At least the HSR problems between france, spain and italy are caused by hubris and pride, not by boredom and neglect like in the UK

I see people talking about trains and that makes me happy. We should definitely talk about about ways they fail and ways they could be made better.
But in my experience, the biggest blocker is the fact that the people at the top, even when it benefits them, are not interested in improving railway services.
Get Glasgow moving is not interested in improving railway services.
SPT is not interested in improving railway services
Scotrails is not interested in improving railway services.
Network rail is not interested in improving railway services.
it wouldn't surprise me that great western railway & others are equally desiniterested in improving railway services.
Honestly the only one i've observed in the UK make good choices that are consistent with improving railways services is TFL.
I honestly don't know what to do about this because whenever I myself confronted those people about their lethargic response to urgent problems they only answer with disdain, wielding their ignorance like a rotten shield.

@nprofile…4x5t isn't that already the case? How does that mean that math is on the chopping block? Chopped from what?

@nprofile…4x5t I watched the games live when Alpha Go was playing against Lee Sedol, I watched when AlphaStar was playing LiquidTLO. Neither of those achievements have changed anything in my relationship with the game of Go or Starcraft, why would it? I play for my own enjoyment, and I would bet most people who play those games are equally disinterested in the achievements of AI in those domains. Why would math be any different?

@nprofile…4x5t mathematics is a social process, one driven by what humans find interesting to share with other humans. Mathematicians who aren't able to participate in this circle are "crackpots" until enough members of the community can understand and translate their knowledge into digestible bits.
In what sense is math "on the chopping block"? The example given, chess, does not demonstrate that AI superiority equates the chopping block

So, given that Apple has kept cooperating with totalitarian regimes, I'm going to try moving away from their online services.
I can replace iCloud backups with manual backups on a nas + tailscale which is the most important feature I use on a regular basis.
Any suggestions to migrate from apple photos to a self-hosted solution? Any recommendations for a music player (for either Android or iOS) that you can point to a library on a nas?

"Modern programming" actually refers to programming from the 1800 to late 1900s. For programming that relates to today's world please use "Contemporary programming" or "post-modern programming"

Neoliberalism has been successful in replacing our notion of "efficiency" from "maximizing the output/resource ratio" to "minimizing resources".
Like we see in America today, "improving efficiency" is about making resource cuts, not about improving the output/resource ratio

it's got a very characteristic artsy/indie ambiance which feels a bit fake given it's a big international corporation, but that's miles better than “the wallpaper is frailing off and the shower smells like mould" of the travelodge and premier inn around the corner

I can’t imagine the job of composing for a JRPG:
you pour your sweat and tears into a masterpiece about killing god
You find out there are 10 more god-killing tracks to make
After gruelling work trying to come up with equality intense track you learn there is one more about killing the god that rules the gods
The scriptwriter wants the leitmotif of each lesser god to appear in the final piece in the order they were killed.
The Gameplay director wants to sync up player actions to the track each time a powerup is used
The real gods are the composers

@nprofile…e5g0 My impression is that the economical system, while not great, isn't wholly responsible for the events unfolding right now. In particular, today's america and the USSR share one commonality: the single party system. America's 2-party system seems to have slowly but surely degenerated into a single-party system with some opposition. I wrote a bit here

@nprofile…xyvy @nprofile…6kk0 @nprofile…3cjl Your frame of reference is not the same as mine. You're talking about why individuals cannot switch and the political forces pushed on them. When I make those statements, I think of the political forces and the social structures that create a world where civilized (as opposed to entirely virgin) areas have to use gas.
Assuming cooking with gas is half as efficient as electric of induction (pretty sure that’s not too far from the truth), and let's say a population is using 1MW of power only for cooking with gas (converted from BTU etc), flatly replacing all those appliances by electric ones and keeping the gas for electricity generation would yield you another 1MW of power to use for anything else.
If you could half the cost of energy usage for cooking country-wide, as a politician, wouldn't you do it?
Clearly the people of your country have decided to make such efficiencies illegal, the question now is "why”, "how did we let this happen” and "how can we prevent this in the future”

@nprofile…6kk0 Just like we should undeploy cars at a national scale! I agree we should do cars (and industry) first, but I can't see the argument for letting gas go on much longer. Again, I suspect that it's a cultural issue. Clearly removing gas from my culture is a no-op, and I'm guessing it's more complicated for the population you have in mind

2025-02-18 12:14:57 GMT

@nprofile…6kk0 I see what you're saying but in my mind, cooking with gas is a technological downgrade, unlike books, which are a technological upgrade. I think that's the cultural mismatch. None of my traditional dishes ever needed gas, only fondue, and we would use a small alcohol based appliance for it
We shouldn't downgrade our technology for the few, we should upgrade it for the most. Which is what libraries do, and what induction does.

2025-02-18 12:11:37 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…6kk0 Oh that's not my point of view at all! It's merely a counter argument to "everything gas". Gas only makes sense in a limited range, a range that it not reached by many, let alone the vast majority of the population, specially in the UK. I don't think this is a matter of education or competence either.
I've grown up where people are generally competent and educated and all our food has always been cooked on electric, whether resistive, or induction, including our traditional dishes.
Other dishes that required gas made use of special tools fit for purpose (pizza, fondue, stir-frys), and despite all our applicances being electric we would use gas where necessary. Having experienced this lifestyle, I cannot imagine that the trade-off (non-renewable, safety, expensive infrastructure) of deploying gas at a national scale is worth the benefit of the few who need gas on a daily basis.
In that sense, I could say that a society catering to the 1% at the cost of everyone else is just as hellish

2025-02-18 11:50:49 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…6kk0 I think you grossly overestimate the proportion of people in the population:
who cook
who can even cook competently
who are even interested in cooking
This is without questioning what "traditional" cooking even is. I suspect that's merely a cultural mismatch

@nprofile…6kk0 @nprofile…xyvy @nprofile…3cjl to be fair, lots of major cities in Europe (Paris, Tallin, Utrecht, all of Switzerland) are miles ahead on this.
Gas stoves are also just a worse technology to deploy for most people. And you could always get it back by buying a container, like people in those places do for barbecue, woks, and pizza ovens

So the lastest Idris2 feature I'm working on helps with customizing binders syntax. And I've been hacking it using function-space. But I just learned about fun-split and now I really want to update my approach to do it properly with a meta-level operation that explicitly manipulates the context. Ideally it would mean that the syntax for pi-types (x : a) -> b x would be implementable as a library definition.
Any idea where to start and read about fun split and it's implementation as a part of typechecking?

Pipelines are uni-directional so you'd lose the backward part
The types involved in neural network layers are not very informative so I think you'll end up with a pipeline [Matrix, Matrix, Matrix …]
You could implement a pipeline of bidirectional transformations in the category of lenses, but abstracting over categories is the topic of the next blog post :)

I think the coolest part about this work is that we’re using it right now for internal infrastructure and it's very nice to use.
