It has actually happened to me three times in my life.
After the first one, I thought I was careful enough to avoid a repeat, but somehow I always managed to miss the clues.

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A rare morning that started with waking from a nightmare. The hangover continues, even half an hour after waking.
It's not a new one. After work, I discover my car has been towed. I don't know who towed it or where it went. A parking violation in the employee parking lot but the business is now closed so I have nobody to ask about what I'd done or where the car went.
0/10. Do not recommend.
I hope your morning gets off to a better start that that #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A broken night's sleep has me up too soon and groggy. It would figure that the day I don't have a 2 mile walk scheduled is the day I wake up long before the sun.
So it goes.
I still have things to do. Status checks on various works in progress. A trip to the market later. Wood and water tasks.
With 100F+ in the forecast, it's a good day to hunker down and wait it out.
I hope your day starts well and finishes better than you expected #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
The sun got up before I did. It's going to make my morning walk less pleasant, but my body must have needed the extra minutes of sleep.
I have a few minutes before I have to start the business of the day. My coffee is fresh, not too hot to drink. Mostly wood and water tasks on the list.
A good time to be grateful that, in the midst of the chaos, I can still find quiet, if only for a few moments.
I hope you find a few moments of quiet #today

I designed, built, and taught online courses for universities for years.
The amount of interaction really depends on the course design and the platform it's delivered on.
Most platforms lean toward learner management under the guise of learning management.
What most don't realize is that all learning is internal and all teaching is at a distance. Even if the distance is only from the white board to the first row.
It's how that gap get bridged that matters.

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I lost the race with sunrise. Still have Things to Do before I can take my 2 mile walk. I can postpone some of them until after but others can't be helped.
Not like the heat will be dangerous if I leave a half hour later. Just uncomfortable.
I'm too old and set in my ways to court discomfort. Some things are worth working for.
I hope this is one of them.
May your discomforts all be small and short lived #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Workman coming to repair some loose pieces of siding this afternoon. Not a big job. Just one beyond my capabilities.
Many of the finicky bits of life are that way these days. I rely on younger, stronger, more knowledgeable people.
Really, I've just had to own getting old. I don't have the strength or flexibility I need.
But, contrary to dire predictions in my youth, I survived to get here. I'll take the win.
I hope, at a minimum, you survive #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
The night didn't cool much. Barely sunrise and it's already approaching "too hot" for an outdoors walk.
A scattered morning.
Perhaps not yet quite awake. Operating in zombie mode, looking for my brain. Yawning in the face of a new morning.
Yet a start, however sluggish, is still a start. Getting bogged down doesn't mean stopped. Distraction, merely a side trip.
May your start be smooth and effective #today

Not much on the agenda but I'm eager to get going this morning.
Some mornings are like that. Roaring out of the gate, ready to take on the day.
I've breakfast waiting and a walk outside before the day heats up too much.
My stalled manuscript took on some new life yesterday. I'm hoping that it continues. It doesn't take much to ignite a story, but that spark has been missing for way too long.

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A Saturday with no plans. Just a nice summer's day. How decadent.
I baked bread yesterday. Have no need to leave the house. Settled some old business last week. Don't really feel the need to start anything new right now.
Yeah, I have a book that's stewing. At some point it will boil over into actual word counts.
Just not today.
I'll chop my wood, carry my water, and let the day unfold as it will.

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
The morning read spoke to cycles not conforming to norm yet maintaining their identity as cycles.
An icy rain at midsummer. A balmy, shirtsleeves day in winter.
They happen but the larger seasonal cycles continue.
Inner cycles happen the same way. I try to be patient with myself when I have an off day.
Or a week that falls flat.
These things happen then the cycle picks up again.
May you find patience for yourself when you need it #today

2026-05-19 11:41:43 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
My last bread baking failed. The starter wasn't ready and the loaf just sat there, wet and glistening for 24 hours.
I baked it anyway, just to complete the cycle but I knew what I'd get out of the oven.
A brick.
Disappointing but only a small setback. I know how to fix it.
These things happen. No matter how successful the past efforts, the next one can fall flat.
I'll just try again.
I hope you find the wherewithal to try again if you need to #today

Oh, coffee, my coffee. You betrayed me in the night, but stand redeemed in morning's wat'ry light.
I made the mistake of brewing myself a single cup at dinner last night. Strong. Rich. Delicious.
That one cup lasted until I realized - at bed time - I still nursed it.
Caffeine at bedtime, slow dosed and dripped over hours.
A poor night ended with the aroma of the morning drip.
Resurrected.
May you find the right cup for your day #today

