Herb and vegetable seeds have been ordered! Decided to give tomatoes another go this year, this time rolling with a super dwarf variety called Geranium Kiss. I tend to have better luck with cherry and grape tomatoes than slicers. Also going to do potatoes for the first time, along with spring onions and garlic. We’re also going to take another stab at zucchini despite the ever-present squash vine borers and squash bugs. #gardening

Anyone know why my aloe vera plant would be off-color (some stems are dull yellow, others almost a dull pink)? For sure didn’t get over-watered, and got plenty of bright, indirect light. So thinking maybe the plant go too cold at one point? It did used to sit next to the sliding glass door to our back porch. #Houseplants #Succulents

Thankful to not have to be at the hospital any longer...but the new difficulty when "regular life" resumes is that her mom's absence becomes even more pronounced as routine takes its place again. We've had a tremendous outpouring of support from friends and family and co-workers though, so we'll get through it. Thank you to all who've offered sympathy and condolences! ❤️

One native shrub in the eastern U.S. (mostly the Mid-Atlantic and southeast states) that I don't see getting much appreciation is false indigo, or Amorphophallus fruticosa. Tolerates a wide range of soils from clay to sand, can take heat and drought well, and produces long spikes of dark purple flowers that pollinators enjoy. Also rumored to be useful as a natural insect repellant. #Plants #Flowers #NativePlants https://vnps.org/false-indigo-bush-amorpha-fruticosa/

1. Oaks (Quercus alba, Quercus phellos, Q. coccinea, among many others)
2. Willows (Salix nigra, Salix caprea)
3. Cherries and plums (Prunus americana, Prunus angustifolia, P. serotina, to name a few
4. Birches (Betula nigra, Betula papyrifera, B. populifolia)
5. Poplars/Aspens/Cottonwoods
6. Crabapples (Malus coronaria, M. ionensis, M. fusca, M. angustifolia)
7. Blueberries, cranberries
8. Maples (Acer saccharum, Acer negundo, Acer pennsylvanicum, A. rubrum)
9. Pines (Pinus strobus, Pinus taeda, P. resinosa, P. echinata, P. rigida, among others)

The number of landscapers who apparently don’t know much about the plants they’re installing in commercial landscapes continues to astound me. I passed a new Dunkin Donuts location recently built, and they planted sycamores around the small parking lot, then didn’t water, and the trees are already brown and dry-looking. This is not a tree that can handle dry periods, they prefer to be planted near water or at least receive regular rainfall.

So basically the Supreme Court just said that denial of transgender care isn’t discrimination because (in their view) transgender isn’t real. Never mind that people have been trans since the beginning of humankind and which has been well-documented for decades.

Having spent a full year on BlueSky, I don’t recommend it for anyone who wants to talk about anything other than politics. Having second thoughts about attending the Southeastern Plant Symposium in Raleigh this year, after ruminating on comments made at the last event by Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery, and Mark Weathington of J.C. Raulston Arboretum, in which they downplayed the invasiveness issues posed by non-native plants (going so far as to defend Nandina! 🤨) and calling those of us concerned about the loss of native plant habitats "zealots". I don't feel I can give my money to an event which promulgates disinformation, especially on topics of huge importance like saving our pollinators and wildlife!

I'm gonna need landscapers to come and pick up their orders asap. The loading area greenhouse is getting quite full and more orders will come in next week. Some orders have been sitting in there since October. One of the sales reps who gives me orders to pull tells me there's one particular company that calls in orders, then leaves them sit for weeks and months. We'll call them and say "Hey, are you coming to get your plants?" And they'll insist the order is still good and they'll come and get them. We should probably think about a time limit and a re-stocking fee.

Super nervous. Starting at a new position at work tomorrow, pre-pulling orders for landscapers, making sure the orders look good, relaying info to the sales team, tagging B&B trees for landscapers. All this at the retail nursery where I haven't really worked before (I was at the production farm, a little ways up the road). I'm excited though, this puts me in a better position for promotion.
Edit: the good thing is, at least I'm learning the ropes now while it's still relatively slow, rather than in March or April when we're slammed busy.

This has been one of the wilder winters I can remember...frigid in January with most of the month in the teens and low 20s, then several consecutive weeks of snow and ice, thunderstorms tomorrow with wind gusts to 60 mph, then a big snow storm Wednesday that might dump nearly a foot. Really don't want to be using all my PTO so soon in the year...

Mexico closed their airspace to U.S. planes, so the U.S. is having to take migrants down to central America and hope that those countries let them land, otherwise I think they'd just dump them off wherever they have permission to land even if it's a long ways from Mexico. Really sickening the heartlessness of this immigration policy.

