Let me play devil's advocate here. The number is important not because it says how much fiat you or I can get per BTC, but because it's a proxy for how much total value is stored in the network. While most things are measured in an unfortunately unsound money, we need to use it as a reference. Just until moon 🌛

Good point. They differ in that PoS formalizes the relationship between influence and concentration, whereas with Bitcoin it's a natural consequence of miners being incentivized to follow economic activity. Doesn't that difference matter?

No consensus changed. There was no accepted UASF, URSF, or MASF.
Your insistence that a MASF killed their #BIP110 is like me and two other anarchists signing a petition we wrote to transfer ownership of the Fed to me, and complaining when I pitch up at my new reserve bank and get thrown out.
Consensus was made on the network, by the majority ignoring it.

2026-08-17 13:18:35 GMT

In this passionate farewell video @nprofile…fkft claims that #BIP110 is captured because there was no accepted URSF, equating the ~80% of nodes that didn't signal for nor against BIP110 as abstentions from a referendum. I'm one of those "abstentions".
A referendum with too many abstentions is the community telling you that the motion doesn't have legitimacy. That's what happened with BIP110. A minority called a referendum, and most of us simply didn't want to legitimize it one way (running #Knots) or another (URSF). Without legitimacy there was nothing to reject.
Consequently the miners didn't have any reason to start signalling either, so they didn't. There is no reason to believe that it was some cabal of suitcoiners that conspired to kill BIP110. It was dead on arrival.
This is how you handle minority motions without support in a decentralized system. It would be terribly inefficient to respond fully to each and every suggestion, to the point of becoming a saturation attack vector.
BIP110 failed because the movement was illegitimate.
It's incredibly unfortunate that it was pushed as much and irresponsibly as it was, because I agree with so much of what they were fighting for. Unfortunately it was done in a completely unacceptable way. Now we're left with a much smaller group to fight the long fight against arbitrary data and shitcoinery on #Bitcoin, having lost some of its most fervent defenders. That's a huge pity.
I can't blame Mechanic and co for being disillusioned with Bitcoin after having fought so hard only to be mostly ignored. It still sucks to lose them.
While I don't believe Bitcoin to be captured to the degree that Mechanic claims in this video, he does raise some worrying concerns. I sincerely hope he's wrong, but we must remain ever vigilant 🛡️

In a free market you can't enforce such a measure. The solution by tech companies is simple: just redefine "private" to be "trust me, bro" privacy.
Besides, most of the tech itself never was private to begin with. So the more reasonable thing is to update users' baseline expectations: UNLESS YOU HAVE STRONG CONFIRMATION, IT'S NOT PRIVATE.

What has thay gotten us? Ever increasing centralization of capital, megacorps lobbying/bribing government, corruption, patronage, market inefficiencies.
It is the role of consumers, not businesses, to value commercial activity in more than just money.

I'm not sure about that. When all the SSPs are run by one entity, how self-custodial is it really? Sure, you can unilaterally exit, but that's only a small benefit.
Privacy-wise it's much worse than LN, because it operates with similar properties as the main chain. You're going from trusting one LN custodian to trusting another LN custodian LightSpark) on a much more transparent/trackable chain.
I really want to like Spark (and Ark), but it doesn't seem like its glaring and serious issues are addressed yet. Until such time I advise everyone to stay away from it.
It rather seems like everyone is pushing Spark because it's easy, and legally qualifies as "self-custodial", so gets around Google's recent KYC requirement.

No, @nprofile…fhc5 is correct. Users need to be aware of the implications of the changes.
People come to Bitcoin and Nostr to reclaim their freedom, so the default should be reasonable privacy. Spark doesn't help with that. "Self custody" is doing a lot of lifting in Spark, and comes at a high cost.