2026-05-10 13:41:56 GMT

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
The day's reading speaks to the conflict between ideal and actual. Desire and reality.
The old chestnut about 10 years to become an overnight success plays into it.
That the struggle matters more than the goal. Without it, you never reach the goal.
That nobody achieves mastery in a day.
Something worth doing, that you believe in, is worth struggling for.
And, if once achieved, continuing to struggle.
May your strength be up to the struggle #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
This sleeping in until the sunrise is getting old.
It seems weird to be peeved by getting another good night's sleep. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed those early, quiet hours. Spending time in hermit mode. Listening to music. Reading willy-nilly. Following rabbits down holes.
Listening to myself think for a few, decadent hours before the day's demands wrestled their way in.
May you have a few, decadent hours and can hear yourself think #today

The morning reading talks of working with day's seams and lines rather than against them.
An odd idea at first but knowing how I react to the day as it unfolds makes a difference in my response to it.
Like the early morning quiet, before others are around: A good time to sit, to think, to write.
You get the idea. Your day will be different but every day has seams I can take advantage of.
May you find the seams in your day #today

Sigh.
Easy to blame the technology instead of the implementation.
When the people forced to use a tool don't have the skills and knowledge to use it effectively, the only answer is blame the tool - and not the people who forced them to use it without teaching them how.

I lit the oven while the bread warms up from its night in the fridge. It's way too early to be awake but I need to play the cards I have.

It's okay. I can recover.
No, I won't get those 2 hours back, but I can pick up where I left off and continue with the day as if I just woke up late.

I put it down to being distracted, stressed by Everything Happening. To not being sufficiently in the moment to track properly.

But a breath takes a moment. Or maybe two. To stop. Wrest my focus inward before putting hands to tiller again.

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Yesterday's task pile dealt with. Much less on my plate this morning. Mostly it's about getting the year up to a sustainable speed.
I'm working on trying to get a comfortable, sustainable pace on my days that allow me to get my writing done without pulling out what little hair I have left.
Sunrise in about 90 minutes. A walk in the cold after breakfast. Perhaps some baking this afternoon.
I hope the pace in your day isn't too frenetic #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
My tasks have piled up on me. Again.
I do this periodically. Let things slide until I'm facing an avalanche of Things That Must Be Done.
The Pile of Doom.
Truth is, it works for me. I've got a full morning lined up and, if I'm careful and manage to stay aware of the clock ticking away the day, there's plenty of time for all of it.
A day of shifting gears and requiring attention.
My your attention be as focused as you need #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
At some point, I may retire. It took me half a century to get here. I don't see much sense in hanging it up now that I've finally gotten to the place where I can do what I've always wanted to do.
Maybe that's the definition of retirement.
My blue collar background always defined it as not going to work everyday. It meant retreating from the world.
As if work was the only meaning.
Perhaps it is.
May you find meaning in your life #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
A quiet morning before the day's noise begins.
A settling day as the slow reconstruction continues after weeks of disruption. It will take more than a day to accomplish but "now" is all the time I have.
Part of the day will be chopping wood, carrying water, but part will be play and reading. Cooking later. It might be a stew day.
Anything is possible even if most things remain improbable.
May you find the possible in your day #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
The stress and short nights over the holidays caught up with me. I nearly slept until sunrise. This time of year, that's "sleeping in."
A chop wood, carry water day ahead. I need to get my daily schedule re-established after a month long hiatus in December.
Day 3 and I'm already having to play catch up. I'm out of Practice.
But I've got time this morning, even if I am starting late.
I hope you can take the time you need #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Few tasks requiring my attention beyond the normal Friday. The house still needs to be put back together. Mostly just rehanging drapes and some minor furniture adjustments.
I'll put my new calendar up and start building the new year's picture, one frame at a time.
It's still too soon to start a new project of any flavor. Figuring out what parts of last year I want to keep will be enough for now.
May your Practice be fruitful #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.
I got swept up in a tidal wave of pressing tasks that had no business interrupting my morning quiet time.
That's what I get for looked at my inbox before my inner self in the morning.
Not an auspicious start for an auspicious day but perhaps a good one.
I'm keeping Practice as my word of the year. It did yeoman's work last year, but I still have things I need to Practice.
May your year get off on the right foot #today