Finally got around to planting various tulips and daffodils in the big pots on our back deck. I know I'm late...might not be enough time to flower this spring but some annuals will fill the gap if needed. Also found some huge 100 gallon fabric raised beds at our local garden center yesterday, for just $30 a piece. With some drip irrigation, those will do just fine for some of our vegetables this year. Trying to avoid raised bed kits with wood since the price of timber will likely skyrocket once a certain someone's tariffs go into effect 😒

I really want to do a book giveaway to get this one into peoples' hands ASAP, especially people living in suburbs and more rural areas, who have the opportunity to turn at least some of their property into a much needed oasis for threatened wildlife (especially birds and insects). "Bringing Nature Home" by Doug Tallamy has been an eye-opener about how badly we've paved and clear-cut wildlife habitat to the brink of extinction, but also how we can help bring it back. https://bookshop.org/p/books/bringing-nature-home-how-you-can-sustain-wildlife-with-native-plants-douglas-w-tallamy/7890291?ean=9780881929928

I was listening to the latest episode of The Climate Pod the other day (really good climate change podcast) and they had a guest on who was talking about how to deal with climate anxiety in a productive way, one of the ways being, rolling up one's sleeves and working to help prepare your community for whatever climate change brings your way. And it got me thinking about how we really should be investing in establishing more community gardens, buying up even small plots of land to re-wild, setting up seed banks, things like that. Because only through community do we have a chance of weathering the coming storm. We're going to need each other. What sorts of things are your communities doing to be more resilient?

Doing a little bit better emotionally this morning after not sleeping great last night; it's very weird not having Soto around, but I think I'm starting to move into the acceptance phase of grief. Maybe. Definitely going to try and get out of the house today and do something fun...hopefully see my best friend this afternoon or tomorrow. One thing's for sure, I'm going to get my money's worth from my therapy session on Tuesday, lol.

2024-11-08 22:35:43 GMT

So...things escalated rather quickly. We took Soto to the neurosurgeon today who did an MRI and found multiple problems with his spine, and said that while he believed there to be a 75% chance of him walking again, the risk of re-injury was quite high. (He's also quite an energetic little firecracker). On top of that, we didn't have pet insurance...we just signed up for pet insurance offered by the company my wife works for, but it doesn't kick in until January. So we were facing close to $14,000 in costs. So after a great deal of heart-wrenching discussion, we said farewell to our little guy. R.I.P. Soto, love you buddy.

"I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened" said Frodo.
"So do all who live to see such times," replied Gandalf. "But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." #quotes #LOTR

2024-10-28 21:42:57 GMT

Flying to Spokane on Friday then driving to Moscow, ID for my brother's wedding Sunday. I hate flying, everything about it. It's become such a hassle between practically stripping for TSA while they yell at you, then possibly lost luggage, then at least a 50% chance of a delayed or cancelled flight. All that in addition to being a nervous flyer.
Can we just have high speed rail please? Is that too much to ask?

Seeing everyone's pics of their canned/jarred produce from their gardens this year and I'm wondering to myself what I'm even doing, lol. Then again, we don't exactly have a lot of free space for doing lots of preserving. Our kitchen is the size of a large walk-in closet 😒

Question for anyone who goes fishing or hunting on a regular basis or otherwise wears muck boots. Is there something I should be spraying on mine to prolong the durability/life of the neoprene coating? I seem to run into cracking after about a year's worth of use. #Outdoors

The garden-artwork that positively reframes ‘weeds’
A misconception-busting garden has taken root in Oxford, on a spot – poignantly – where weed killers used to be developed and tested

the leaves to me look like that of either Magnolia acuminata or M. ashei (leaning towards the latter)

All the local nurseries and garden centers are flush with mums right now, and ornamental kale, but I never was able to get into mums. Too much deadheading and kind of a one-trick pony, as it were. I'd rather have asters and goldenrod and other native perennials that bloom late to give pollinators a boost of food during migration.

Agreed. And Project 2025 would all but officially demolish NOAA (along with FEMA) and hand over that role to AccuWeather (💀) and the Weather Channel who could then be in a position to charge a subscription for severe weather alerts. Which is why despite my gripes with Biden/Harris over things like Gaza and immigration, this election really is a no-brainer to stop us from completely going over a cliff.

I feel like if the government can exercise eminent domain to seize property for public infrastructure, they should be able to do likewise with something like this where lives could very well be saved by the more accurate forecasting of this particular weather model. One can argue about compensating the insurance company but it's crazy to withhold life-saving information like this.

"The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) cannot reveal weather forecasts from a particularly accurate hurricane prediction model to the public that pays for the American government agency – because of a deal with a private insurance risk firm." https://www.theregister.com/2024/10/01/government_hurricane_forecast_secrecy/
