Regarding the walled gardens vs privacy and standardisation, isn't the solid project exactly what you describing?
That protocol in theory should help you do exactly that: build whatever apps on top of data. I had several attempts with it but its vastness is straight up disarming

Honestly, chances of a new OS to chatch on are pretty slim. I think something like a soft-layer/psudo os using the infrastructure we already have, might close to reality.
I too am into wasm, but the wasm ecosystem it's still young and not yet well standardized.
There is pointnetwork, same as urbit, they went to rewrite the internet :) and they keep adding things.
Changing such core things like the os is pretty hard, my feeling is by adding an os (pseudo) on top of any current os might be simpler and feasible.

I love this project and I hope will succeed. I am thinking to bring yggdrasil in the mix. That network works pretty great and the fact you can generate your own IPv6 from ed25519 keys is awesome. With these two you can setup a network however you want. Ygg is giving the metwork, pubky the dns and resolve. At this point you don't even need k8s, goes with out saying cloud monopol can finally be teard down.
There are tones of applications, you can do anything. From end user apps to low level such as db, file storage. All is possible now :)

If you leave 100usd on a table and not do anything with it and return in...say 5 years what would you find? The same 100usd, with today economy, probably even less stronger than they were 5years ago.
You might want to say the same about other classic assets but is not the same.
Probably more than 50-60% percent of the globe not even heard of btc, 15% heard of but don't know what is it. Who has it stack it... what is the point of having it?

While a piece of art, or a house or gold and cash for that mather (safe heaven assets), have a teoretical value, but that value can become tangible when you sell that thing. Same goes with btc. You look at your wallet, probably dispay is showing usd 😉 because 3.543375btc means nothing but 80000usd do and you are proud. Guess what that is a theoretical owned value. Unlike your bank account these money are not actually in your posession.
To lift btc of the ground we need to start moving them around, gain some network effect, it been 16 damn years. C'mon.

Yep. I totally agree with you. The whole thing is designed that way.
All the tips are oriented towards the social scope.
While I appreciate the enthusiasm, the architecture is also faulty. There's nothing decentralized here. I know there are some quality relays out there, but just like back in the day when you had to search that forum, you need to know where they are.
To be frank, I don't see many reasons to have global platforms, but I might be narrow-minded, I don't know.
I don't know what to believe about everything being public, undeletable, and uneditable. I remember how ultra annoying it was on Facebook in the early days when you couldn't edit a comment.
I am not saying not have but you kind of need to trust the relay owner. What if damus pulls the plug? Just like that?
Nostr is a nice concept to prove a point and this is how it started in the first place. But instead of grinding on it a bit, ppl went all in into creating clients and now we have 100 twitter like clients doing more or less the same thing.
There are some apps out here but... I know there is someone who created a multiplayer chess, a spotify like app, a wiki app, but all of this revolve around the same concept. Publishing something. An eccomerce platform for example is more complex.
Time will tell, but ...

No offence but btc/sats circulation is not encouraged in any way. Everywhere, everyone is advising to stack the damn thing. Look around at how much effort is put into that direction of stacking and if possible through a magic way to make some profit too. If you don't circulate how the heck do you expect to get this thing moving?
Zaps might be a good attempt to move into the consumming direction but is very shy.
On top of that is the constant comparison to fiat. We love to talk shit about fiat bow how extatic we were when 1btc was 65k usd or whatever.
Accounting and taxation are not so easy and differ from country to country. If you want one universal coin like btc you need to change laws and perceptions.
Think of the burger price, right? (This is an example, not the real price)
1usd in usa
20 y in japan
To different fiat, from two diferent countries with two meaning for value.
But check this out.
0.9 eur in say, France
1.1 eur in say, Spain.
Eur currency is the best way to look at btc.
One currency with different value across the countries using it.
This would be a good starting model. My 2 cents.

Honestly, I don't believe BTC will go much further. It's already unbearably complex and complicated, and these sidechains will add even more complexity. I think this is one of the main reasons why adoption is so low after 15 years. I talk to a lot with regular people, and they still can't wrap their heads around it. BTC and all cryptocurrencies in general have good ideas, but most of them, including BTC, were built around profit. Sorry if I'm bursting your bubble, but I don't think this will go much further, at least not in this format.

I mean all of these in one way or another. You are absolutly right in terms of revenue stream. I have a friend which is hairdresser and he is the best case for pay per use from business pov. This month you have 500customers, next you might have 20. What do you do?
But, I will pay one time 20c to have access to a news article for 24h, or for a movie, the same, say $1 or $2.
Or for a nostr service for example to generate me 100 PDFs, or a storage service to store me for a fixed amount of time some files, than to remove them no question asked.
I am not saying to remove subscription. But allow the user to pay par use too.
On digital you have time x resource = price/second (let's say)
You want sorage? <time> x (storage price + service [backup, employees, etc])
You want, say, compute power for whatever? Same time x (cpu freq + other)
You want a temporay chat?
All of these can be covered with pay per use first. I need more? Yeah, sure, make a sats deposit to the servuce and they will let you know when your credit is done.

- I use google as it's the most simple, reliable and complete 19.99month
Total: $239/year
Entertainment
- youtube video - $17.99/month
- netflix - $12.99/month
- prime - $4.99/month
And thang God for streamio with real-debrid plugin
Total: $431/year
Food
- glovo prime - $6.99/month - because they are assholes and add taxes to transportation, service (whatever the fuck that mean). Same goes to those dickheads from uber, airbnb, takeaway etc.
Total: $83.88/year
This does not include other profesional subscriptions I have:
InteliJ, todoist, etc let say an extra $300/year
So we are looking at around $1800, $1900 /year
I admit i don't pay for all the papers at the time. Mostl'y using free tier or pay for the one suits me well that month. But the rest. I kind need them because most of them they are forcing me to do so or i need them
This is not easy sum for most. And you don't get you money's worth. There are months when I don't open netflix or prime for example and not canceling subscription.
We need to bring back the pay per use.
