://fiman.nc.gov/
USGS also has a few webcams in the area. https://www.usgs.gov/centers/sawsc/science/river-webcams-south-atlantic-water-science-center-georgia-north-and-south?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects

Meanwhile in the Eastern Pacific, multiple models are forecasting #TD10E to bring 25-75 (!!) inches of rain near/offshore of southern Mexico over the next 5 days as it slows to a crawl.
